"Pitchfork top 100 albums of the half decade"

http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/9465-the-top-100-albums-of-2010-2014/1/

Their 'end of' lists are always a good read since they can't rely on their default snark mode and have to actually justify their choices. The gems are the albums that made it (woah @ Big Boi's Chico Dusty making the cut.

Top 10 below: seems the #1 has fared kinder elsewhere then here.

10: Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel
9: Sun Kill Moon - Benji
8: YEEZUS
7: Tame Impala - Lonerism
6: Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City
5: Beach House - Teen Dream
4: Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
3: Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest
2: Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid,
1: Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

People love rushing to make these lists.

They really shouldn't make it until at least 5 years has past like the hall of fame.

Top 10 looks like a bunch of "hey look I'm cool for picking these albums" choices.

Although thankfully most of the records they've been nuthuggin they left lower on the list (although, will FKA Twigs have made the cut if they mad this a year ago, probably not. And I am a fan)

I know it's a mixtape and won't count as an official release.

But I was a little disappointed in "Channel Orange" compared to "Nostalgia Ultra."

imo there are some more palatable "songs" and singles on Nostalgia but CO is more cohesive..

Makes sense.. songs like Novacane are produced by Tricky Stewart, Songs 4 Women was Happy Perez and Swim Good was Midi Mafia..

These dudes make singles.. radio records what have you... so to me they were stronger songs for mass consumption..

In response to Reply # 0

pitchfork is a hipster/ alt rock magazine.
that means they either like stuff that is super minstrelsy
or super "artistic."

kanye is able to hit both of those marks.
plus he's an auteur... which rock publications dig.

and not only that, MBDTF is a great album.
yeezus is either great or terrible or mediocre or intentionally bad...
but the fact that nobody can really decide makes it qualify as art, i guess.

do ppl dislike the pick because kanye didn't
do it all by himself in the studio? that's pretty rockist.

do ppl dislike the pick because kanye can't rap?
that's a fair point... but he's not being praised for being
a god teir emcee.

he's being praised for making great albums.
which he has done at least once or maybe twice in the past 5 years.

He may not be the best rapper/lyricist but the cat is constantly pushing forward..

if not THEE influential.

While we may argue the quality (lol) it was the first time in awhile you had such a street record released by a major label completely uncompromised; there were no Jeremih duets on that record.

Signaled the rise of Luger and his subsequent clones (Mike Will, etc)

Finally it, along with Ross's BMF, officially killed the classic concept of the regional NY street record...for better or for worse without it there would be no Shmurda "Hot Nigga"

jahlil beatz (from philly (chester)) made that beat
i'm listening to it right now. this is kind of a classic east coast beat to me
take out the bullhorn and i could see havoc making something similar in the late 90s

yeah the snares are at regular speed and the bass is more boom bap then ominous simple 3 note melodies. But the snares are pushed very high in the mix and the bass + simple orchestral synth line=the glue of the entire song and very much from the modern school of rap production.

Its what happens when Lex Luger trap gets farmed out to Chicago drill (which made it even more sinister and stripped down in line with the nihilistic subject matter) farmed right back to NYC.

I loved Lonerism, Teen Dream, Channel Orange and GKMC myself but we have more than 5 years left before we start analyzing the 2010's. This list was definitely rushed.

The Kanye West dick riding is expected at this point.

When the dust settles on this whole Pitchforkian/indie phase of rock music history will treat them very kind.

The best 'young' American rock band out there.

Any other aging (late 30s) heads in here like "What?? I only own like three of these 100 (!) albums!"

"Expectations" is still my favorite Tame Imapala joint.

I love "I Am a God" and the scale/imagery of the Yeezus tour but that album...is not that great. MBDTF is definitely top 3 of the decade so far.

10.0 for that seemed excessive at the time. So much hype coming into the album but in hindsight I think it's my least favorite Ye album

I do miss Good Fridays tho

The top of this list isn't surprising given what they've rated highly over the past few years but a lot of it seems overrated

There have been very few "classic" albums but tons of good-great albums

I need to have a sit and listen to that Joanna Newsom joint tho
