"Pharohe Monch - PTSD"

It's not out there (that I know of), but I know a lot of you guys probably have heard the press advance. What you guys think? I think it's much better than WAR and I've been playing it quite a bit (especially since I can only play it on my laptop).

I didnt like WAR all that much when it came out. I've tried to re-visit it again since listening to the new record, but it's only made me want to keep listening to PTSD.

conceptually, I would say it deals with some pretty heavy and darker subject matter. I wouldn't say the production is overly dark though. But he talks a lot about mental health issues, which I think is an important topic that hip hop doesn't cover a lot of. And he does it cleverly enough that doesn't come off as a concerted effort to talk about a hot button topic.

They both spaz on it. The two main battle rap tracks are perfectly placed in a pretty concept-driven, sort of dark album.

One of the only "top tier" rappers I would even consider checking for at this point.

Curious about this. He's one of the only MCs I would buy something w/o even hearing it.

I liked the last one….sounded slightly "dated" (OKP buzzword of the month….LOL) but almost in a good way.

I'm still a big fan of his 1st solo album and each album after that hasn't come close but with that said his 2nd & 3rd albums are solid, not dope but solid and still better than a lot of other rapper's albums.

I can't wait to hear this new one but I'm not going to compare it to "Internal Affairs" cause it's not going to be on that level; but I'm hoping it's better than his last one though.

in a long time

I'm a fan of Internal Affairs, haven't revisited in a while, but it's a strong quality release. (99)

I was so hype for Desire off "What It Is" being vintage conceptual Monch rippin shit, and that album was so lack luster. I've tried three different times to get into it, but I lose interest and yes it's the beats. (07)

four years later WAR was even worse (11)

and now it seems like the same team that made WAR made PTSD

also some times I feel Monch tries to be so deep/conceptual when I selfishly just want him to rap his ass off for showing off sake

Internal Affairs is cool but I never loved it.

Desire had some suspect shit on it.

WAR was dope but it still was just ok because he could and should be making classics.

I think that he is just great at MCing but lacks when it comes to constructing an album.

The Marco Polo production on this one has me interested especially the one with Thought.

I liked Desire a lot, but that was my first Monch album. WAR was good, not great. But I think this album is his best out of the 3. I think he definitely puts together a good focused album. There are a few tracks dedicated to him just spitting slick shit (that track with Black Thought being one), but I think this album is well constructed and loosely conceptual.

Maybe Monch coud benefit from somebody helping him sculpt a new sound for an album. That said, the OP wasn't a WAR fan and seems to think think album is better so maybe we're in for a surprise.

Monch needs that hard hitting sound tempered with soul.

And, PLEASE, no one say he should do an entire album with Marco Polo. Polo hits one out the park every now and again, but, his stuff is VERY hit or miss.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

He is much more hit in my opinion. Maybe not every beat is an absolute classic but he doesn't make anything that is suspect by any means.

That said, I wouldn't pick him to do a whole Monch album because Monch is a bit more versatile than what Marco has proven himself to be at this point.

But, listen to this track, which I'm sure you've heard:

https://soundcloud.com/marcopolobeatspa/marco-polo-f-organized-konfusion-3-o-clock

And tell me WHY would someone place a bassline in a track that is so busy and mixed so high that it feels like it's fighting with the vocals. I can barely concentrate on what OK is saying.

And this is just one example. Now, don't get me wrong, in no way is Marco Polo "wack", but, his beats many times are just "there". Nothing I would be searching down the instrumental for or keeping on repeat. He's functional. BUT, sometimes he DOES knock it out the park. His inconsistency is what bothers me the most.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

I want the MC to do a full album with Jake One.

It's like my stock answer.

Lupe...Jake One

Monch...Jake One

I feel like these super MC type of dudes that have production issues would benefit from his focus on the project.

That's def the move he should make. Him producing his own material and working with Lee Stone ain't cuttin it. The only track I loved off his last album was produced by Exile.

That sh!t would be incredible, and perfect for Monch.

I like the Black Milk idea...

JakeOne would be an okay look but I'm never blown away by him.

Quelle Chris would be an interesting way to go.

L'Orange too.

Only reason I wouldn't say El-P is because the album would be too dark.

Monch is great on the soulful shit when he is focused which is why I would prefer a more versatile producer like Jake One or Black Milk.

The thing I love about Jake One is how open he keeps his drums which is perfect for a technical MC like Monch.

still no Internal Affairs, which I absolutely consider a classic... but a really good album...

Real curious though why he hasn't went back to Alchemist after Desire, and where Black Milk is on this album

Georgia had her time when she was killing it, but, almost everything has been lackluster since.

She has put out some bangers though, so, if she can stay focused, it might work.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

I've played this thing through a few times and it's definitely legit.

He sticks to the concept lovely.

The album flows nicely.

The production wasn't my favorite at first but the few joints that were questionable grew on me.

But yeah, not sure why he has that last track on there. Isn't that the same damn song as he used on the last album?

All in all I am really feeling the album and it may be his best. I need more time to sit with it. Dude is a beast on the mic.

Thought kills his guest spot. Kweli came wack as shit with his verse though. It seems like his voice and delivery have gotten more an more annoying over the years.

For everyone questioning if Marco shouldnt do a whole album...I would say that based off of this album the answer is YES.

His joints are the best on here and fit Monch's style perfectly.

Here's the problem with you discussing music with you: you have no idea what you're talking about. Posting Youtube links isn't a substitute for actually making a point/comprehending what a song is about. You've shown multiple times that you can't follow relatively straight-forward songs. You actually thought "Swimming Pools" was a pro-drinking song.

As a result of this perpetual confusion, you're just cheerleading whatever artist a label or publicist has labeled "conscious." I'm really sure how that makes you different from somebody who needs Pitchfork to tell them what bands/rappers to like but Im also not sure why you post links to well-known songs every single day.

I can see what kind of production he was going for here, as well as in WAR (hard hitting/live band feel). It works for the most part but sometimes it just doesn't match his style imo. The last 3rd of the album kind of dragged on for me. Sorry but that D.R.E.A.M track was kind of corny. His performance on the mic can't be questioned though.

This album is dope.

Monch does a great job sticking to the concept without shoving it down our throats.

He's rapping his ass off on here as well.

Not a song I skip at this point.

My only complaint, and it really doesn't have to do with this album but; I wish Monch would do an album along the lines of that joint Get Down that he just released.

He sounds dope over that production style.

That's why I don't want him over all El-P production like everyone else. Not that I wouldn't love that as well but that would fit an album like PTSD and I would love to hear him over some Jake One who bring a more soulful/lighter sound.

Gotta be one of my favorite releases this year. I liked it better than Schoolboy Q's album, that's for sure. I am not sure if I like it more than WAR, but they might be tied for how much I each album.

The Marco Polo production is awesome, and the narrative/story of the album is pretty neat.
