but it's not on the level of "slave for u" and "nasty girl" or "blurred lines" and "got to give it up"
i never quite understood ppl's problem with this. genius artists steal ideas from other people. i mean if we start copyrighting drum sounds, grooves, chord progressions, and vibes of songs... there's no more art left period.

from "give it 2 me (just wanna love u)" to "beautiful" to that song with justin, snoop, and charlie wilson...it's a key part of what he does. i dunno why folks are so shocked now.
and yea...hearing "glow" right now i can understand what fire is saying. i don't think it's as close with this one. there's more syncopation on "blow" and, in all honesty, "blow" is actually funkier.

i agree that both parts of 'Blow' sound like they include nods to Rick James' style, i disagree that either song includes a jack or interpolation of any particular Rick James song. there's nothing to be upset about, IMO. i see the song as Yonce honoring Rick's music. and as you know, all great artists borrow from and honor artists that inspired them. to me that's all this is.

>Who we laud as an innovator.....the blurred libes controversy >& other songs...side eye for pharrell
everybody that knows about music knows he copies grooves.
but where would it end?
do we chastise MJ for taking his "whoo!" from stevie? or swiping the groove for billie jean from hall and oats? or various dance shillouettes from bob fosse? or the moonwalk and the robot from b-boys?
every innovator jacks shit. every. single. one.
all the great artists are part of a continuum, all the legends are standing on the shoulders of giants. most of them would tell you that themselves.
20. "Exactly. The Yessirs highlighted all the interpolations/inspirations..." In response to Reply # 15
For the beats on In My Mind. Slave for You is clearly Prince inspired, Let's Get Blown is Slave inspired. That new song that the guy from Franz Ferdinand was fussing about is James Brown inspired. This is what Pharrell does. I thought it was just seen as a standard operating procedure for him at this point.
