"Poll question: Best vinyl side of Songs in the Key of Life?"
It's one of those albums that I wish I was there to listen to it brand new. Sometimes I like to wonder which vinyl side I would have just let run over and over again before I got my ass up to flip the thing. No an easy choice. Here's the tracklisting for each side of this monster album:
Side A A1 Love's In Need Of Love Today 7:05
A2 Have A Talk With God 2:42
A3 Village Ghetto Land 3:25
A4 Contusion 3:45
A5 Sir Duke 3:52
Side B B1 I Wish 4:12
B2 Knocks Me Off My Feet 3:35
B3 Pastime Paradise 3:20
B4 Summer Soft 4:16
B5 Ordinary Pain 6:22
Side C C1 Isn't She Lovely 6:33
C2 Joy Inside My Tears 6:29
C3 Black Man 8:29
Side D D1 Ngiculela - Es Una Historia - I Am Singing 3:48

those first two songs ain't as strong as "As" and "another Star" by far. Even though it should be a favourite, to me Side B looks like the dark horse here. If anyone today released side B as an EP people would be calling them a genius. It really touches on a multitude of styles in those five songs.
Side C with Isn't she lovely and "Black man" have to be reckoned with as well.

3. "side b is the most listenable, and has the most classics. " In response to Reply # 0 Fri Mar-21-14 10:19 AM by Joe Corn Mo
side a is jarring, skipping around from pastoral harmonies on "loves in need" to a weird funk groove on "talk w/ god" to a string quartet on "ghetto land" to jazz fusion on "contusion" to big band on "sir duke."
it's my second favorite side, but it's not an easy listen.
side d is out because i am never in the mood for "if it's magic" and "as" goes on for several minutes to long. by the time he's at the cookie monster voice, i have forgotten why i like the record.
side c is only 3 songs, all of which might be too long, neither of which are as cool as the material on side b.
if i pull out SITKOL, and i only listen to one side, it's usually b or a. and although i always had a soft spot for a, b has more classics, so the correct answer is b.

I like the breakdown on "As" as well, but as Joe said above, I wonder if n an average if side B is the best because it has five solid sogs, even if they ain't as wild as "Anther Star".
