"You're The First, My Last, My Everything" - Barry White
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtwOeoeWhoo

(since he's the first guest on The Tonight Show)

U2:
"I'll Go Crazy If I Don''t Go Crazy Tonight" - U2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q_AHAMVQ9c

(It's a U2 song, it has the word Tonight in it, they're appearing on the Tonight show)

Will Smith
Sweet's "Little Willy"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z13a4uky600
REASON: Name recognition. Also, I can't beat Cool C's "Glamorous Life" so I'll shoot for that song.

U2
U2's "Out Of Control"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4u83iwMTpU
REASON: This song was one of the first songs they released 35 years ago, which would later go on their BOY album. You may go for the song on THE JOSHUA TREE you listened to when stopped by the cops (per your book), but I'll stick with this.

Will Smith - "Switch" by Will
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzUozo1628U&feature=kp

Since y'all just made the switch to the TONIGHT SHOW

U2 - "Tonight" by U2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm6ETYl6sWA

From their '78 demo. Again, as a nod to being the premiere of the new TONIGHT SHOW.

Will Smith

Paul Shaffer - When The Radio Is On
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X19QJCys6Wo

Why? You played it for Paul, play it for Will.

-or-

Boom! Shake the Room - DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfHtiCVA5d8

Why? My suggestion for a song that middle America may remember *and is still cool). And since he's the first guest the crowd is going to be EXTRA hype. Tick Tick Tick Boom.
-
My suggestion for the first song if you got with a first/number one themes:

Boogie Down Productions - I'm Still No.1 (Numero Uno Re-Recording)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gZ6tLhUAHY

Why? He's the #1 guest. (Not to mention he might say he's STILL #1 box office star.)

More:
The Rutles - Number One
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLrKu0WTqEg

Number One feat. Kanye West - Pharrell & The Yessirs
(No link available)

And in any case add a Public Enemy #1 - ONE-ONE-ONE- who-HA!:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u92k48bG8d4&t=88

--------
U2 (If they're on the couch)

U2 - Negativeland
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6gPSSYxex0

Why? You know why they Still Haven't Found What They're Looking For? Because the Streets Have No Name. Navigate using landmarks fellas!

Jerry sings a bit of it in the SEINFELD episode, "The Opera"

Kristen Wiig - "The Perfect Number" by Vicki St Elmo (Wiig in Macgruber)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhRHaCNVplk

It's the Wiig song from the MACGRUBER soundtrack that she sang.

Bradley Cooper
The Oceans' "Super Snooper"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qde8lJ_h99E
REASON: This is the theme to the basic cable classic SUPER FUZZ. The chorus is very basic:
"he's a super snooper
really super trooper
a wonder cop, a one like you never saw

he's a super snooper
really super trooper
a wonder cop out on the side of the law"

Just sing "Super Cooper" instead of "Super Snooper". The song was written by Carmelo & Michelangelo La Bionda and Timothy Touchton.

You might be familiar with the La Bionda brothers for "I Wanna Be Your Lover", not the Prince song but still quite good:

For the intro. Since Cooper is dating Suki Waterhouse... you could sing a lil "aw Suki Suki now..." http://www.justjared.com/2014/02/15/bradley-cooper-suki-waterhouse-pre-baftas-party-pair/

Man, it sucks the BEATLES are on the no list, because "Rocky Raccoon" changed to "Rocket Raccoon" would be an awesome nod to him voicing the character in GUARDIANS.

perfect time for the Roots to show hometown Philly love

If by some chance you haven't yet seen Silver Lining's Playbook, Bradley Cooper plays a huge Eagles fan in an Eagles-fanatic family, and a major plot point occurs when he gets dragged into a fight at an Eagles game

so, if i wasn't already captain obvious with the explanations, i'm now going to give a band of Eagles fans reference to Fly Eagles Fly:

Michelle Obama
Freddie Jackson's "You Are My Lady"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyjAOelCPtQ
REASON: No explanation needed. I also thought of Ray, Goodman & Brown's "Special Lady" but must do one for ol' Freddie.

Will Ferrell
Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting For The Man"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOmZimH00oo&feature=kp
REASON: Since Mrs. Obama had a song about being the "lady", I figured Ferrell would be "the man" so...

"He's never early, he's always late
First thing you learn is you always gotta wait
I'm waiting for my man"

In the song, "my man"/"the man" is a reference to Lou Reed's drug dealer, so just make a slight change and say "I'm waiting for the man".

OR...
Since there may be discussion about him doing a drum battle with Chad Smith, go for this:
Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Fela's Cock"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bn2byeySto4

This was a B-side during the BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK session and is an instrumental.

24. "my pick (JT)"
In response to Reply # 5

Bob Dylan's "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again"
https://vimeo.com/25499686

REASON: Honoring JT's Memphis roots. As you know from some of the songs I suggested for LATE NIGHT, I like to focus on a guest's childhood/upbringing from time to time, and while there are countless songs relating to Memphis, I'll try for this. It's Dylan, and a lot of people will go "OOH, DYLAN!!!:
"Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis blues again"

It's my way of saying Timberlake is away from home and while he is handling his business, he may get a bit of "Memphis blues".

ALTERNATE PICK:
Arrested Development's "Tennessee"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDcyFOZYQWA
REASON: Specifically, Dionne Farris' "take me home" passage at the end. I always liked how this and the SNL version ended, which they would later use for "Revolution" for the MALCOLM X soundtrack. Again, "Tennessee" is a reference to home for Timberlake.

46. "Tips for newbies"
In response to Reply # 0

New to the game? Here are some tips:

1)Read the list of music already played for the guest.
https://sites.google.com/site/therootswalkon/sortable-list

2)Some guest's music is "retired" so refer to #1.
If you suggest Return of The Mack for Anthony Mackie you'll not get credit, unless you suggest a new way to "flip it" or re-arrange it. Repeats do not count on my list unless you make a great case for it.

3)Read ?uestlove's "NO!" list on his signature.
If it's on the NO! list it only has a %0.01 of being played.

3)You must link to a sample of the song (if possible.)
Link to the song on Youtube, or Vimeo, or Rdio, or Amazon snippets, or iTunes if at all possible.

5)The pick has to be related to the guest *somehow.*
a)Is the guest associated with the song from a TV show or movie? Example: Magnum PI Theme is good for Tom Seleck, the Theme To Gilligan's Island is likely not a good choice.

b)Was the song written about the guest?
Example: "Cherchez La Femme" by Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band is a good choice for Tommy Mattola, the Theme To Gilligan's Island is likely not a good choice.

Other scenarios around this: Was the guest in the video for the song? Did they sing it on a talk show? Did their mom name them after the song writer, or after someone in the song? Did they mention it is their favorite song? Did a relative write it? Was it sung by their spouse?

5)Can the song be applied to the guest or to the project they are promoting this week?
Example: "911 is a joke" was played for a guest who's new movie concerns an aborted 911 call.

6)Funny is almost always better.

7)Rhymes work.
Example: "Do the Hustle" turns into "Do the Russell." for Keri Russell. Or turn "Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto" into "Domo Arigato, Demi Lovato."

8)Snarky is good - but be careful what you ask for.
Example: I won't even mention it.

10)The earlier the better
?uest has stated that the early bird gets the worm.

Just be creative and back up your choices with some sort of rationale. I think The Roots play a song suggested here about 25% of the time.

And don't get disappointed if your choice isn't played, even if you can make a case that what you suggested was better. Who knows hwy they pick what the pick? I've gone weeks without a suggestion being played.

Good luck, and welcome aboard.

I thought it was just "list related songs for us to play when the guest walks out." So, has anyone won a prize?

We've done it for 5 years now.

The prize is just the fun of seenig the "perfect" song played.

(Except for that one year where we got actual prizes.)

FOH!

they couldn't do something techy to incoporate the skyline into the photo background

and now when the band is on camera it looks like they're in a hallway

Please change that ish ASAP!

otherwise, I was thoroughly entertained

CONGRATS! (again)

http://media.philly.com/images/021814_jimmy_fallon_tonight_show_600.jpg

and then it's surrounded by more wood

the desk, inset, etc...

IDK, looks really odd IMO

I would think incoporating the models into the picture itself would look better

and maybe not detailing the rest of the set with the same wood

its a step or 2 from being the wood paneling basements of the 70s

what's netx, carpet on the walls?
