Actually, I guess Eazy-E's exposure of Dre's WCWC days counts as a precedent, but anybody who had been listen to LA rap for more than 5 years had to have known that shit by then.
EDIT: It still had impact, though... because I mean, I even remember being somewhat shocked by it despite "Surgery" being one of the top songs when I was in high school. Somehow, folks never really made the connection.
