For more than 15 years, Los Angeles hip-hop label Stones Throw has been one of the most vital independent labels in music. Founded by DJ/producer Peanut Butter Wolf, the label is responsible for releasing groundbreaking albums by J Dilla, Madlib and Madvillain — the collaboration between Madlib and MF Doom — alongside compilations of rare, overlooked funk, soul and hip-hop tracks.

Q&A: Madlib on the Return of Quasimoto

The label recently celebrated their legacy with Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton, a new documentary juxtaposing rare concert footage, archival material and interviews with both the label's roster and those influenced by its catalog, including Kanye West, Mike D, Questlove and Tyler, The Creator.

While the DVD/Blu-ray is available for purchase on the label's website, check out nearly 30 minutes of extra footage that didn't make the final cut exclusively on Rolling Stone above. In Extra Special Loving for the People, producer and director Jeff Broadway culls never-before-seen production outtakes with archival and concert footage. Madlib discusses the necessity of earthquake kits. The Gaslamp Killer delivers an expletive-filled story about walking off the stage while opening for Doom. And in the most revealing segment, Kanye West shares his admiration for J Dilla and how the deceased producer's sound still permeates his own.

"It’s amazing: How could we lose Biggie, Pac, Dilla, Steve Jobs, Michael Jackson? It almost feels like the Devil’s winning," West says. "We gotta make music and think, 'If Dilla was alive, would he like this?' I have to work on behalf of Dilla. When I put a weird-ass Jamaican sample, it works at first but it’s not until I put the that it sounds like art or sounds slightly wrong. And now it’ll go to the radio now that it’s wrong, motherfucker. Now play this. Play this 5-minute song that completely fucks up your programming. The best respect that we can pay to great artists that have inspired us so much is to never sell out."

skipped around, but what's quoted above seems to be all that was from 'Ye. the rest is ST miscellany: I caught Oh No playing a racing game, Mayer Hawthorne djing, footage of Madlib mentioning his favorite producers (I remember this clip from a Lootpack *VHS* tape that I copped back in the day!), and Dilla on stage doing F*ck The Police.

I damn near felt I've grown up with this label. literally new all the artist and transitions

i'm glad they were honest about the post-Dilla, light Madlib years.

the Charlie Wilson, Baron Zen, Folerio days while funny, were also strange

its crazy they are still around. when they did the DVD release party in Highland park, it's obvious us oldies still support, but they had a huge crop of youngsters (male and female) that were down for the next gen of the label

also I wonder why Aloe didn't choose to get interviewed. Shine Throw is TOP 5 in the ST catalogue

If I'm not mistaken Aloe got 2 albums rejected by ST before the soul album dropped.

Then even in the doc PBW makes it seem like Aloe's record wasn't really dope and it's just lucky it blew.

i would've loved to see some content on rasco, but the story still seemed full to me.

amazing to think of all the great talents that have come out/thru this really small label: charizma, madlib, dilla, mayer, aloe, etc.

and i've always loved how wolf just simply puts out what he wants, from legends like percee p, to his friends' shit,...and even folerio, haha.

I think I've watched it twice from beginning to end, the other times I it came on when I had to go somewhere so I couldn't see the whole thing but Revolt was showing a ton of documentaries during the winter holidays and probably do it again this spring when school it out.
