He flew under the radar but he still had some solid shit on his later albums. He didn't really ever "fall off" lyrically, in my eyes, he just kinda stopped making noise above a certain level.
But - that said, I agree. His first 3-4 albums were really, really great stuff. And you said it perfectly. He was really good on the mic, had an interesting voice, had the right production and guest features, and had a good mix of underground and mainstream stuff and none of the mainstream stuff was ever too poppy.
I kinda miss X in the limelight. He was fun. I remember him on the Up In Smoke Tour DVD throwing condoms out the window and just literally looking like he was having the best time anyone's ever had, laughing his ass off and shit.
