I loaded "Hip-Hopera" onto my iPod about a month ago and I been playing that shit like it's new. "Sho Is Hype", the title track, "First Born"...a lotta good cuts on there besides "Pistol-Grip Pump". On another note "Pistol-Grip Pump" and Above The Law's "Black Superman" from another underrated 1994 album "Uncle Sam's Curse" are STILL two certified Cleveland party staples.

"First Born" is my shit! And I agree about Uncle Sam's Curse. People def slept on that one too. That "Black Superman" beat is one of the toughest beats of all-time and I love KMG's (RIP) performance on the title track.

Net Weight was one of the better songs on the compilation

it wasn't particularly good, but I dug what it was trying to do

And vooodu and all them were regulars on Friday Night Flavas and Wake Up so, it was good seeing them put some actual product out

Funny thing: In the summer of 1993, I worked at Tel-12 mall in Southfield at the arcade. Houseshoes worked at the A&W in the food court and one of Laswunzout worked as a security guard there (cat named Lorenzo, can't remember his last name or stage name for shit) Took a moment to remember dude's name too 'cause he also dated my one of my sisters for a good while.

I had that tape too (The Next Chapter). I got is specifically because they were on it.

>I fucked with Mykill Myers tho

But I could see how someone would think he's wack if they don't think his delivery is hitting. Everything he raps sounds like he just wrote it 10 minutes ago.

Yeah, me too.

I loved his flow, but I just couldn't get into the whole tape. I think I returned it to Sam Goody/Musicaland in exchange for something more enjoyable to me at the time.

The only other track of note to me was Sunbeams.

played that song so much it sounded dull compared to the rest of the tape. That was the anthem for rollin to the Omni over off 7 mile and the Lodge.

that if Volume 10 had just went ahead and let Ice Cube bite his style he could have been Mack 10 in Westside Connection. And that pretty much sums up my feelings on the piece. It's like every effort is being made to say he should have been a faux banger (faux life!!), and he let his fucking artistic integrity get in the way.

In fact that's a big problem I have with a lot of the revisionism in hip-hop. They can't even appreciate Hip-Hoppera for what it was. It's all about how problematic it was as the antithesis of success rap, without contextualizing why it was so important to have an antithesis to success rap. So they use the 'crossover' hit as an example of what shoulda woulda coulda, meanwhile the only way it was born was from an artist that was the antithesis of success rap.

45. "It kind of misses the cultural significance of the Good Life &"
In response to Reply # 40

Project Blowed

What the people who ran those places like Ben Caldwell really had in mind

The Good Life was a health food store and had huge 'conscious' vibes. You were not allowed to curse at the Good Life. It promoted creativity above negativity.

More than that it was a very real alternative to gang culture, and the type of music that was more celebratory of that.

I mean the Blowed at a definite tension to it, especially in the ciphers outside but it was always released artistically. Cats like Ellay Khule were involved in that life. Mikah Nine never spoke about his gang ties or neighborhood until he got on a mixtape with Jim Jones, turns out dude was tight with BPS in the Jungle. He neeeever talked about that shit in his years rhyming in LA.

The article says Volume 10 was similarly 'street' or whatever, but his music was so far beyond that mentality. Should he have instead, like you said, been a faux gangsta in order to sell records and promote an image of Los Angeles that was ultimately self-damaging instead of uplifting? I think it speaks more to his integrity that he turned all of that down because of how he viewed himself as an artist.
