Hip Hop came right off of the heels of Disco and was highly influenced by P Funk (who had a member wearing a wedding dress on stage) and of course Prince who debuted basically when commercial Hip Hop was born. Bambatta, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 and others all wore feminine shit long before any of these current dudes were born. Jamar likes to conveniently leave that out or say "oh well I wasn't really feeling that either" but the fact is dating back to the roots of Hip Hop there has been some "suspect" shit being worn by many of the genre's pioneers.

The same way they partied to P Funk & Prince. If those dudes were "dissed" so hard their would have never been a platform for Run DMC to take it to the next level. Run DMC defined the next era of Hip Hop look by appropriating what dudes in the street were wearing. The average joe wasn't wearing all leather outfits...that was an image. Just like Flash, Bambatta and all of the other's had an image.. You can't just erase the pioneers influence or act like people weren't feeling them simply because you don't like their style in retrospect.

At a certain point Run DMC VERY quickly turned into a costume (had to wear addidas 24-7, etc), by the time Tougher Then Leather came around things changed (Look at the fashion in the movie Paid In Full, which took place around that tour). Id also argue that they didn't really set a 'street' trend; Just Ice dressed like a coogi rastafarian, Slick Rick a Pimp, Kool Moe Dee was still rocking Eddie Murphy Leather suits...only thing that they had that was rocked on the street were their gold rope chains.

It's still a uniform. Nevermind the fact that it was Russell's suggestion that they all dress alike and use JMJ as the model. If someone is telling you what to wear then guess what..that's a fucking costume. Everything is "leftover" from another generation. Hip Hop wasn't the first or only genre were people dressed down to a certain degree. Punk did it (and had a big influence on some early Hip Hop fashion as well) before and so did Country.

But your point is wrong because we already acknowledged that plenty of rappers have worn costumes/stage outfits. Regardless of why it was done it was done. There's never been a time in the genre when some significant portion of the culture didn't have some sort of stage gear on regardless of what that was. Whodini's style was very much a costume. Kwame's polkadots. All leather outfits, Biggie's whole fat dude with style look. the S1-W's look. All of these things are costumes and well thought out and planned.
