My personal fav is the Marley episode. Non stop "oh shit" moments all the way through. That D-Nice one was dope. Lord Finesse dropped mad shit too, this shit is gold for the true Heads.

My guess is PR will be releasing some of those vaulted beats for this album. I didnt even know The Joy used a vaulted beat from the late 90s. It doesnt sound like a late 90s PR. I actually didnt like the beat when WTT came out, I gotta play it again.

it's just fun for some people I guess to diminish his ability and contributions especially once the Dilla hype train left the station
but he's been putting out old music for most of his career, hell Petstrumentals was ten years old when it came out
it's really amazing and worthy of more notation when you think about it because most of our grandmasters don't get the level of appreciation that other music forms do

Pete himself in the podcasts was on the "Dilla hype train"

but he was bc of what he witnessed from the man not bc Questlove told him to as those of you constantly trying to reduce his status would have us believe is the source of the "hype"

I've never minimized him, he's one of my favorite guys on the beats
he just wasn't the omega of production like this place would have you believe but even that wasn't my point
I'm speaking to people throwing Pete/Primo/Marley under the bus to big him up, and doing so with a disturbing regularity and insistence

nice. He went out of his way to do so because that's
how he felt.

In this article:

http://www.egotripland.com/gallery/large-professor-sample-flips/1-jay-electronica-ft-tone-renaissance-man-web-track-2007/

Large Professor, whom I believe never truly worked with Dilla and probably only knew him through mutual friends like Pete Rock, went out of his way to essentially say he had his #1 choice for a sample flip.

That to me is amazing since it's probably easy to say that Pete would say something nice about a friend, but Large Pro is certainly someone who would have little incentive to promote a producer that wasn't of his generation and had little emotional attachment to him. He just respected his game, and every big name in hip hop production is always floored by his work.

Dilla's "fans" do a great job of spoiling what is truly a remarkable talent by lauding him in obviously impossible to be true ways, but the dude is a genius when you look at his work for what it is, if you ask me.

I listened to the podcast while shopping but I'm pretty sure they didnt bring up Lupe. They mostly talked about Heavy D, Nas, Jay-Z, The Common vs. Ice Cube beef, the music business, and some of his classic tracks.

>I rarely check for these.

It really is a great podcast, mostly because the
guests don't really feel like they're being interviewed,
but rather having an in depth conversation with dudes
they could kick it with, rather than a couple of hipsters

Recently:
Marley Marl
D-Nice (incredible)
Freddie Foxx
Damon Dash Part II

Older ones:
Foxy Brown (GREAT)
Wyclef
Damon Dash Part I (one of the best podcast interviews
of all time)
Nore
Cormega

I like some of the other non-traditional ones
like the Anil Dash interview...very interesting
(Most rap nerds didn't like it, though)

I even thought the Rap Genius one was good (if you
like the Rap Genius people, you'll like them more
after the podcast, if you hate them, you'll hate them
more...I feel like they were really themselves, for
better or worse)

Thankfully they didn't follow up with the "You Can't Stop The Prophet" remix, because a brother would have burst out in tears on the 1 train on my way to Trader Joe's lol. I would have subbed out the Bumpy Knuckles joint for the Jeru remix, but at the same time I love the backstory for the Bumpy project, plus it tied in with the last episode.

For one thing, I'd have liked to have heard more about him working with CL Smooth. I understand that it was probably a function of time, as they saved "T.R.O.Y." for last, but damn, I wanted to hear more about the dynamics of them working together, how they hooked up, etc. I didn't need an explanation on the "Make my beats, f#$%^&" or anything like that, but I feel like there was a huge chunk of history that made Pete Rock Pete Rock that they didn't give much shine too. He spent more time talking about knowing Biggie or working with Kanye and Jay than he did working with CL Smooth.

I liked them talking about A.D.O.R., and the P.E. remix, and the stuff about him coming up with Marley and Heavy D, and the Illmatic stuff, but there was a lot of stuff they could have touched on but didn't. He didn't really work with Biggie (besides giving Puff the idea for Juicy), but they spent a lot of time talking about him. And it seems like Jack asks every single person he interviews about Big L. It's just... weird.

All of the Big L stuff could have been skipped.
It's kind of a bad look to gloss over Pete Rock & CL Smooth like that, even Combat wasn't a fan of CL Smooth. I know I would be livid if they had Primo up there and only mentioned Guru sporadically.

and not be gay unless they really love one another
it seems to me that outside of industry shit they're fine, but I do think they need to REALLY sit down and talk one on one without the bullshit involved

work.
It just seems as though he's really in his shell a lot of the time, and comes out around people that he feels comfortable with. Who knows if he's even comfortable looking CL in the eye.

You get insight into their character from those who knew them since they can't speak for themselves anymore. However, Pete Rock already has lots of insight into a dead hip-hopper: Heav. And the stuff about Heav being his mentor and showing him the ropes in the game and worked with him was fascinating. Throwing Biggie and Big L into the mix was unnecessary considering Pete's rich history in the game.

And shoot, if he doesn't want to talk about CL, I'd still like to hear about Pete's own involvement in the group. Their first really known single/video was a Pete Rock solo track; I would have liked to get his thoughts on that, especially since he touched on what it was like to learn to become a rapper earlier in the interview. Shoot, I could have used him talking about making the INI album, the other album he produced in its entirety, working the singles, and how it ended up being shelved. As it stands, he mentioned Rob-O once the entire interview.

I'd also like to know if Rob Odendo was dissing CL Smooth on Fakin Jax. I like to assume that he was, but I've never gotten confirmation. What happened with the Young Guns situation? Combat blew up Pete's spot on that many moons ago. Also, what the hell happened to Mekolicious?
Grap Luva's interview with Live From The Writers Bench was more informative than this.

seriously this is the one question that never gets asked.

it must have been some bad blood between them for pete to stop working with him and never put any of his shit out.

i mean he even put out wack ass deda's lp out, but can't drop any meko shit.

meko's demo alone was clasic pete and i've been waiting to hear an album from him ever since i heard the original version of "verbal murder" with just mekolicious and buddha monk on the hook, back in '98.

someone needs to get at pete and ask him where's meko's "the rude youth" lp at?

also where's all the joints that he did with m.o.p. at? "here comes the realness" is the only one that has ever been heard and even that was only a future flavas exclusive.

It's not the LP, it's just a comp of 10 joints that you can find on youtube. Still worth having I guess.

As if "Pete Rock & CL Smooth" wasn't a major part of his career, if not his biggest legacy to hip-hop regardless of all the classic freelance production
