But I don't see it as Muddy having done it better... I think that's my thing. As much as they are the same they are very differnent songs and I think its mostly about the vocal inflections. Bo's version comes from a realer place for me, while Muddy comes from a super human place.

"All you pretty women, stand in line / I can make love to ya, in an hour's time"

vs.

"All you girls, sit on that line / I can make love to ya woman, in five minutes time"

LOL!!

It's like Bo is still trying to get that woman, while Muddy don't give a fuck, his manliness is on a level that she should be honored by the five minutes he'd give her.

like he's still trying to convince her (or him?) that he's a man.

but Muddy's is more confident. he knows he's a MAN. if she don't - fuck her. but how could she not?

Bo:

>"All you pretty women, stand in line / I can make love to ya,
>in an hour's time"

>vs.

Muddy

>"All you girls, sit on that line / I can make love to ya
>woman, in five minutes time"

as Muddy saying he could please a woman (or several) in 5 minutes' time (each).

Originally I had thought he was insulting Bo, casting the vocalist in Bo's light and saying he would only last 5 minutes. But since the rest of the song is so unapologetically bragadoccio and first-person perspective, that's clearly not right.

in 5 minutes. Muddy was saying he could do it faster b/c he knows what he's doing. SHE would be satisfied in only 5 minutes b/c he's skilled.

despite the fact that I'm pretty sure this exact poll was posted before.

But yeah, each has its benefits, I think.

Hoochie Coochie Man is the template for that riff. Sonically it's easily may favorite of any of the postings - the sound on the harmonica, that's Little Walter using the classic high-gain blues harp sound. Doesn't hurt that it's Fred Below on drums, always understated to perfection. Rhythmically, too, it's the simplest of the three songs, and I think that facet pushes the point home the best. And Muddy's vocal isn't over-the-top but the way it's recorded, it verges on clipping several times and to great effect. So I think that's my pick for favorite.

I'm A Man, I dunno. It's got a charming quality that's almost punk, in that Bo's taking this sound that is incredible but he can't quite get it right so he just does it his best and doesn't give a fuck that it's nowhere as tight as the original.* I mean, the guitar, the drums, the harmonica... it's almost analogous to the Beatles doing Twist & Shout; there's no denying that its appeal is very different from the original's, despite the similarity.
Plus, maracas.
*Researching the tune, it's surprising that it sounds so comparatively half-assed; Bo's backing band for it had two key players from Muddy's (pianist Otis Spann, Muddy's half-brother, and Wilie Dixon, the composer & writer of HCM). And Billy Boy Arnold isn't a slouch on the harmonica, though he was no Little Walter.
Maybe considering all that the sonic half-assedness is mostly in my head rather than on the record... but still, I call it like I hear it.

Mannish Boy is a pretty masterful put-down, even though it serves as evidence that Muddy was shook by Bo's audacity at the riff. The vocal delivery is absolutely commanding, but its very position as a response is sort of detrimental to it.

As far as those Muddy remakes from the '70s with Johnny Winter producing, they're still great records, but it's really the production on the drums that I object to. They're tighter and more prominent but also BIG sounding, which isn't what I love about the drum parts on the originals. There's none of that intangible small low-budget studio feel to them. But there are a lot of people who prefer that, of course.

This is what I'm getting at when I say he's taking it to supernatural levels. Like it's clearly a pissing contest by Mannish Boy and the only way he can win is by going full monty, when I've always felt the heart of the song was about a man trying to convince himself as well as the woman he's impressing. Muddy is clearly just trying to say I own this shit Bo!!

these are my 3 favorite Blues cuts. when i think of Blues i think of these records. the poll came up today b/c i quoted 'I'm a MAYNE' in a reply over in GD. and i didn't know which song i wanted to reference and i settled on 'Manish Boy' b/c to me that one is the toughest of the 3. and then i couldn't decide which recording of the song i prefer. i decided i'm all about the re-recording b/c it has more MUSCLE behind it. probably for the reasons you named.

fuck you.

really get me....

particularly after the car accident when Muddy couldn't stand up for the entire shows...he'd start the song sitting on his stool...then it would get good to him and he'd get up out his chair, stalk the stage and do his dance....... very powerful imagery...
