"Madlib Beat Konducta Series Post"

i've really been heavy into madlib lately and have grown to appreciate his art for sample based hip hop instrumentals. i really have to have an in depth discussion post about the beat/rock konducta series, where i will post each album and we can talk about it in depth.

It's highs are as high as Donuts, but Donuts wins as far as quality across the board. That and Donuts has the whole "dying man" thing that just makes it more valuable, whether that's fair to Madlib or not.

I'd rather hear that album than Donuts and have played it a lot more, but it's not head and shoulders above it
the production is more varied and just as nuanced, but Donuts has a stronger musical narrative

And I think he refined his concepts better with every passing volume. This one just didn't have any focus because he didn't really set one here, and I value that a lot because an album should be more than the sum of its parts.

That said, some of the beats on this one are just Madlib at his zenith. I mean, c'mon now, "The Comeup"??? Gets me every time...

Madlib did a really good job of sticking to the concept over the entire album. Some really nice tracks on here, as well as the legendary beat for what became "Auditorium" for Mos Def. There were some duds on here but there's a large enough volume of true bangers to make this one last a while in the CD player. It's probably the least erratic listen front to back of his instrumental albums.

totally agree. i don't know why people don't talk about this album as much. there is some absolute heat on this one and it def. sticks to the theme of sampling music from india. i definetely prefer these beat albums as opposed to the medicine show mixes he does, even though those are entertaining as well. i just feel these are more original because he makes beats out of them, as opposed to letting the original stuff just play out.

And I love it when Madlib stays focused. He really sticks to the script and makes the most of what he's limited himself to. I think there's a synergy going on here, and the fact is that he really made an album here rather than a beat tape.

it may seem more cohesive bc the source material is more uniform but to me thats exactly why it felt more like a "beat tape" than an album compared to 5/6 and now, RK

Got the vinyl bundle last week. I don't really remember hearing these besides Dil Withers. So far I like the India joints the best. I'm a sucker for beats with sitars and exotic instruments.

"Victory" is my shit. Not sure if it's the dude chanting, the funky, loose feel of the beat or what... But that little 20 second beat is my shit!

It's also at the very beginning of (variations).

But just know that saying it's an insult to anything that followed is very much an overreaction.

To me the first double 7'inchs were more on the Yesterdays New Quintet vibe than the rest of the Beat Konducta series; the problem I have with Madlib is that sometimes his beats are just boring loops but it's always gems inbetween which will end up being the 10 to 30 second smashed between other beats.
