"The 2014 Asian Music Post."

I'll post stuff I like that I hope you like.

The more contributors the better so that this doesn't just get dictated by just my taste.

Also, a shameless plug for my internet radio show at the University of Illinois where I thrown in Japanese stuff into my sets.

I suck but the music doesn't: http://spinitron.com/radio/playlist.php?station=pizzafm&showid=189

But in terms of a hard copy, you'll most likely have to use something like CDJapan or YesAsia to get it, and it's fairly expensive. Unless you absolutely need a physical copy, I'd recommend taking advantage of the fact that these artists are distributing it through channels like iTunes or Amazon.com digitally.

A lot of people say it sounds a little same-y, and I can see where they're coming from, but I think it's a great record that has some great songwriting and distinct touches on each song that reveal themselves with more listens.

I also love the EP by Kinoko Teikoku that came out in December. They're one of those rare bands that's actually getting better and better with time, and I can't wait to hear what they have next.

In response to Reply # 10

due to "creative differences."

It'll just be the three founding members after the 27th of March, and they'll have a touring drummer for their Asian tour.

komaki is a beast drummer, so this definitely sucks. I wonder if they'll get a permanent drummer or do what Phoenix did and just bring one along for tours. If they do get one, I'm guessing it'll be a woman, however.

My exchange-student-homey's from Japan brought a cassette to the states a few years back of a gloriously melodic Japanese punk band with a female vocalist....

Ill harmonies, lo-fi rugged guitar mix.....but I can't remember the name of the band for the life of me....but I know that I NEED that band in my life.

I just ask that Kats in this post name-off some melodic Japanese punk bands with female vocalists so that I can possibly rekindle with the greatness of this band that I've since lost about 7 years ago.....

Help....

wakusei abnormal:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhaZVsM7WTs

there are better songs on the two albums released in 2013, both have haymakers for closing tracks that will completely have ur eyeballs rolling backwards into ur socket but can't find on youtube

Yasuha Kominami

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV_IS_Y866g

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0E6V4pRcC8

and my favorite
Seiko Oomori

what she normally does, probably won't like it at first or get used to her voice but then it will grow on you to love it,:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0E6V4pRcC8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCutuV7eBjE

what she don't normally do but still great
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0E6V4pRcC8

and can rock with a live band:

I'm not a huge fan of the first two acts yet (they sound like a poor man's Ringo), but I absolutely love Seiko Oomori. I posted about her in last year's Japanese music thread but wasn't sure if anyone was checking for her. I have her disk, 黒歴史再録, and her "in the room" skit things are absolutely hilarious. She's a fucking weirdo, and I love it.

im a fan of all three, i can see the potential of both establishing their own sound and taking it to the level of shiina like non constraint on their music, and have some songs in their catalogue already that does that
check out the two last tracks on wakusei abnormals albums

but seiko is more like psycho oomori amirite? lol
she is like the new girl that won't let me talk to my ex girls (wakusei abnormal, and yasuha kominami) even though im on good terms with them lol... she demands all my attention, shes crazy,
ever since i found out about her i havent paid attention to anything else

i had a bad first impression though
first song i ever heard was from the 魔法が使えないなら死にたい (Mahou Ga Tsukenai Nara Shinatai - translated You Will Die If you Don't Use Magic)which is Kitty Blues, shit threw me the fuck off like why people saying she could be the next shiina ringo, im like where the drums and electric at? she sounded like a five year old with her annoying singing voice, but then i doubled back on the whole album a few weeks later due to giving the benefit of doubt to one of my trusted music taste person i know who is a bigger stan than i am, can't remember the last album that had such a tremendous payoff as a grower like this one, i don't think many people just like me would get it after first listen
a month later it became one of my favorite albums ever
she does whatever the fuck she wants but knows how to strike every chord in me, her songs sound so personal like we are walking in on her in her private moments, geez

but anyways if ur a big fan, download the Over The Party concert dvd
on jpopsuki, inbox me if u need a jpopsuki invite

Haha, I'm on JPS, and I've had the Over the Party .iso sitting on my computer but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

DG on JPS is totally killing it with all the Seiko uploads. I also posted about The Nanbatatain and their lead single in this tread, and the lyrics were written by Seiko.

I think what separates Seiko from the other acts is that while she has elements that make her appeal to Ringo fans, I don't think she actually sounds very Ringo-ish herself, and that's why I really like her. I had a similar reaction to her at first, however. I heard the first album and kind of just forgot about it, but when I heard the collaboration with Lai Lai Lai Team, I went back to check out 魔法が使えないなら死にたい, and it finally clicked.

And I love every single version of the track, ミッドナイト清純異性交遊, with the Lai Lai Lai Team version you posted as my favorite. But I also really love this acoustic rendition, and I hope this ends up on some kind of CD or DVD/BD release: http://youtu.be/smEhVWqJsXM

but prob the one on the Mahou album caus its the best rap song since 93 til infinity

im Loving the track Hayatori on her new album
which is still growing on me but not as much as the first one did

or that we're not talking enough about Korean stuff since it's what's hot?

If it's the latter, I usually can't keep up with Korean stuff since there's so much of it, and a lot of it isn't worth the time and effort. Really popular (and sometimes really good) stuff does eventually make it onto my radar, and I'll try to post it here.

In response to Reply # 0

So I've recently started buying some Japanese releases from amazon.co.jp and trying to find what projects the songs in this post and last year's come from. I've been noticing that Japanese bands release a lot of what we'd probably call EPs in the US (in terms of length). Is is pretty common for bands to do that and not have them essentially be previews for longer albums (as they tend to be stateside)?

I'm wondering about this because while the CD's themselves aren't prohibitively more expensive, the shipping is kicking my ass so I'm trying to economize.

At the same time I probably follow Japanese bands a little bit more closely because you kind of need to to stay in the loop since there are less resources for news and the like, so I'm a bit more vigilant about not missing EPs and singles.

They also release a lot of what they call "mini-albums," which are usually just like an EP or just a bit longer, and often they are standalone releases and not necessarily previews to longer albums.

If you don't mind used CDs, the Japanese rakuten site is usually good for cheap CDs, although it's not quite as useful for independent stuff. Just make sure you do a big batch order to justify the shipping. New CDs are ridiculously expensive to me, even for the cheaper sellers on Amazon.jp. And sometimes it's hard for me to figure out which ones will actually ship to the U.S.

It sucks because there are a lot of really interesting releases that I haven't been able to check out since the cost is so high, and they unfortunately aren't available digitally. I was so happy when tricot put their album on the U.S. Amazon store, and for a pretty good price as well.

In response to Reply # 86

I get the comparison to mouse on keys, but these guys are brutally mundane. No funk in their rhythms, no counterpoint in their melodies; basically just looping 2-bar blocks for minutes on end with minor variations. It's like they aspired to alter the sound of mouse on keys into a template for dramatic montages in Japanese film.

Their sound and songwriting is pretty watered down, and unfortunately the entire album is kind of like that.

Honestly just felt like posting it because I hadn't in a while.

They're releasing their sophomore album late in September. The single, "Cider," is already out, and here's a short promo video for it here: http://youtu.be/1123G-tP4l4

Zettaitekina Kankei is one of my favorite songs this year (it appears on the album), and I'm really enjoying "Cider" as well.

In response to Reply # 0

you've heard all the stuff I got into in the 90s, so anything in particular you think I'd like that's got either a minyo, shimauta or global-roots bend to it could be fun for me to check out. I used to read up on releases at farsidemusic.com but haven't spent much time there in several years... doesn't help that the album prices are so outrageous. Think I got my last shipment of J-pop stuff in 2006 or 2007, just catching up on recent (at the time) releases from The Boom and Soul Flower Union.

I'll let you know if I come across something. Rakuten used to have a shop that sold used CDs for just a dollar or two, and it was pretty useful if you placed a bulk order to ship a bunch of CDs for relatively cheap. I'm not sure how their selection would have been for the kind of stuff you're looking for, but it's a resource I wish was still around.

Best bet it seems nowadays is to try to find digital releases in U.S. stores (e.g., Amazon, iTunes), because even the digital releases are expensive in Japanese digital stores.

She's of my favorite J-Pop artists, but her work has been a bit spotty the last couple of years. This is the first song that I've really enjoyed from her the last year or so, and it's mostly because she's collaborating with Shinobu Watanabe again here (and Takashi Kashikura of the band toe is her drummer as well).
