ra epmd pe
if you call ra the greatest lyricist of all time…you probably in agreement with the majority. he revolutionized MCing. he's from wyandanch. right down straight path from where i grew up in north babylon…where LL and Freddie Foxx were from.
i'd see De La in PJs barbershop (PJ the barber was a pimp…drove an excalibur lol)
If you called them, epmd, or de la greatest group of all time. no one would give you the side eye
if you said de la is the ultimate trendsetter in hip hop you'd have alotta ammo in your bag
if you said erick sermon brought the funk in hip hop… you'd be RIGHT! lol
if you said it takes a nations of millions was GOAT album…people who knew wouldn't bat an eye. if you said bomb squad was most creative ever hip hop production… you get the point
thats just long island
mount vernon…new rochelle also had major talent.
if you said pete rock….
yeah…i'm saying
the greatest hip hop groups actually came from NYC suburbs
**as far as the wu… yeah staten island is a borough…but its different. and meth was from hempstead
so my point is… the bronx is hip hops heart. but the suburbs and LI in particular is the soul. or maybe thats backwards lol

ATL....the majority of the legends and even one hit wonders rarely come from THE city itself....but NYC always felt different to me, since the city of NY is extremely huge compared to ATL, or compared to L.A. only being 10-12% Black within the city.
But at the same time, I guess for L.A. and ATL, it's not the "suburbs" to us, when we speak of Compton and Inglewood, or Decatur, College Park, etc. even if they technically are suburbs of the main city.
So...how did NYC end up preventing rappers from LI and other burbs from making it?

3. "where did you grow up on long island?" In response to Reply # 0 Wed Mar-05-14 05:46 PM by rhymesandammo
i was born in manhattan, but spent most of my formative years (5-19) on long island in east williston and roslyn. moved from queens to hicksville about a year and a half ago and have been recording music with one of the cats i grew up with: http://blahzemisfits.bandcamp.com
long island has a rich hip hop history that basically gets brushed over for w/e reason. roc marciano always shouts out pimpstead (hempstead) but that's really it. he's the last person from here that got some exposure and he's been around for a minute.
asap rocky lives in the suburbs of new jersey right now but he reps harlem and didnt make that move until around the time he got signed. i don't think it's en vogue to say you're from the suburbs in rap, even though some of the biggest rap artists right now (drake, macklemore) grew up in the burbs.
isn't busta from long island? i know he spent most of his teen years in brooklyn but im pretty sure he was born on the island.
okay now i'm rambling. out.

....about Heavy D, Pete Rock & CL, Puba and Brand Nubian being just a few towns over ...People always think of NY hip hop as being very Bronx or Queens heavy, but LI and Westchester are probably greater than any other areas in the world when it comes to hip hop
GOAT MC = RAKIM GOAT Producer = PETE ROCK GOAT Group = DE LA

I kinda feel you though
Suburb kids had more resources, time, to make the dream or rapping really happen
Best Dj's were from the suburbs too
Don't know how many of the Supermen and the X-Men were from the suburbs vs. the boroughs, but I would assume a lot of well known NYC DJ's were from the suburbs too
