"A retrospective of Grammy "Best Rap Album" Robberies (The Roots are #1)"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Rap_Album

First thing that stands out,

EVERY Eminem album except Encore won Best Rap Album. LOL. Grammy voters have no shame.

Second thing that stands out,

Dayum @ how many times the roots got beat by an obviously inferior album.

-2013: Drake's Take Care beats The Roots "Undun" and Nas "Life Is Good"
-2011: Eminem's Recovery beats The Roots "How I Got Over"
-2010: Eminem's Relapse beats Mos Def's "The Ecstatic" and Q-Tip's "The Renaissance"
-2009: Lil Wayne's The Carter beats Jay-Z – American Gangster, Lupe Fiasco's The Cool, Nas – Untitled
-2007: Ludacris' Relapse Theory beats The Roots "Game Theory" and Lupe's "Food & Liquor"
-2000: Eminem's SSLP beats The Roots "Things Fall Apart"
-1998: Puff Daddy's No Way Out beats Wu Forever and Biggie's Life After Death

Thoughts? 2011, 2010, and 2007 are worse to me than The Heist beating GKMC. Yeah, it was Kendrick's breakout album and he deserves it, but I like The Heist a lot. But...Recovery over HIGO? Relapse Theory over Game Theory AND F&L??? thats the worst one to me, actually

Undun, HIGO, and Game Theory definitely should've won, in my opinion.
For SSLP, I was too young to make any kind of well informed opinion. I was a big fan of SSLP at the time and I always thought TFA was too long. I should really give that album a few spins.

I was going to look on the grammys site and forgot to do it. But damn, being reminded they have done this for nearly a decade makes me care less. And come to the scary realization that for hip hop the BET award is more relevant than a Grammy lol

>but i am a little surprised they've never won 1 though.

And, Undun and How I Got Over are not the two albums from their discog that you want to be rooting for.

Just because the Roots released an album that year and were nominated doesn't make them worthy of winning.

The year Ludacris beat them, they should have won. Game Theory was a GREAT album.

Honestly, I think most artists know that the Grammy's really are just a popularity contest AND you're guaranteed to lose if you're going up against a white artist.

We really need to establish our own non-coonified/non-hipster doofus awards.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

Easily. I really enjoyed all of those albums, especially Game Theory, but in terms of "robbery" the way Kendrick got robbed, for the grammys we have to factor in popularity. Them losing to Drake, Em' and Luda isn't really that surprising if you take popularity into account, whereas Kendrick right now is actually big enough to the point where one could factor in popularity and he still had a big chance. In fact to most people he seemed like the obvious pick, so obvious to the point that social media was going off. For the record I loved Kendrick's album as well too, oh well, he doesn't need a Grammy to validate him anyway, anyone young knows how that album was recieved and it will be remembered very fondly.

Also 98' is a pretty bad offender here....what the fuck. I know I wasn't old enough to know what was going on but god damn

It doesn't matter if you only listen to alternative rock, you can vote in the hip hop, country, metal, etc categories. And who are you going to vote for in this case? The artists whose name you know (which is why Eminem will always win, Kanye, Jay, Drake, and now even Common, will always be nominated) and who makes the catchiest (pop), listenable music on the surface for someone with very little attention span for a genre they don't normally listen to or care about.

There honestly should be separate committees of voters for each genre. Award shows themselves are pretty dumb in general, but if you're going to do it, you should at least TRY to do it right.

In response to Reply # 0

Let's put this in prospective: Granny awards are OLD, white and the voters rarely listen to our music. With these facts, art will eventually prevail because WE know what hip hop is. All of those "losing" albums almost fulfil the tenets of hip hop.

I will end with a sad reality about the upcoming oscar. 12 Years A Slave will most likely not win because it is a movie about the psychological pyschosis of slavery and america collective belief at the time(and today). The same reason Do the Right Thing lost to Dances with Wolves. Lee's film 20 plus years later has been more relevant while Dance is a forgot winner.

My point is Undun, MAAD City, Wu Forever... will stand the artistic test of time because we know the what is real.

Let's support artistic merit by when they are produced.

I woulda went with Life is Good.

>-2011: What else was nominated. Neither should have won.

>-2010: Mos Def's Ecstatic should've won for sure.

>-2009: Lil Wayne's The Carter 3 was undeinable. But I woulda gave it to American Gangster.

>-2007: The Roots' Game Theory should've beat anything nominated. The best album in The Roots' catalog.

>-2000: Again, like Carter 3, SSLP was undeniable whether people liked it or not. But I could see The Roots winning. If they would've had that best rap/sung collab back then... You Got Me woulda won easy.

>-1998: LMAAAO at Puff's No Way Out beating his artists' OPUS. I woulda gave it to WU-FOREVER though.
>

And this year? If GKMC didn't win rap album of the year, NO SHOT at album of the year any genre. And they couldn't give Mack AOTY any genre because he woulda been the first to win AOTY any genre as a rapper. So he had to win RAP aoty. I thought Kendrick shoulda won RAP aoty at least. I thought he shoulda won AOTY any genre based on what was nominated.

You Got Me did win for Best Rap/Sung Collab back then...which is enough ammo for how Things Fall Apart should have won for Best Rap Album. I am fine with Em taking it. At least they split it...The Roots got their only Rap Grammy...they have 2 others but that was from the R&B Collab with John Legend.

about music anyhow? It's gotta be far and away the most meaningless "big award" out of the EGOTs. I'm not even saying that they're snubbing people of awards rather than just plain not knowing what's out there. Like, at all.

>-2013: Drake's Take Care beats The Roots "Undun" and Nas "Life
>Is Good"

Take Care is better than both of those albums.

>-2011: Eminem's Recovery beats The Roots "How I Got Over"

Recovery was terrible, but HIGO is probably the weakest Roots album, imo.

>-2010: Eminem's Relapse beats Mos Def's "The Ecstatic" and
>Q-Tip's "The Renaissance"

Deservedly so. Relapse is a goddamned clinic on technical emceeing and I can barely stand Eminem.

>-2009: Lil Wayne's The Carter beats Jay-Z – American Gangster,
>Lupe Fiasco's The Cool, Nas – Untitled

American Gangster came out in 2007. How was it nominated in 2009? AG is probably one of Jay's better albums, but I think I might still prefer Tha Carter III.

>-2007: Ludacris' Relapse Theory beats The Roots "Game Theory"
>and Lupe's "Food & Liquor"

*This* is when The Roots were robbed. Game Theory is a masterpiece.

>-2000: Eminem's SSLP beats The Roots "Things Fall Apart"

Roots probably should have won for TFA, too, but I can't be mad at Eminem winning. SSLP is probably his only great album apart from Relapse.

>-1998: Puff Daddy's No Way Out beats Wu Forever and Biggie's
>Life After Death

Missy's Supa Dupa Fly, which was also nominated that year, should have won.

Esteemed author of the celebrated, double-platinum post: "Drake - Wu-Tang Forever".

For as much success he has achieved, there is no other rapper that has been this successful that still spits as hard as he does. Ill rhymes, ill concepts, ill flows. Lil' Wayne has good punchlines....but that's about it. Eminem comes from hip hop and reps it. Has he had wack stuff? Of course!!! They all do. But Eminem winning anything is not a robbery. Macklemore winning is not a robbery. He spits some real stuff too. Kendrick should've won...but ehhh. Grammys are white as fuck. Even though it is an honor to be nominated...people should never forget that. Rich white people living up in the hills (or wherever) will and can never fully understand and appreciate inner city culture. They'll get close by adopting a few elements, but that's about it.
Since it is what it is....if any white person wins....I am okay with seeing Macklemore and Eminem. Now if it was Paris Hilton, Brian Austin Greene, or Justin Bieber.....then yes, there would be serious issues.
Nas is not safe, The Roots wouldn't sound right if they ever took the 'safe' route, and Lupe is not 'safe' which is why I never see them winning 'Best Rap Album' category....they will always win in other categories like "Best rap collabo...." or some shit like that.

Regardless of skills, he has no business winning for best album when his albums are terrible.

Even when he was at his best(up to about 2002), I don't think he ever came close to making the best rap album of any year.

The only Eminem albums I didn't like were 'Encore' and 'Relapse'. His other works are good to me.

The Grammys will never get it right when it comes to the 'Best Rap Album' category. If no white artists are in that category for a particular year, then it will go to a 'safe' Black artist such as Drake, Kanye, Jay-Z....and maybe Lil' Wayne (T.I. too......and that's kind of iffy).

So seeing how that's how it's gonna go every year, I am content with a white rapper from the underground battle scene and ill freestyler get the awards than a rapper not about that hip hop life.

I am fine with him winning the grammys...because I fear who they would give it to otherwise...while I feel like the Roots were snubbed a few times...there is no guarantee that they would have won it...

Sometimes the best rap album of the year doesn't get nominated for a grammy AT ALL...getting a nomination is an accomplishment in itself...the Academy didn't straight disrespect him...he got a nomination nod for Album of the Year...thats a HUGE accomplishment...considering hip hop doesn't always get a slot there and they got TWO this year...

Looking at that wiki page the only Em win I can't argue with is MMLP, cuz the eminem show was up against some wack albums imo so that was a default.

The Grammys love rewarding shit like that regardless of whether the music is actually good.

In the wake of the O'Riley shit, he had now become a 'respected' actor-turn-rapper with his supporting roles in Hustle & Flow and the putrid Oscar-winning Crash.

There's the ham-fisted try at political rap on Slap, the save-the-young-runaway-girls song/video w/Mary, the preaching song with the now comically unfortunate feature of Bishop Eddie Long and the 'I'm not a crack dealer' final contribution to the TI battle.

Add to that it being one of the year's biggest sellers along with the lukewarm critic/fan response to Kingdom Come and that album winning was a layup.

I have no idea why anyone really cares about this shit though, particularly hip-hop fans.

As a kid growing up in the era of 'Who Gives A Fuck About A Goddamn Grammy?' on one of the greatest rap albums of all-time and remembers the Yo!MTV Raps episode where Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince of all clean-cut acts were organizing a fuck-the-Grammys party for them not televising rap awards, it was always pretty clear how clueless this institution was.

And it ain't even really about rap, they were wack for decades before the genre even existed.

It's the show where Abbey Road & Let It Bleed were losing out on Album of the Year to Blood, Sweat & Tears.

Where Metallica lost in the 1988 Heavy Metal Album category to Jethro Tull.

A place where Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Led Zepplin and now Nas never garnered a single trophy or in some cases nomination.

If you're a more-than-casual-follower-of-music, not giving a shit about a Grammy is a cliche but also a basic tenet of being a fan.

Nominees:

1) Ludacris - Word of Mouf
2) Mystikal - Tarantula
3) Nelly - Nellyville
4) Petey Pablo - Diary of a Sinner: 1st Entry
5) Eminem - The Eminem Show

The Eminem Show (obviously & deservedly) won the award, but really? Those were the nominees??

A) THREE OF THESE ALBUMS WERE RELEASED IN 2001 (Mystikal/Petey Pabs/Ludacris)!
B) Scarface's "The Fix" got no Grammy love, eh?
C) Other 2002 releases included Talib's "Quality", Nas "God's Son", The Roots "Phrenology", Jurassic 5 "Power In Numbers"
D) Petey Pablo?? Really? *sigh*
