"how do you feel super off-beat programming of the mid-late 00's has aged..."
now that this isn't "new", or "buzzing"... what do you make of this kind of music?
i'm all for live programming with the life-like timing, but in the mid-late 00's it got taken to ridiculous levels where people were intentionally programming drums that sounded like they were programmed by someone with down syndrome.
at the time it "worked", but do you ever have any of this stuff come up on your playlist in 2014?
with the ultra-exacto quantification we've seen drum programming turn after lex luger, this stuff was pretty much left in the dust.
for me, i just had a song come up on random by s*m**am and i was shocked at how fucking wack it sounded with fresh ears.

I assume you're talking about Samiyam? I was never really a fan. There's countless others that still do it.
I like unquantized drums still way more than whats going on right now, but the super off beat just to be super off beat drums?
Nah, only in small doses and gotta be done right.
The SP-404 cats and their note repeat function can still get funky. That seems to be the wave of the last few years, moving past the super sloppy off beat drums. I think, at least.

"los angeles" comes up in my playlist every now and again. young montana?, knx, dorian concept, etc. guys like that show up occasionally as well

i never liked him. never understood why people did. it always sounded like someone trying very hard to do something "wrong" and not getting it right. i do like the fuzzy synths he used though
>what are your thoughts?
it's an interesting approach to adding some "humanity" (for lack of a better term) to what is (or at least is perceived as) a very mechanical process of making music on a computer and/or electronics. i like it when it's done well but it's very difficult to do so. it also has the unfortunate effect of really detracting from the listening experience when it's done incorrectly because it calls so much attention to itself

if the shit sounds wack now, it's because it was wack in the first place

I don't have anything against the stuff, just saying that these niggas are quick to go off about some shit and don't even take the time to really ingest it or when they do it's one some 'it grew on me' shit, which has nothing to do with the music itself

i was just riding the craze because well duh... everyone was. and that's how i like my music, preapproved by everyone's taste. thinking for yourself is as overrated as allowing for the fact that people may actually like shit that doesn't appeal to you. i mean it's so obvious anyone that not making the music i like is just trying to be special and differnent, and the only reason other people flock to them is just because they want to feel special and different too. my favorite thing is exposing how fraudulent they are like three or for years later when the shit they liked in the past is no longer the rage just to show they should have never liked that shit in the first place. fucking morons.

Pretty sure there's a couple of albums in my car right now that fit your description. __ I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!
Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some f*cking burgers.(c)Kno

Like what another poster said, it all depends on the song, I know Sa-Ra was in this department for making beats/songs off-beat on purpose but I think that was the fascination with their music though, everybody was in a J-Dilla zone and tried to replicate it until they got into their own vibe but not many people do that anymore except new kats who are just getting into it, so the cycle kind of repeats.
Now this joint right here is what I consider good (on-purpose) drunken programming:
--------- "We in here talking about later career Prince records & your fool ass is cruising around in a time machine trying to collect props for a couple of sociopathic degenerates" - s.blak

whenever i'm browsing soundcloud pages or youtube vids, and i see a pic of an mpc/sp303/404/etc i almost know that the beat is gonna have an early snare, late kick, dragging hi-hat, etc.
not that that's a good or a bad thing. just commenting.
