Really great import record with an amazing graffiti cover.

A friend borrowed it and destroyed the record AND the sleeve. I was so pissed.

Years later, I found it in Holland at a garage sale for like $3.

Still have it.

The Low End Theory on cassette. That started off my collection. I was 12. I would use my allowance to buy tapes. I would cut grass in the summer and rake leaves in the fall for extra money. I could only buy one per month because my folks wouldn't let me spend all my money on tapes. I tricked my grandmother into buying The Death Certificate next. It was my money so she had no problem buying it. She didn't know what it was of course. Love ya, grandma (RIP) Thanks!

I was 9 years old at the time. I somehow convinced my Mom to buy me that tape. I don't think she really knew about rap music or "Parental Advisory," plus I think she was busy doing her own thing at the store we were @ so she didn't pay much attention to the tape I decided to get, since previous to this I was always just getting alt rock tapes and shit like that.

So I got my Onyx tape on the strength of "Slam!" and proceeded to listen to it endlessly for a couple weeks.

Then, I was at our family's lake house with all my Uncles/Aunts/Cousins and shit. Had my tape walkman with me, with the Onyx tape in it, and the cover to the Onyx tape under it. I went swimming so I left the music stuff on the bartop in front of the lake. My mom picked up the tape cover to check out what I was/the kids were listening to these days, started reading the song titles/liner notes. Remember I was 9 years old. She sees the song titled "Black Vagina Finda" and her jaw hits the fucking floor. She hands it over to my Uncle who cracks up laughing. The whole bar area passed this tape cover around and each human was either appalled and/or hysterical depending on the individual's sense of humor.

I didn't see that tape for the next 4 years. Couldn't get The Chronic or Doggystyle, etc, without sneakily dubbing them from my older neighbors and titling the tapes "Pearl Jam" and shit like that til I was a teenager.

not the same kinda obviously explicit tape but my family always thought me listening to rap while we did uber-white family shit was funny (in a passive agressive judgmental way of course)

to be insulting at all. I laughed about it. I just meant that I was reading all responses in sarcasm voice just based on your comment haha. I think my use of "jaded" was the wrong terminology.

And haha - yea. Sounds like we have similar families. My brother was listening to like Iron Maiden meanwhile I'm in the other room bumping DJ Quik. My parents couldn't figure it out but I actually got my Pops into some of my music some years later.

He asked my pops to buy the tape for him and he did. I came over one weekend to find the tape in my father's bedroom. He walked in on my brother listening to it once and must have heard "she was sucking the next niggas...". Pops told me he didn't know the were cursing on the tape and that I could listen to it but not my brother. I was a teenager at the time, and my brother had to be around 10 at the time.

i just mentally checked my crates and the Fat Boys LP preceded it, but i might have bought that years later when i started collecting.

the first CD i bought with my own dough was De La Soul is Dead (it had bonus tracks).

i'm not sure what my first cassette was. might have been Straight Out the Jungle by The Jungle Brothers.

I owned the album "Future Shock" on cassette when it first came out but back then even though a lot of rock, pop, & dance tunes where played along electro rap stuff like "Planet Rock", "Rapper's Delight", "It's Like That", & etc. the majority of stuff like "Rockit", "Tour De France", & "Good Times" was nothing but non-rap tunes.
