like an honest, no-nonsense guy. Once again Peter Rosenberg shows that he knows next to nothing about anything that happened before rappers started wearing backpacks. Hopefully they'll grab Dante for Combat Jack as well, there's a lot more for him to talk about.

And I agree about Rosenberg. His Know-It-All Nerd persona falls flat when it's shown he doesn't know much at all.

I can imagine that working with someone who was smoking dust all the time would be difficult, but it probably also describes 75% of NY rappers in the late '80s/early '90s. Singling her out seems silly unless it really interfered with the recording process. Regardless, we get it: You're cashing $700K checks and she's on her lunch break at Wendy's. Give it a rest.

And it all involved him being the real idea guy.

Like that he in fact produced "Pop Goes the Weasel" and he was the guy who brought the group together. He probably didn't like Serch sideways disparaging "Pop Goes the Weasel," since he pretty clearly is the most proud of his successful shit and is uncomfortable in his status as a backpacker icon.

..(often lesser-known) albums that he was involved with the backpackers tend to gravitate to. And he does that in other interviews besides one. This isn't the first time I've heard him shit on the Shazzy album. Or the second LONS album. I've read him talk about how much he disliked the Hard 2 Obtain album. He used to talk about how much he didn't like Del's second album, but I think he came around on that when they interviewed him for the 20 year anniversary.

I get it, because in these cases he A&Rd these albums, and a lot of them were commercial flops. And he did have success in getting non-pop hip-hop groups to sell reasonably well back then. But "Black Bastards" is one of the few non-commercial hits that he was involved with that I've heard him speak of well.

some type of hip-hop historian. It doesn't give him a pass to be wrong but the reality is that he appears on the show in a complimentary role.

I totally get what your saying and nobody knows everything but there are some basic things that it would be nice if people in their positions were knowledgable about. I think anyone who publicly represents a genre or subculture should know some important facts that are easily attainable.

while being laughably wrong like 'Colors came out in 1985'.

His whole shit is just irksome: he's mostly unfunny, his voice grates, he knows less about anything pre-late-90s hip-hop than half of this board even in regards to New York hip-hop, he often makes it about him when no one cares about his Bethesda hip-hop experiences when people that were there are in the middle of speaking.

Thankfully he gets checked by Dante a couple times on this & Dante knows how to steer the conversation back to his story.

That's your thing and by all means, do you.

Selfishly it mighta been slightly cooler if you were actually funny enough to pull it off in a way that provided some entertainment but oh well, guess I'll mostly just keep it moving and continue to not care.

'claimed'? 'credentials'?

what's with all the awkward validation-themed terminology?

It's kinda weird.

All I said was if you or another OKP reading this is in DC, feel free to hit up my boy's bar & drop my name if you do, that's been my man since he first got off the boat from Ireland in '86, proud of dude & plug his spot unsolicited from time to time.

>but i prolly did live closer to the District than u did to

Nah, I'd wager a grip of good money that's false but no idea why that even comes up or what a municipality-tape-measure contest is supposed to represent in your weird little world.

If you're studying me, you're doing it wrong.

If you got some pressing biographical inquiry for me, g'head and ask to get an authentic autobiographical answer.

Dante was like, "I was there".

I just think it's weird for everyone to sandbag rosenberg & Ciphas when, if it weren't for them, there wouldn't be these interviews.

So it seems silly to me to hate because he didn't know who Ra was signed to Rush.

and then when some real shit comes up you out here looking crazy. I appreciate what he and Ciph are doing on this show. Hell I fux with Ciph period and he straight up said he didn't mess with Return of the 36 which is one of the great albums for me. But he doesn't pretend to be into it. I don't know everything nor do I claim to. But you know what he's doing his podcast and more power to him.

I just don't like some of his views and his voice overall.

Cannot stand how he cuts off guests to share stories about what he was vibing to in 8th grade. The funniest sh*t is how often he name drops the discovery of Show and A.G.'s Runaway Slaves with 90's guests as if it was this obscure release.

This is why, despite the fact that I find Dallas annoying, the Combat Jack show has always been superior. Those dudes know the history of rap, so you don't have to sit around and listen to them rehash sh*t that all of us know and more importantly, they experienced hip-hop in a way that none of us have. I assume that all of us who have been around here since the beginning can relate better to that show.

I agree with most of this but them Combat Jack niccas be talking too much too. Let the guest talk and shut the hell up sometimes.

between letting the guests talk and keeping it moving. The difference is that combat jack's crew was actually there for a lot of sh*t that they talk about, but I completely agree with your broader point.

Great little nuggets in there.

And the ODB story was great. As was breaking down how they used to sneak guns onto airplanes.

No one's impressed. "Had me like Yo!" Cause its crazy and funny how much street life/culture was a part of early rap music. Its another story that confirms that cultural and musical climate. Like Ross talking bout Brand Nu beating up soundmen and De La performing in front of crips.

But Starks Dunk BBall and Imvscpl already broke that shit down for you last month and you stayed acting like a jackass after

Log off you non-funny ass fool

They pride themselves on being unprepared, low budget and (at times) unknowledgeable.

I mean, they record this show at the biggest hip-hop radio station in the country and will turn their mics to their laptops when they want to play a song.

That's Juan Epstein.

Ebro used to get on them about being unprepared to interview people. I think Cipha started to step it up a bit and be more prepared but yeah, it's just a part of the show. At times it's embarassing (the Dante Ross "Colors" thing) but the rest of time it's just mildly annoying (e.g. not asking questions that they should, messing up song titles and dates, etc).

As has been said in this post already the main draw of these podcasts is the guests. I've listened to most Juan Epstein episodes with a guest but the ones with just them I never ever listen to.

You don't need to be 'prepared' to not holler about Colors coming out in 1985.

And they got Hot 97 budget, which is why they get better guests then Combat Jack.

'prepared' is more like having questions formed, that's not really the issue.

right, because there's nothing really that interesting or entertaining about listening to their banter if there's not a guest involved, this is probably why they lose to the Breakfast Club in the ratings.

It's strictly NBA hoop discussion which may not be your cup of tea to but if it is just go to your iTunes store, type in 'Roundball Rock on Repeat' & DL/Subscribe/Listen.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you, player.

Anybody that calls the Brooklyn Zoo clean version WACK? I question your hip hop sensibilities. Sorry, I just gotta. If you prefer the explicit version that's on you, (fair enough) but to outright say the clean is wack, your buggin. Shame on a NUH...sure I'll give you that one, But the Zoo? Nah B.

i can see how people might prefer the dirty, but to say the clean is superior isn't too much of a stretch or a worthwhile hip-hop historical note compared to 95% of radio edits where they scratch/reverse/distort the curses

Those vocal punch ins were fucking bizarre and imho adds to the appeal. A few years back a bunch of friends and I were looking valiantly for a high bit rate mp3 version. Hell, on my main itunes library I think i DELETED the dirty version and added the clean to the album.

Nor am I shamed in the slightest by your attempt at judgement for celebrating artists despite their personal demons/chemical dependencies since those issues have existed since the beginning of time.

So rather than embark on a joyless exercise engaging in a debate over you paternalistically pretending to care for the welfare (no pun intended) of ODB while unimaginatively assigning a forced racial narrative devoid of nuance to my enjoyment of the man's music and spirit, I'd just welcome you to revisit my earlier post on the topic:

http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=2500873&mesg_id=2500873&listing_type=search

Meanwhile I'll continue to enjoy his prime era work as I do Hank Williams, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain or F.. Scott Fitzgerald and other favorites.

If still unsatisfied from there, feel free to heed the instructions in said post's subject line.

he shoulda been in a court-appointed rehab or even psych floor before Rikers.

And I refuse to cop or even listen to any of the posthumous albums of cutting room floor warbling, Roc-a-fella b-sides or that depressing reality show with the white manager carting him from place to place.

Or skipping that bullshit feature film somehow called 'Dirty White Boy' with the white manager & Omar playing ODB whenever it comes out (hopefully never).

But the stuff that he did before that, both in terms of verses/songs/albums but even antics, was monumental.

Bob putting the cuts out on Fondelem doesn't mean there wasn't some foul play afoot beforehand. The way Bob told the story on Combat Jack it was Pete's idea who mentioned it to Doom who then took the masters to Bob.
