Blowout Comb really changed my life when I was 13, and it was a huge honor to interview Ishmael Butler about Digable, Shabazz Palaces and why he quit music when the former broke up. Among many other things.

i love your show, man...it's always neat when I catch it on air here in the D.C. area and i go "I KINDA know this guy" to my folks.
Blowout Comb is such an important record. So important, I'm writing a long-form piece about for this year and I'm going to pitch to all the big papers and sites. That record really changed me as a man.
And Shabazz Palaces has done something for me as well.
Thanks for this.

"Blowout Comb" was a masterpiece even better than Digable Planet's first album. I just hope that Butterfly, Mecca, and Doodlebug realize that Blowout Comb is one of the best hip hop albums ever and the lack of commercial success of the album does not mean it was not superior.
There are so many questions that I have. I wanted to know how Butterfly felt about that album and also how did he discover Mecca and Doodlebug. The Roots have definitely been influenced by Digable Planets and I feel that they could have reached even more mainstream success like The Roots and Outkast if they had stayed together. I wonder if Digable Planets came out today, would they have stayed together. Digable's records still sound better than most hip hop albums today with complex lyrics and rich lush production.
it seems like Mecca was ambivalent about being in the group by the end, and she was apparently the hold-up even when they sorta reunited. C'est la vie.

Loved the point/question you brought up about the vocals being one with the instrumentals and not standing out a ton. So cool to hear his thoughts/reaction on that.

Between '96 and 2010, how was he eating? I'm real curious about that. NYU film school doesn't pay the bills. It IS a bill. Especially having a son & the mother,... thats serious. I doubt CherryWine made any real bread. Was he ashamed to reveal/ did he seem guarded?
