"imcvspl's Deep Thoughts: Music is inherently a response"

Music is inherently a response to something that exists out in the world. When that which music is in response to limits itself solely to the artists perception (or perceived perception) is the text book definition of musical masturbation.

Within this context at what point did hip-hop become the purest form of musical masturbation?

Could it not be said that the greatest achievements of hip-hop occur when the artists don't fall into the trap that is musical masturbation? Or are there enough purely masterbatory hip-hop classics to challenge the notion that musical masturbation is a bad thing for music.

Tangential argument:

The musical masturbation of the bop into hard bop era coming out of a jazz tradition which had so carefully played to broader perspectives and received its acclaim to almost be regarded as popular, have caused the biggest rejection of perceived musical masturbation by the public at large?
