just wondering what the consensus is....are there any producers out now that have emulated or even expounded upon Dilla's production? would like to hear some. give me some names to check out.

Agreed.

Dilla and Madlib are the summit.

I can't believe whats going on with Dills the estate though. Sure its great to hear whats on the sunset instrumentals, but the project itself is forced. Just release:

*the beat tape collections as he made them
*a collection of rough vocals & drafts from different eras
*Pay Jay LP as he left it
*misc. unreleased tracks that they found.

...and put an end to the fuckery.

^ agreed, how dope with a 2xLP another batch be? with some geeky linear notes about the other heads who received the tape and joints they passed on or demos that never surfaced, then bonus disc with the vocaled songs from beats off it (De La Thru Ya City, those x2 chino joints etc).

somethings telling me if it was that easy it would have been done by now, licensing; estate issues etc..No one knows the full story but its obvious that Arty Erk character was a spanner in the works for some years. (http://beatvizionblog.wordpress.com/2008/07/26/is-arthur-erk-the-devil-is-he-disrespecting-j-dillas-family/)

I heard that Lost Scrolls documentary the day from Snap Judgement (http://snapjudgment.org/j-dilla%E2%80%99s-lost-scrolls) Apparently 'some label' called the guy who copped dillas stoarge unit claiming ownership of the contents so the whole thing is probably messy.

As a hardcore Dilla (f)(st)an at this point (perhaps selfishly) I don't really want to hear any forced collabs from 6 degrees of seperation or A listers who missed the boat. Like Mike Check said, I'd rather hear solo pieces or beat tapes.

But then is that what Dilla would have wanted as a perfectionist? peeps salivating/raiding his personal vaults for stuff that was in progress or personal one takes/two tracks of ideas..

But to answer the question of the thread...I'd have said Black Milk personally, his skills have lept album to album and more recently his emceeing level has rocketed..doubt they'll ever be a true heir though given his abilities.

technology has pretty much rendered that line of thinking obsolete because you have so many people doing so many things at one time with an outlet to exposure, there's no such thing anymore for the most part

Just mentioned this in another thread this week. While he doesn't necessarily sport the same exact sound these days, he definitely seems like an evolution from that...and by expanding on the sound, he truly embodies the spirit of Dilla.

lets not forget tho, Dilla also liked to "take it back" (while still being progressive) for example Ruff Draft and, to an extent, the more "pure" sampling ethic repp'd on Donuts

The Foreign Exchange's Connected LP's entire sound is essentially an ode to early Jay Dee.

Nicolay can do a variety of sounds, but early on he was heavily influenced by Dilla.

To me J-Dilla had so many different styles that not one person has came close to doing all the different vibes and zones he was in; but there is two that I feel covered them well if you put both of their catalogs together, and those two people are Black Milk & Flying Lotus.

I was thinking about Madlib but for some reason he was kind of influenced by J-Dilla as much as Madlib influenced J-Dilla later on in both of their careers but had their own sound early before becoming well known.

Also Dj Spinna has came close to the early or mid sound of J-Dilla but to me Spinna has been making beats just as long as J-Dilla has and will continue to make great material.

So Madlib & Dj Spinna are more like on the same lines as producers but as far as an heir to J-Dilla's throne & being directly influenced by J-Dilla, I have to stick with Black Milk & Flying Lotus.

But UTQC was scaled back and took me to a place
I thought Dilla might have gone to for an entire album
if he were alive.

I always listen to new music by artists who are influenced
by Dilla and then try to imagine what Dilla might be doing
today.

Anybody ever wonder what equipment Dilla might be messing with now?

Would he still be strictly hardware?

Think he'd fuck with a MASCHINE 2.0?
REASON?
ABLETON?

I think Black Milk is the closest we've got to Dilla though.
He's doing his thing.

His shit is pretty sweet though - very easy on the ears. His singing style, his ad-libs, the drum/bass interaction….everything sounds like Jay Dee. He's starting to come into his own a bit these days, but I don't think the influence will ever go away.

...that I've heard in years, all his beats sound like early J-Dilla beats, with the simple 2 bar beats.

"Beatstrumentals": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=840de2rB-h0

"Ships": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mspd2BT0oRw

"Natural Selection (B-Side)": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxOzUAMZFfQ

"Green Parrallel (beat tape)": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YucCRQBmuY

"Astro.s.e.c.k.s": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20ZW5Mc2ebE

It's no way in hell you can't tell me this Wuntwo don't sound like J-Dilla on production.

This kid (Al Dali) is insane. He's the Your Old Droog to Jay Dee's Nas, got it all from the sub bass, punchy snares and tape hiss.

Similar to how wun two has taken the ball to one of Dilla's styles and ran with it

I'm slightly torn about the blatant emulation, but he definitely has the "vibe" of Ummah-era Jay Dee down pat. And it's a sound that is undeniably pleasing to my ear, so his soundcloud page has gotten plenty of plays from me.

I got a couple of his songs in my "Beats and Vibes" playlist on Spotify but they don't have that Dilla vibe to them. I knew that name looked somewhat familiar.

His stuff doesn't make me think of him being a biter but more as influenced. I personally don't feel he sounds exactly like one of Dilla's styles but that his sound is in line with all of Dilla's children in regards to cats who make beat instrumental albums.

...they should get props for having an almost identical "sound". Madlib and Dilla were also 2 sides of the same coin imo. Flying Lotus & Alchemist are coming for the "title" too...plus at this point, Black Milk has finally moved out of Dilla's shadow and is bringing very innovative stuff to the table.

I think being around J-Dilla he had to make some dope shit without biting J-Dilla, you can't beat or get one up on another producer if all you do is try to copy that person, you got create your own lane and I think that's what Waajeed has done for mad years; the BPM beat cd and the PPP albums don't sound like something J-Dilla would do (a few beats come close but even those got Waajeed's vibe to them).

Now there are various producers that Dilla has "begat" (to use Biblical jargon), but I don't think anyone currently has taken his "throne". If anything all the aforementioned producers have picked up where he left off.

What will happen, however, is that someone is going to innovate to a level even higher than Mr Yancey. And I don't think any of us can even fathom what next level is.

someone always comes along and adds to what came before them; it's not about being better, it's just a natural continuation of things
but the problem is that the Dilla lovers won't let it happen because of how they feel about him, there's signs of that now as well

There's more to carrying the torch then copying a sound. It's about who learned from dilla (directly) and carrying on his gospel. Flylo has definitely learned a lot about drums from copying dillas sound, but there's more to understand and more to the legacy then that. Riggins was the student, dilla was the teacher. Go listen to The Clapper on welcome to Detroit.

I respect the hell out of his work ethic and he seems like he has the same mentality as the Madlib/Dilla/Pete Rock/James Brown lineage, but the actual output is just more miss than hit for me. The wonkiness is just too hard to stomach, personally...

Maybe I'll get it one day. I will keep coming back at the chance that I do.
