im not gonna sit by & let him destroy himself w/o him knowing exactly where i stand and make sure he knows im only doing this bc i want him to grow & mature & fulfil his promise
as long as he's tricking his dough in the streets, refusing to love his fellow humans & acting like a petulant child who refuses to grow up & show some respect & class, im not gonna let him stay in the home ive built

There is too much great music out there (especially old ish) to be mad about the direction of contemporary hip hop. Not to mention I think the ignorant ish has a place at the table right along with the smarty art ish.

I am at the age now where I just can't relate to a lot of the new shit coming out, hip-hop or otherwise. But I still try, I just limit myself to shit that I truly feel is worth checking out whether it's recommended to me or I happen upon it some other way. But I spend most of my days now catching up on old or middle-aged music that I missed when I was focused on other music. Shit that I can relate to because it is from artists I grew up with/on or because the subject matter just hits me more because of the time period it was released in.
But I don't spend an awful lot of time bitching about it anymore, at all. It's a waste of time, I got other shit to worry about, and there's too much GOOD shit out there, old and new, to distract me. Which, let's be honest, is how it's always been.
Hip-hop ain't dead. It's very much alive. Just find the niche you like and move along.

you made a post talking to the genre of hip-hop.
i love a lot of music, but i've never written an open letter to a musical genre.
and if i were to write such a letter, it certainly wouldn't be based on the premise that the genre is dead. if you can't find something you like, either find another genre to listen to or work harder to find new material you like or just dig up some old records from the golden era that you like the most.
but don't do this.
hell, common's "i used to love her" made more sense than this. he was talking about the mourning period that came about when he realized that his subculture was becoming the mainstream culture. that has happened to many subcultures along the way, and there's always something that gets lost in the translation. i dig that.
but hip hop has been pop for the past 20 years. even common has accepted it. (check out his verse on "love of my life.")
it's time to let it go.

I received some feedback on my blog some years ago along the lines that I'm never really that critical of anything. I like everything, in essence.
My response was that I buy plenty of records I'm not crazy about, but I don't feel the need to talk about those in lieu of records that I'm genuinely excited about.
I've given bad reviews to stuff, but those days are mostly over.
``i know you are fake. . . 'cause man, i'm the same.``
