With little blurbs about each album because I have the time
1. FlyLo - You're Dead
This just melted my brain when I first listened to it, some people will say its too short and often jarring (the transitions), but I love it. Probably my favorite Flying Lotus album now, and I love all of his albums.
2. Souls Of Mischief - There Is Only Now
The rhymes were always going to be dope, but I was wondering how Adrian Younge was going to accompany SoM on this one, as I liked his production for the Ghost album, but I thought it could've been better at times. The result here is some of the best production of this year, all done with live instrumentation, sounding like a 60s or 70s flick at times
3. FKA Twigs - LP1
An album that reveals its glory with repeated listens, at first I only liked a few tracks on this one, but now I love them all. These songs are all about the subtle details in the production that create a very ethereal and trippy atmosphere in the songs, it also helps that her voice is heavenly. If Bjork and Aaliyah could have a musical daughter, it would probably be FKA Twigs
4. Cunninlynguists - Strange Journey Vol 3
The best out of the Strange Journey Series, lots of features on this one and all of them are dope. Its no Orienology (I probably spelled this wrong), but it continues the hot streak CL have been on since their inception, Kno is one of the best producers in the game today easily IMO
5. Ty Segall - Manipulator
The album gets a bit same-y track to track, so its good that I like the general sound of this one, think if Tame Impala's sound were to get much grittier and less dreamy.
6. Mac De Marco - Salad Days
Of equal if not better quality than his first album, he continues to give his laid back, occasionally psychedelic vibe of whatever people are calling this (indie pop/rock?)
7. Freddie Gibbs/Madlib - Piñata
Don't really need to say much about this except that I'm glad it finally came out and although I don't think its straight up AMAZING like many others do, this is still great. Gibbs best project yet.
8. Moonchild - Please Rewind
Jazzy Neo-Soul, clearly influenced by the likes of Erykah Badu, D'Angelo etc, really good group from California that has just released their best album so far (this is their second)
9. JazzSpastiks - The Product
Dope jazzy boom bap producers, with some notable features (Yesh and Ladybug Mecca kill it)
10. Dag Savage (Johaz + Exile) - E&J
JOHAZ is a very dope MC and Exile delivers the type of beats that have made him (underground) famous, very dope album. Exile is also def one of my favorite producers doing it at the moment
