"The definitive list of white rap songs recorded by black artists"

These are songs that either blew up with minimal love from balck audiences or songs that have become white party anthems while falling out of favor in hip-hop circles.

so our experience may not be in line w/the experience of mainstream ___ ppl.

i guess that's cutting both ways here.

i remember the song being embraced by Blacks at first but i was in high school and i heard the song at parties. i can't remember hearing it on Black radio in STL back then.

since its initial popularity i have definitely encountered it most often in the company of white ppl.

fuck you.

Baby Got Back was an MTV song though.... the video broke it more than the radio grind... Once that happened its easier to be #1 on pop charts then try and break urban..

Doesn't mean black ppl didnt fuck with it... It just scaled differently

it seemed like it was underground from the Box briefly, then blew up on MTV shortly thereafter. pretty sure i recall seeing it on BET...i seem to remember Donnie Simpson playing it. LOL, i could be wrong though.

'Baby' was perfectly tailored for radio. if it wasn't played @ Black radio it could be b/c Blacks didn't embrace it.

I was still spinning around Tha D when "Mack Daddy" dropped. I thought "Testarossa" was gonna be the breakout single on there, not "Baby Got Back" (and DEFINITELY not the lead "One Time's Got No Case")

That said, when Baby Got Back was released as a single, I got requests left and right for it.

I miss Tha D... But I'll never move back there.

in the moment, and we're somewhat embarrassed by it now. Even the name was corny as shit. That Jackson 5 sample was a little TOO on the nose. The Hey/Ho chorus was too calculated. Those are legitimately great pop songs, though.

Yes, O.P.P. and Hip-Hop Horray were corny. Extremely so. But the rest of their catalog is solid. And even if you don't like Treach's style (as many do not), it's not intrinsically "crossover".

YES..

If you were to say,, DJ a white wedding 30+ .. early 90s rap crossover classics are still the life of the party...

Crazy to think all that stuff is Jock Jams status now..

and yea. NBN had an ill songwriting game imo. They cracked a code to make these rap crossover anthems that were still rap hooks.

When that song first aired on radio & video I saw soooo many white people buying that album & single more than black people did, most blacks wanted to hear the "Speakerboxx" than the "Love Below" disc.
