"10 Excuses Rappers Make When Their Album Flops (link)"

I'm still a fan of Ghostface, but I won't buy anything from him unless I hear good things about it first. Dude has like 14-15 official projects (including Theodore Unit, Wu-Block & Wu-Massacre). I've purchased half of them and I'm content with that.

People like to bring out the conspiracy theory welcome mats for cats like Chief Keef and Montana, but the amount of press she got compared to how many fans of her I saw in real life didn't jive at all.

That album did have different records (i.e. positive ones w/more singing) and no one wanted it. Once he went back to tracks for girls to dance to he got (somewhat) successful again.

...and didn't that Nicki record end up going Plat?

I can understand if it was independent acts prior to the internet-era where you *literally* couldn't find the album in the stores due to bad distribution-expecting people/stores/whatever to special-order the record without too much info available is a bit much. Additionally, I can give debutants a pass because it's important to make a mark so that people notice you in the first place and without promotion, that is hard.

However, it's always been such a lame excuse for acts with like 2-3 records or more out. If you have made a big enough impression on people initially, that fanbase *will* find out about a new record, if not, you were either a trendy one-hit-wonder thing, simply fell off or only had casual fans. Seriously, hearing shit like that from acts like, say, Aerosmith crack me up; they shouldn't need too much promotion to sell to their substantial fanbase and they shouldn't need to gain new fans either in order to sell-it's a lame excuse...

...you're at the point of not needing any heavy push compared to some new artist or group. Not saying you shouldn't get any promo but at that point, it should be where your fans will easily know about your next album.
