"MJ's "smooth criminal" is a stream of conscious narrative from a killer...."

the song starts with the protagonist having hearing his own pulse race
as the police officer approach him for questioning.

then his mind begins to race,
narrating the crime from a dissociated point of view...

As He Came Into The Window
It Was The Sound Of A Crescendo
He Came Into Her Apartment
He Left The Bloodstains On The Carpet
She Ran Underneath The Table
He Could See She Was Unable
So She Ran Into The Bedroom
She Was Struck Down, It Was Her Doom

then he hears the voices of the first responders,
trying to help the victim:

Annie Are You OK
So, Annie Are You OK
Are You OK, Annie
Annie Are You OK
So, Annie Are You OK
Are You OK, Annie
Annie Are You OK
So, Annie Are You OK
Are You OK, Annie
Annie Are You OK
So, Annie Are You OK,
Are You OK, Annie

then the falls apart during a police interrogate him.
"DAGONIT! Baby"

the protagonist cries:
"I don't know.

I don't know.

I don't know."

all the while, his mind is racing, remembering the sound of the first responders...
rememebring how he committed the crime...
hearing the detectives talk about the evidence against him...

(Annie Are You OK)
I Don't Know!
(Will You Tell Us, That You're OK)
I Don't Know!
(There's A Sign In The Window)
I Don't Know!
(That He Struck You-A Crescendo Annie)
I Don't Know!
(He Came Into Your Apartment)
I Don't Know!
(Left Bloodstains On The Carpet)
I Don't Know Why Baby!
(Then You Ran Into The Bedroom)
I Don't Know!
(You Were Struck Down)
(It Was Your Doom-Annie!)
(Annie Are You OK)
Dang Gone It-Baby!
(Will You Tell Us, That You're OK)
Dang Gone It-Baby!
(There's A Sign In The Window)
Dang Gone It-Baby!
(That He Struck You-A Crescendo Annie)
Hoo! Hoo!
(He Came Into Your Apartment)
Dang Gone It!
(Left Bloodstains On The Carpet)
Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!
(Then You Ran Into The Bedroom)
Dang gone It!
(You Were Struck Down)
(It Was Your Doom-Annie!)

that's what i realized just now.
what seems to be sloppy lyrics are actually a gripping, stream of consciousness
narrative.

I honestly doubt whether even MJ himself analyzed it that much.

He was never the deepest songwriter. He relied on groove and infectiousness...
hence him being the king of pop.
Mike was big on doing what felt and sounded right, whether dancing, singing or
composing. I think that's all it is. He was simply saying what sounded good to him.
He had a childlike approach, which was part of his charm.

she obviously survived ergo her ability to tell the
first responders "i don't know"

obviously written from the perspective of police or first responders
nice interesting reach though

along the same lines...
if the protagonist to "billie jean" is in fact the baby's father...
(which-- let's face it--is possible, since the baby does look like him
and they were dancing until the early morning
and he did go back with her to her room)

then that explains why that track is followed by "human nature," the tale of a lothario headed out for a night on the prowl,
"pyt," the story of a man flirting with a young woman,
and makes one "the lady in my life" sound chillingly disingenuous.

hell, the only song from side 1 of thriller i really like is "wanna be starting something"
and if you put that song on the beginning of side 2 instead of beat it...
hell, you've got half a concept album. (since Billie jean is referenced in WBSS) lol
