Over in that Grammy robberies post, HIGO got absolutely no love and this was a shock to me. I remember it being fairly well received around here when it dropped, but after all these board crashes, I couldn't find the original posts about it. I remember some criticism but an overall positive consensus on it. Am I wrong?

For those who don't like HIGO -- what didn't work for you?

That means literally nothing.

Its not a **bad** album. They have never made a bad album, though Undun comes close.

Been stale since Game Theory unfortunately. Not BAD, just uninspired and for the first time in their amazing careers repeating themselves.

RD wasn't as good as GT

HIGO wasn't as good as RD

Undun isn't even close to seeing HIGO

bad trend.

I'm not trying to hear no acapella album. I have a hard enough time sitting through instrumental albums unless they're done right.

Let me start by saying Thought is number 2 on my list...

But I feel like you read the story of how the wrote the verses and then re-wrote the verse down to each line and then formed your opinion.

"Toast of the town like Thomas is" is a throw away line.

I like the album. I praised it from day one. and I could be wrong but there was one person on here that was acting as if the writing on that album was the best of all-time and I just can't fathom someone being that crazy about it unless they were trying to jump on board with that story that came out about the process.

The writing is good to great but damn...ease up a little.

The intentionally pitchfork friendly vibe didn't work for me and less Black Thought is never a good thing IMO. I haven't dug an album by The Roots since Game Theory. Of course I'll still support the fam. They always have a few cuts I love on each album.

Not terrible or anything, just safe and unmemorable, which is probably you don't see too many still raving over it. I think it was pretty well-received at the time though.

I think a lot of posters here put most of their stock into things they found memorable, or returned to for months and months.

I think it went really well with the John Legend album that year, too. HIGO was more reserved, Wake Up! more energetic.

But that opening five songs, and "The Day" / "Right On"? There's no way HIGO was a bad album.

It's a solid 5th in their discography for me, but at an 8.3/10 it's only 12 spots out of my Top 100 albums. Like I said, I wouldn't argue it had any super memorable moments individually, but I bet if I pressed play I'd immediately remember what I liked so much about the album as a whole.

At least not until way later. It's the only Roots album I didn't purchase. Maybe I copped it later on but I honestly don't even remember. Dear God 2.0 really bothered me.

Overall though it's not a bad album. Some good music on there.

Just so I'm stating my position here. I love HIGO... except for "The Fire" which I don't care much for.

This weekend I revisited the Tipping Point and Rising Down too.
Maybe next there should be a rank The Roots' album post.

Way more replay value than Undun, which while great got older faster.

and How I Get Over might be the least appealing major-label studio effor of their career (not counting side-projects like the Booker T snoozer).

But it still had it's moments, 'Right On' was cool & there might be a couple others on it, I own it but don't really remember it well at this point which speaks to its sticking power with me.

the first 3 (not Organix) can all be argued to be better tho i disagree myself except for DYWM, its hard for me to put GT over that even tho i casually consider GT my favorite Roots album

I even like Rising Down's opening salvo from its intro/title-track/GetBusy/@15/75-Bars aural assault to the entirety of Game Theory.

But definitely all the pre-Def-Jam records, even the 'wack one' I know you're referring to which admittedly is cutting it close

Game Theory along with Stakes Is High and The Grind Date to me are the three most overpraised albums in the history of this forum even though I don't actually dislike any of those albums per se.

I just can't see any being considered being consider to be either group's best work or even close.

Each record feels fairly heavy-handed/joyless to me without really saying or doing much new, interesting and/or thought-provoking either.

No thanks, I'd rather listen to Mellow My Man over the pseudo-Pollywannacracka-man on False Media.

I recognize though that it seems to mostly be just me on that end, most here would vehemently disagree & it's already been hashed over ad naseum in this forum.

but I do probably prefer it by a hair.

Love Star/Pointro, love Thought over that synthy/jiggy Storch beat of Don't Say Nothin' even if I disagree with Iovine & think they need to actually finish putting some words on that hook ironic title be damned, Stay Cool is an all-time favorite, Web is beastly, Somebody Gotta Do It is the kind of hook Dice spent the next three albums failing to duplicate & that Melting Pot/InLoveWitThaMic/DunDaDa closer/hidden-track-jam is epic.

But on the positive side I kinda wish Phonte would become a permanent member of the band or they bring Malik B back.

definitely could've done without "Hustla" too,
both John Legend tracks were just alright to me,
and STS' verse almost ruined "Right On" - which is otherwise my favorite song on the album by far

so all of the album's worst moments all being back-to-back is really what killed it for me,
the first 8 1/2 songs are my shit though -
so its not an inconsistent LP as much as it's just top-heavy.

HIGO is a strong release, IMO.

The title track should've been HUGE….in a perfect world. It's a fucking blues song essentially.

The first half of the album is pretty much flawless.

I also like Web 2.0, it's a posse cut, nothing strange there.

Seems like it's a more "normal" Roots album, but the songs are still there, Thought is on fire, what's the problem?

I also liked "Undun"….seemed a little more subdued and understated. The Roots do what they want, that's why I love them….and it almost always comes out dope.

The few times I've seen someone mention this song they were unfavorable. I LOVE that shit to death. The drum pattern and then when Thought comes in, "Unh am I still the
one..." - goosebumps man!

Just curious what those of you dislike about it. Common doesn't keep up with BT and I think dice raw's singing had something/everything to do with it.
