"10+ years later: dilla - da 1st installment, uh, sucks."
Mon Jun-16-14 11:48 PM by cherry_coke

decided to throw this for a spin as it is probably the least listened to dilla beattape i have a copy of.
not to mention it's one of only fully intact tapes as dilla actually sequenced it (meaning not spliced with other tapes like so many others that got passed around 10 years ago)

anyway, long story short:
there is maybe 5 good ideas on this whole tape.
the downside is it's 41 tracks.

...yeah.

i've never heard a bigger batch of duds offered on a beattape by a reputable producer.
i may be wrong but this tape was from either 02 or 03 during that period where he was chasing mainstream producers like rockwilder and making awful music with frank-n-dank.
the batch before(?) this was the one that made up the bulk of his contributions to jaylib.
i've long been vocal on how i thought that batch pretty much sucked too.
but in all honesty it was slightly more appealing than anything here.
the tape is comprised almost exclusively dull, uninspired minimoog clunkers and a few lackluster attempts at double time.
albeit, they're all well-constructed beats.
just nothing of value except the one frank-n-dank used for "ma dukes", "flyyyyy" (really just ok at best), and a couple others.

you know i always attributed dilla not really getting any placements in 01-05 to outside influences, but in all honesty if i was a rapper and you'd handed me this tape in 2003 - i would have passed on all of these too.

here's the first half as it's all i could find on youtube, but i warned you...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7inzRiyvS8M

and i'm sorry to offend the hardcore fans who still post here, i realize this is sacrilege to the cult of "you know who" crowd.
but it's 12 years later, this shit needs to be called for what it is.
truly an awful offering during the worst period in rap history.
and imo, a major blemish in his career.

It's definitely not his strongest outing, but I think there's more quality than you give it credit for. He was really beginning to turn himself around during this time period, so there's naturally going to be some mistakes made. My biggest issue with this installment was his drums; they simply were not effective and often made the beat more underwhelming than it deserved to be. When the drums were there, the beats were incredible (Vampires, Flyyy, etc)

Take Dilla's name off them and put them on Soundcloud, you'd get a totally different reaction from a lot of people
there are some good beats on it though, but yeah I can see a lot of people from the time period picking over them

I remember being underwhelmed by this tape when I first heard it, but I figured, hey, if all you do is make beats, there's gonna be SOME duds SOMEwhere.

But yeah, 10 got my ear especially...I used that break too. I like what he did with it.

being critical of the quality just seems like an attempt to take Dilla down a peg, and given his passing & resume it's very strange to take this approach

it just seems a weird thing to jump on when it's just a tape he passed to rappers

in my lurking i've noticed many feel the need to put Dilla in his place, so to speak & it's odd to me

Someone likes or doesn't like?
The guy isn't even going in or anything, just stating his opinion
Some people liked this one, some didn't, nothing wrong with that

if i'm not mistaken, this post originally had a DTS in it (if it didn't forgive me). i let it rock since it was dying a slow death. then, much to my chagrin...it got upped.

EDIT: it does have a DTS in it.

*MY* issue is the same as homie who posted up there. this shit wasn't meant for none of y'all/us to hear. yet, y'all in here judging the shit. and in the process, taking little shots at my boy. i don't like it. i think it's hoe shit. especially since he ain't here to tell y'all himself how hoeish it is.

I will say this though: I listened to this from a producer's perspective and as I went through it I can hear different MC's over these beats that would make y'all change your minds. I'm sitting here like "yeah... Phonte on this... Blu on this shit... Guilty Simpson and MED on this joint..." so on and so forth.

With the right cat spittin on 'em y'all would be on some "damn, Dilla was on some SHIT back then". Dilla made beats that stood by themselves as a complete composition, but these were meant to be complimented by a vocalist and as such may not have appeal without one over it.

---------------------------

I miss Tha D... But I'll never move back there.

You're allowed to like or not like anything you want, and if you're drawing the line at beat tapes then I'd say you have tons of threads to delete and the rules should change
And we all know if this wasn't Dilla there would be no problem, the "y'all weren't meant to hear it so you can't not like it" is just a Trojan horse for the sentiment
The people in the thread that like it heard it too, take them to task as well
