1)After being hypermasculine SOOOOOO long it moved into clearly parody territory, it's not surprising that there would be an era of blowback

2)Considering the loads of articles about how gender roles are changing/new roles men, etc...it it really surprising it filtered down to hip-hop?

I mean Mos Def said it best

"Listen.. people be askin me all the time,
"Yo Mos, what's gettin ready to happen with Hip-Hop?"
(Where do you think Hip-Hop is goin?)
I tell em, "You know what's gonna happen with Hip-Hop?
Whatever's happening with us"
If we smoked out, Hip-Hop is gonna be smoked out
If we doin alright, Hip-Hop is gonna be doin alright
People talk about Hip-Hop like it's some giant livin in the hillside
comin down to visit the townspeople
We +are+ Hip-Hop
Me, you, everybody, we are Hip-Hop
So Hip-Hop is goin where we goin
So the next time you ask yourself where Hip-Hop is goin
ask yourself.. where am I goin? How am I doin?
Til you get a clear idea"

Hip Hop came right off of the heels of Disco and was highly influenced by P Funk (who had a member wearing a wedding dress on stage) and of course Prince who debuted basically when commercial Hip Hop was born. Bambatta, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 and others all wore feminine shit long before any of these current dudes were born. Jamar likes to conveniently leave that out or say "oh well I wasn't really feeling that either" but the fact is dating back to the roots of Hip Hop there has been some "suspect" shit being worn by many of the genre's pioneers.

why is run-dmc so big???

because they were the first cats to present the hip hop image

flash and them were following the cot dayum disco cats. there weren't doing their own thing

if you went to the parks people were dressed like that? lol

i digress….

run-dmc defined hip hops look. the cats that came b4 were following the disco tradition.

run-dmc followed JMJ street couture style

The same way they partied to P Funk & Prince. If those dudes were "dissed" so hard their would have never been a platform for Run DMC to take it to the next level. They themselves were huge fans of Flash & Cold Crush so don't try and make it seem as if they weren't the stars of their era because of how they dressed.

We're talking about the 70's. People didn't look to rappers to "represent thug life" or any of the common goofy shit that goes on now. They were seen as entertainers and entertainers have always been able to get away with wearing crazy shit.

Run DMC defined the next era of Hip Hop look by appropriating what dudes in the street were wearing. The average joe wasn't wearing all leather outfits...that was an image. Just like Flash, Bambatta and all of the other's had an image.. You can't just erase the pioneers influence or act like people weren't feeling them simply because you don't like their style in retrospect.

>1 i said cats dissed them for that shit (how they dressed)
>and they did. did charlie murphy call em shirts and blouses?
>you think cats didn't clown em? did i say cats didn't rock to
>it?

At the time not really. When niggas was rocking the extra smug nuthuggers in lets say Beat Street nobody cared. Of COURSE after the fact we can look back and clown the fashion, EVERYBODY clowns fashion after the fact ie modern rockers making fun of 80's hair metal, etc. Doesn't dispute the fact that androgynous fashion was popular in early hip-hop hey days (along with everyone else in the 80's). AT THE TIME, it was cool.

>2 run dmc dressed exactly how JMJ dressed lol. If you was a
>street dude with money in the 80s you did have leather blazers
>and pants and all kinda fly dapper dan shit

The thing was there as some pushback, JMJ had to TALK them into going street because it just wasn't popular at the time*. I also find it interesting leather pants gets a pass, lol

>3 if you saying bambatta and flash and them was following the
>disco shit…you automatically admitting that was a leftover
>from the previous joint…

>4 i know they were entertainers i said that. again my point
>is that rappers dont wear fucking costumes they dress how
>people in the streets dress. run dmc looked like cats in the
>80s with money to me

Very narrow view, but at least you stated "To me" meaning your opinion. At a certain point Run DMC VERY quickly turned into a costume (had to wear addidas 24-7, etc), by the time Tougher Then Leather came around things changed (Look at the fashion in the movie Paid In Full, which took place around that tour). Id also argue that they didn't really set a 'street' trend; Just Ice dressed like a coogi rastafarian, Slick Rick a Pimp, Kool Moe Dee was still rocking Eddie Murphy Leather suits...only thing that they had that was rocked on the street were their gold rope chains.

>5 i said how the pioneers dressed was wack…i bet muscles would
>admit that shit himself. never called them sack

See my response to #1, same way if I popped out wearing Karl Kani and Lugz id get clowned; all fashion falls out of style and becomes "wack".

*It sucks LL Cool J killed his career the way he did, because looking at it after the fact not only was he a pioneer MC he was also a pretty fashion forward dude in the 80's.

do a search for dapper dan... MCM suits and all that shit

where did mike tyson fight mitch blood green? lol

if you dont think cats was wearing leather blazers and pants you buggin

and the nut huggers in beat street werent no where comparable to the COSTUMES entertainers wore. they didnt even STYLE loose fitting clothes

and JMJ dressed like that. was he a street dude yes? was he the "cool" one yes! lol. cats will argue anything to be right

again...the early rap groups followed a disco style (they made really fast dance tracks too...that didnt sample)

run dmc codified the hip hop style and sound that was found in the parks and on the street

the rappers you are using dressed like that at designated times. they were costumes lol. if you don't understand the concept of costumes I can't help you

and u tried to use some outlier mfers to prove a point some point that was nonsense anyway cuz u ya self said it was a disco leftover. even more to the fact that NOBoDY dressed that stupid shit in the street. do you not see the designation?

the only rappers that dressed like that were the ones signed to majors (surprise) that came right behind disco

I understand the concept of costumes, that's the thing. When Kanye puts on a mask he can't see through or rocks a kilt suddenly its "LIFESTYLE", yet when those old rappers were doing it was "COSTUMES" lol. You are the one moving the goalpost to fit your argument.

That's the thing actually, we beefing at Young Thug but when I saw him at SXSW dude had a gold chain, white t-shirt, and jeans on stage., OBVIOUSLY he's trolling, or using your vernacular, "A COSTUME"

Are the young hip-hop dudes dressing feminine or just pants that fucking fit as opposed to 20 years of baggy jeans and XXXXL t-shirts

who been wearing costumes in the last 30 years though? lol. you are a thick headed cat. my whole point of bringing run dmc up was to say that's when the hip hop style was introduced and it represented cats on the street and how they dressed. so you saying the old guys were wearing costumes - yes they were because people didn't dress like that walking around. and now u saying these guys is wearing costumes. u only proving my damn point lol

In retrospect people clown styles from the past all the time. It's not as you described "the reason that Run DMC blew up". Never mind the fact that they had Russell Simmons, great songs and times change. Nope boil it all down to how they dressed.
>
>2 run dmc dressed exactly how JMJ dressed lol. If you was a
>street dude with money in the 80s you did have leather blazers
>and pants and all kinda fly dapper dan shit

So if that isn't how Run (A PK) and DMC (A good kid who went to St John's) truly dressed and they were just following JMJ's lead then how is that any different than what other folks did? It's still a uniform. Nevermind the fact that it was Russell's suggestion that they all dress alike and use JMJ as the model. If someone is telling you what to wear then guess what..that's a fucking costume. They're first videos and photos after they stopped wearing the plaid jacket that Run used to rock was very much planned and very much a uniform. Even if the idea is "Hey let's dress like dudes in the street" it's still a uniform/costume.
>
>3 if you saying bambatta and flash and them was following the
>disco shit…you automatically admitting that was a leftover
>from the previous joint…

Everything is "leftover" from another generation. Hip Hop wasn't the first or only genre were people dressed down to a certain degree. Punk did it (and had a big influence on some early Hip Hop fashion as well) before and so did Country.
>
>4 i know they were entertainers i said that. again my point
>is that rappers dont wear fucking costumes they dress how
>people in the streets dress. run dmc looked like cats in the
>80s with money to me

But your point is wrong because we already acknowledged that plenty of rappers have worn costumes/stage outfits. Regardless of why it was done it was done. There's never been a time in the genre when some significant portion of the culture didn't have some sort of stage gear on regardless of what that was. Whodini's style was very much a costume. Kwame's polkadots. All leather outfits, Biggie's whole fat dude with style look. the S1-W's look. All of these things are costumes and well thought out and planned.
>
>5 i said how the pioneers dressed was wack…i bet muscles would
>admit that shit himself. never called them sack

The way most dudes dressed 30 or 40 years ago is wack after the fact. Those MCM outfits were wack. Cross Colours was wack. Bell Bottoms were wack. That's what happens with style. Shit changes.
>
>6 never said anything about thugs and such... read more

I do need to read more...just not your posts because I gain absolutely nothing from it.

(1) i didn't say the sole reason run-dmc blew up was fashion. that was ya dumb ass imagination. go look. if you think the styling and posturing of the group wasn't a major component to blowing up do you… go watch a documentary. but i was there lol. nobody wanted to be melle mel …everybody wanted to be run.

(2) if you or dumb reg can find one place in the post where my point has been about how the fashion looked (as in my opinion)…i'll wait. my point the whole time has been that the homosexual lifestyle is being marketed to the youth

(3) i said the early village people looking costumes a HANDFUL of rappers wore were costumes. my evidence for this is…THEY DIDNT DRESS LIKE THAT OFF STAGE.

(4) i said rappers dress in the fashion of the streets. theres no difference in how the treacherous 3 dressed or busy bee or funky four etc and how the majority of NYC was dressing…following that from biz markie to YZ all dressed like regular cats. why people started asking questions about 3000? like is he gay? lol cuz he stepped out the comfort zone of dressing like his audience

(5) is young thug wearing a costume? maybe. but it dont matter to my point. in fact i think it strengthens my point. if thats the angle of the marketing…who is it marketed to? lol

your just a sheep who engages and has submerged himself into groupthink

that's usually what happens to small minds easily influenced

if you don't think the homosexual lifestyle is being marketed than LOL

one of the editors from vibe a few years back told my photographer wife the whole reason he took the job was to "get the urban market comfortable with homoerotic imagery"

this was around the time cats was pinking it up and g-unit was running around with those feminine ass wife beaters

... it has just increased since

not that I expect your dumb ass to understand. you and your dumb ass partner made all kinda of leaps to what I was saying when all I said was they using hip hop to market homosexuality. is that "homophobic"? no it's a fact. but you so sensitive you can't even have a logical conversation

y'all were having a conversation about something else

whether people style looks ridiculous over time
lord jamars mental state
whether people in the streets wore dapper dan lol

I don't know about you, but I saw plenty of penises in gym class.
Listened to a bunch of house music.
Read Seventeen magazine (well, really jerked off to it, porn's hard to come by at 13 years old and my sister had a subscription)

Ain't none of em made me want to be 'gay'

If you guys are afraid dat gay now in hip-hop, just wait till the 'lifestyle' gets accepted as marriage equality goes, etc.

Plus, we are having a debate on an asswhipe who calls himself a 'hip-hop conservative' who's title is problematic as fuck.

So far you have danced around terminology (those are costumes, these are not) talked about the big money major labels (who have almost always been involved in hip-hop background shenanigans since Rappers Delight) and purposely worded your conversation because if you just replaced 'lifestyle' with 'gay' even you would see how ridiculous your argument sounds.

I just don't see what the issue is. Hair metal rockers were wearing full makeup, teased hair, ass jeans (and not always in "costume"). If there's going to be a whole subset of gay hip-hop, bring it as long as the music is dope.

As far as societal concerns are you've got things like the prison industrial complex, several high profile 'lets murk a black teen for the fuck of it' cases from Fruitville to the Florida movie shooting theater.

And if anything, outside of just the general US fucking with us its probably expected hyper-masculinity that leads to much of our downfall (gotta pay back disrespects, can't be seen weak, therapy? LOLZ, emotion is for pussies, etc). And yet you guys are worried about the gay mafia. I mean, by all means focus on who's sucking who's dick, it's your prerogative. But there are ultimately bigger fish to fry.

they're willing to cop pleas for anything out of fear of being "left behind".

this dude has one song.

just like keef chief. one fucking song.
and 25+ men who still consider themself hip are scrambling to remain involved.

it's crazy to watch all the contortions year after year...
from drake R&B rap made for your big sister, to dennis the menace rap like tyler the creator to whatever else...

this shit is what it is. stop trying to justify it for more than it is.
these dudes likely will be replaced in 18 months.

Nigga Kanye fucking wifed up a the worlds most famous porn star star = questionable, pushing dat gay agenda.

Who else is there? A$AP Rocky was fucking that wanna be white chick rapper chick with ass, Chief Keef got kicked off instagram for putting up a pic of him getting dome, and quiet as kept Drake is racking up celeb numbers that rival Jeters (who said light skinned niggas is going out of style)

Obviously Young Thug is an extreme example (id argue he's got two songs btw) but I find it pretty fucking laughable the examples that the of the gay mafia (c) are throwing up as a sign of the dat gay taking over.

i'm not really responding to the OP.
more so, people copping pleas for any and all stupid shit new, young rappers do so they don't come off like lord jamar.

one year 1990 cosplay rap with starter hats and acid wash jeans...
next year it's neon lime skinny jeans and mr bojangles dances over bargin bin-level production
next year it's rapping about throwing stinkbombs at old people in the mall, 666 and skateboarding
next year it's straight up out the closet rap.

"buzz", manufactured or not, has people trying to rap their heads around the view counts and justifying it's merits.

it's just a new gimmick to sell you ho-hum mediocre material.

ppl don't want to get "left behind" so they follow the trends or at least justify why they "matter" all in an effort to remain "with it".

i mean a worthless musical act is a worthless musical act regardless of whatever angle they're coming from.

dear Lord Jamar,
Choose your battles. If the whitening of rap is a concern to you, please leave my name out of it. If you think being gay is the same as being white, you are as ignorant as your enemies. I’m darker than you. I’m african. I’m a black man and I experience all the same racism you do, if not more, on top of homophobia, including from black men just like you. Are you proud of being a hateful member of a majority? Rap started out as a creative response to oppression, and no matter my outfit, I know oppressions you will never understand.
All respect,
Le1f

Even in the event that it becomes fad. It'll pass JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER FAD.
But when it comes to this particular fad, cats are super passionate about it like
they are about no other fad. It's just kilts and shit, but cats start talking about
homosexuality when homosexuality wasn't even mentioned. It, LITERALLY,
is a fear... homophobia in the truest form. "A dress?!!!?!?? Dear God, don't
it be the gayyyyyyy!!!!!!" Smh.

Furthermore, ok, so a rapper wears a dress... and? Mufuckas act like everybody's gonna
rock that style and turn homosexual. Even if 5 rappers wear dresses, so what?
Why is that a big deal?
White cats do stuff like this and it's just whatever... nobody says "THEY TRYNA
MARKET THE GAY TO US SUBURBANITES!" I understand historical context
and all, but we are our own prison with this kind of shit. I will be fucking glad
when dresses and gays and whatever else, no longer get the side eye and
black people can be free like everybody else without being judged by other
black people who fear that we'll all turn into flaming homos via some fucking garments.

like a week after his combat jack interview that boy pussy song/rapper came out
lol
it is what it is
personally i don't really want to be knocking gay hip hop and so i won't
but if they create a market and get money....then do what it do
it's obvious that an element of this stuff is going influence young listeners (if those listeners seek it out, that remains to be seen i guess)

That's all there is to it. You don't have to listen if you don't relate.
That's pretty much any rap you don't like tho.

What do you mean by this? You mean young people are gonna be influenced
to partake of boy pussy? What are you saying?

who just happen to be gay
lord jamar countered that that's how it would begin
but that once the door is open there would be raps about deep throating dicks and all of that
ppl said that was foolishness.....and then it happened
whether u think that's an issue or not is another argument i guess

The boy P*ssy song is NOT the first graphic gay rap song though?

He does not even claim to be straight..

it'll never get played in a "regular" club..

So none of that shit he said is true...

He said dudes would be singning along to a song about sucking dick in the regular club...

that shit aint happen.. nor will it.. Closest you will get is Imma Read type of record.

as for Young Thug.. Stoner and Danny Glover are also not closeted or overtly gay songs.. It doesn't matter what he does off the record the shit aint happen..

He is afraid of an imaginary gay boogie man.. that will ooze out through clothing.. that shit is stupid
