I happen to love Cornell West.

Don't even dislike Dyson on the whole, met him in West Philly a decade or so ago in a bar by UPENN and had a cool conversation on everything from Malcolm to McNabb for about 20 minutes.

Dude just overdoes his act when it comes to hip-hop which becomes a convenient (and revenue-generating) hook to springboard into other topics/themes.

There's such a strained professorial tone in these hip-hop books he puts out (unfortunately we don't have enough books from people actually of the culture thus far but it will get there in time) that some of the loose connections and tenuously linked sidebars results in as much thematic symmetry as the Ice Cube-helmed NWA/Raiders 30-for-30 and/or to a lesser degree the Pac/Tyson one.

The first to admit Dyson knows more about a great deal of subjects than me, as you've already pointed out in your reply (as if approval of my opinion in a convo we weren't having was something that I solicited & sought).

One of which is actually being black.

True Story.

While I consider myself well-read on say, canonical black authors from Wright to Baldwin up thru 80's babies like Edgar Wideman or recent upstarts like LaValle......imagine he'd stomp me there too.

The same for areas I've studied after the fact but not been present on earth or persecuted due to pigmentation during, like the civil rights movement that Dyson was born into while being old enough to witness Detroit burn in '68 firsthand.

But please believe, past decade of pyrotechnics/propaganda/affiliations with iconic figures of the genre seeking critical and intellectual validation aside?

What Michael Eric Dyson's AARP professional academic ass could show me about hip-hop music and culture would fit on one side of a dusty, yellowing-cardboard-sleeve, scotch-tape-above-the-top-holes-for-dubbing-purposes, K9-Posse 'This Beat Is Military' cassingle buried somewhere in my folks basement.

As a kid who grew up living/breathing/actively-engaging with rap music in time to see it reach an early bloom in the second half of the 80's much like the hairs sprouting from my balls, I side-eyed Bill Maher (even in jest it felt surface-y) telling Nas how he'd been the one to make poetry 'hard/macho' (code words in his world for blackness but he fucks black girls so I'm told it's all good) for the first time in human history on an album 'about being a tough street dude'.

Jigga is one of my all-time favorites but Dyson at Georgetown teaching a Sociology course on 'The Urban Theodicy of Jay-Z', using Decoded as its textbook to a bunch of white liberal-arts majors whose parents pay 70 grand a year is hilarious and mostly harmless but it should be noted-this was the same kind of hot-air-hoity-toity empty rhetoric that helped usher rock & roll into a mothballed casket.

for a retarded kid for being able to formulate a sentence. Michael Eric Dyson
is able to take what he says, clean it up, and make it more palatable for the
audience.... but not only that... it's just like Nas said in the beginning; Dyson
is the guy who comes from a generation that usually frowns upon Hip Hop, but
he takes an interest in it so much that he advocates for US in this kind of platform.
In short, he does what JayZ always claimed that he himself did... Dyson explains
Hip Hop and breaks down how great its writers really are. He helps people
understand it in a whole new light and from a whole different perspective.
More pointedly, this nigga rides for us.
He even said IN THIS VERY INTERVIEW that he's not waiting on history to tell
him what he already knows... and that's that Hip Hop is birthing some of the
greatest poets of our time... just like authors of "classic literature" who were
trashed in their day. I don't give a motherFUCK if you don't like Dyson. He's
pushing for our greats to be recognized for their genius. How the hell do you
hate on that?

I've heard the criticisms of Dyson that sometimes he just doesn't talk in plain
English, however, he's often attempting to speak to two vastly different groups
of people simultaneously. The only intellectual to every truly give a fuck about
Hip Hop from what I can tell, so I ain't mad. He doesn't just try to understand it,
he identifies with it.
