for the OP but I think he was referring more to the lyrical content than the sonic landscape, at least with regard to SHI...which he's right about. Pos rapped like someone stole his lunch.
Ex.: "Cause the gun made a man outta PUSSIES from around my way who usually wouldn't have a FUCKIN thing to say"

Illadelph is one of the best albums that I go back to the least. There's nothing wrong with it, but I feel like it's their most robotic work. ?uestlove made his drums sound like they were programmed, BT raps like a metronome, and the whole thing just lulls me to sleep. It's perfectly executed, which might have been the problem. I prefer the more spontaneous Roots...Phrenology even...where they actually sound like a band playing in a room.

I was never a fan of "Stakes Is High", it's okay but got so many songs that feel skip-able, the album felt dated the day it came out to me; but "Illadelph Halflife" stayed on heavy rotation for three years for me until I just had to make myself pace the times I listen to it and I still listen to it at least once every couple of months from beginning to end.

both albums are lyrical clinics, I don't think there's a doubt about that, and you'd be hard pressed to find twenty-somethings today that could pull off what they did on both these albums oh, and in case you guys didn't notice, "turning coins to get the upper cut like Sonny Liston/but eyes closed episodes bring you back to zeroes" is best line off both LPs
