it's impossible for me to not vote GZA (also, he's the only one i've seen do a solo set)...but 5 years ago I would've said Ghost, and 10+ years ago I would've said Meth.

I find they've both got a great balance of talent and entertainment, both of which are important when ranking MCs in my opinion.

Gza is the most technically talented but I don't really enjoy listening to him for extended periods because it's almost a chore.

Dirt Dog is the most entertaining by a long shot but the same skills aren't there.

So yea. I'll take Meth just cause I think he's got the best balance. Ghost ain't far behind tho.

My favorite in 2014 is probably Raekwon. He just has an ill style and combines everything into one the best in my opinion. He can tell stories like Ghost. His delivery is sharp like Meth. He has ill phrasing like Deck. He can string words like GZA. I just appreciate his overall style the most. He's the most similar to favorite MCs of mine like Nas and AZ. He fits into that type of ill MC to me.

Inspectah Deck to me is the all around nicest pure MC in the sense that you can rely on him to give you that ill opening set it off verse or the crazy guest spot but never made even a good album. But he has the most memorable verses and switches up his content pretty well while maintaining his style.

Method Man is the star of the group and always will be. Personality, flow, voice, versatile but like Deck never made that true classic even if his output has been better than Deck.

Ghostface isn't my favorite by any means. His delivery can be a bit rough and his lyrics, though good, are straight forward. However, probably has the best track record as far as solo albums go, though Raekwon has been giving him a run for his money.

GZA is the technical one but not the way most people give him credit for. GZA is more of a wordsmith than a technically nice MC because when you use that term I relate it to the delivery and the rhyme patterns etc. GZA excels at his metaphors and the images his paints. He made my favorite solo album but after that...not much.

ODB is the wild one. He is the fun one to listen to but as far as MCing goes...his style doesn't lend itself to that classically nice MC that I prefer. And that's fine because he does his own shit and it works but it puts him in a place where you either love him or you don't similar to the way some view GZA.

Masta Killa has earned some points but really half of those are due to little to no expectations. His lyrics are average, his flow is disjointed at times and he doesn't have the personality to carry him.

U-God is just there. But he does serve his purpose. Someone has to be the worst and he fills those shoes nicely. It's like youve gotta have 9 batters and someone has to bat 9 so if you can get some good production here and there you're not mad at it.

RZA I have never been a fan of. He's better than U-God and Masta Killah and he has impressed me on an MC level more so than ODB has but overall he just isn't my thing. His mouth full of food sound bothers me. Hearing his spit hit the pop stop is also irritating.

If I had to rank them from 1-9 as far as my favorites go

1 Raekwon
2 Method Man
3 Inspectah Deck
4 GZA
5 Ghostface Killah
6 ODB
7 RZA
8 Masta Killa
9 U-God

I love Meth and Ghost for different reasons. I want to say Meth is nicer than Ghost but Ghost has way more banging songs. When Meth is in top form I don't think anyone else in the clan can touch him.

It was a hard decision cause I do like Meth & GZA but when it comes to the one kat who always seem to interest me when he spits a verse on a song, Raakwon get my vote.

with rae and rza fighting for 3 and 4.

kinda comes down to albums for me. then verses.

ghost has the best catalogue--meaning he has the most great LPs (supreme, ironman, fishscale, OG bulletproof wallets).

gza has liquid swords and grandmasters. beneath the surface is underappreciated. (and he introduced me to Ka on PT. bonus points).

raekwon has THE album. and its sequal. he was my first favorite wu member. still remembering hearing OB4CL for the first time and thinking "this shit is using english words, but it don't sound like english" (in a good way). i was used to e40 slang; rae and ghost opened a whole new world for me.

rza has the "sunshower" and "12 jewelz" verses/songs. plus he murdered all his verses on the first round of solo LPs. shit, he was doing that emotional style before ghostface on "tears" too!

feel bad for having meth down around 5. he was the first superstar. lots of people wouldn't even be checking for the wu if it wasn't for meth.

deck was the MVP of "forever." kinda became a vitcim of bad timing. he may have had a classic LP if it dropped in late 97.

ODB--i probably listened to "return" just as much as the others.

like rza, i loved all of u-god's verses on the first batch of solo LPs. and i actually loved "keynote speaker." it was his best solo to me.

masta killa came thru with "no said date". i actually really dug his slow, no-rhyme style too.

and fuck y'all, capadonna dropped a classic with "the pillage."

Then after that it's:

GZA
RZA
Ol' Dirty Bastard
Masta Killa
Inspectah Deck
U-God

Ghost probably has the most albums that I like but Rae's style is my favorite.

I didn't say RZA was better than Deck.

And people can say that No Said Date is better than every Deck album and I may even agree but at the end of the day, I rather listen to the great tracks off of Uncontrolled Substance more than anything on No Said Date. And that's no question.

Either way...Deck has the most memorable verses out of any of them and to me, has the highest ceiling. He just never got the proper solo album and guidance from someone like RZA overseeing it.

CREAM
Protect Ya Neck
Duel of the Iron Mic
Cold World
Guillotine
Assassination Day
Full Rap Metal Jacket
Triumph
For Heaven's Sake
A Better Tomorrow
Tru Master
Above The Clouds
Tres Leches

Shit, that's just off the top of my head. When Deck goes in...no one in the Wu is touchig him in my opinion. And this cat has him ranked 8th!

I swear I don't know where some of y'all come from.

In response to Reply # 26

When the group was at it's peak, he was the best rapper in the group in my opinion. To me, he had the best verses on their best songs more often than anyone else.

I guess it's not as big of a factor to me that others put out better solo albums, and it really doesn't matter to me that others are putting out better material than him 15-20 years after the groups peak.

I already agreed below that this is a favorite MC poll so it's all good.

and I already explained my opinions on each MC which does agree that Deck hasn't made a good album.

but what's the point of saying he's only good in group settings?

in those settings he's has an argument that he's the best in the group period which is what everyone has already said.

to claim Masta Killa is better based on No Said Date is straight bullshit if you ask me.

but this post asks who's your FAVORITE.
If Deck is somebody's least favorite out of the crew (next to least, whatever)
that's just what it is. Can't argue favorites.

Incarcerated Scarfaces
Protect Your Neck
CREAM
Da Mystery Of Chessboxin
Verbal Intercourse
Shadowboxin
Labels
Ice Cream
Daytona 500
Shimmy Shimmy Ya

I could go on forever looking at all of the shit I left off.

Yup, I'll get in this line.. you wouldn't ask which is my favourite child

For me though really

If it's 36 chambers era it's

GZA
Deck
Meth
Rae

Forever album (based on my memories from years ago) I think was
Deck
RZA (might be controversial but I loved every verse he dropped. This was his peak for me).
Meth
Ghost

And the order of favourite continues to change dependent on the year and album. Ghost was my favourite mc period 2000 to 2006, so yeah it varies..

I'm now just hoping GZA has enough in him to make Dark Matter a classic, then I can die happy..

I've they were all in a cypher, I think Meth would just crush it,

It changes like every 5 years. Right now Deck & masta Killa. Rae had it previously. Ghost prior to that. Gza/Meth/Dirty in the early days. Rza briefly in the late 90's.

GOAT group hands down.

5. RZA
6. INS
7. Masta
8. U God
9. ODB

GZA is my favorite overall... lyrically, and the backing production he's had on most of his albums.

GFK... everyone loves da Ghost. Crazy storyteller.

Meth is my favorite for causal listening and a good ol time. I'm obsessed with Tical and Tical 2

Rae, well I just love OB4CL. Good flow too

I ranked RZA higher because he does have a unique flow, and he catches my ear. The Gravediggaz stuff is what has him higher.

I have yet to listen to INS and U God's debuts, but I've heard snippets and i felt INS's sounded a bit better.

I remember seeing Masta was being guided by GZA, so he must be a good lyricist. I have none of his music.

I can't listen to ODB. I have his first 2 albums and I just can't. He's OD funny but not for me lol.
