"Poll question: So who signed up for Beats Music?"
Tue Jan-21-14 11:48 AM by imcvspl

Beats Music aims to deliver a personalized and curated listening experience that’s never been done before.

“Popular music is created in bite size pieces, one song at a time – but most people need more than four minutes to be truly satisfied,” said Jimmy Iovine in a press release. “It takes a highly curated, uninterrupted sequence of songs to achieve a fulfilling music experience, where the only song as important as the song you are listening to is the song that comes next.”

It's a billion times better designed than Spotify but I play enough mixtapes that local playback will make me stick with spotify for the time being.

That's a big negative for me. Not seeing the great advantages over spotify (though I think it's marketing is great to bundle with ATT Cellular).

Also the social aspect. There's like an embeded network right? At least that's what I assume from XXL promo saying follow them.

The sound quality is better than Spotify, but the shit will play one song (if I'm lucky) and then crashes. This launch is a fail. They need better servers to handle all the traffic.

I'll probably check it out but am not holding my breath...

I pay 10 bucks a month for Rdio (which gives unlimited desktop and mobile access). What I like most about Rdio that no other streaming system has really matched is that it's genuinely the most social (and there's an actual community of listeners on there, too).

At this point, services seem to be moving *away* from social toward the "curated for you, you, you are all that matters, just you" model. Which I don't really have any interest in. I don't want a curated channel that appeals to my "taste" - rather, I want to find shit that challenges my taste, lol...

I've used them all and Pandora is probably the best but it ain't great.

I thought Spotify playlist would be huge and everyone would be swapping playlist and DJs would be vying for king of the great playlist but that hasn't really happened yet.

it doesn't recommend music directly (it can, but i don't use that feature much) ... instead, it directs you to what other listeners that you have chosen to follow have listened to recently. It's a subtle difference but an important one.

but never liked the interface. The Beats interface is designed much much better than either. Selection seems to be the same as the other streaming services. The download (available offline) option works fine. Haven't had any crashes yet.

I'll probably switch over after the trial.

The killer app has to be very social. There should be power users that I follow and allow them to put me on to new music. More like Soundcloud with licensed Majors music.

forgive my ignorance but are any of these services better than pandora?

all i really want to do is select an artist or song and then have it do the work for me. along the way i can customize the station so it doesn't play shit i don't like and figures out my taste.

what is the benefit of using this or spotify over pandora?

I like Pandora and use it when I don't wan to think about song selection. but it's nice to be able to play the song you want, the playlist you want and to hear the mixtapes you downloaded no matter what device you are working with.

Spotify lets you make playlists of any songs of your choosing.
They also have radio just like Pandora that you can listen to based on an
artist, song or album. You can skip or give a thumbs up or down. Another
reason Spotify is better is that there's no limit to the amount of times you
can skip.
After being on Spotify, I have no idea why people do this Pandora thing.
It's like a bootleg Spotify without the best parts.

by habit and ease of use.

Some folks don't want to mess with finding individual artists/songs/albums, they're just looking for something that will play some music they like. And because it's been around so long, they stick with Pandora (even though the other services can technically do the same thing).

And I can get that. Now that the time limit is lifted on Spotify, though, my guess is it's going to start to give Pandora more competition on that front... folks will probably start to realize that it functions as both library and recommendation/radio service.

Google owns youtube and has Google Play for everything you're talking about.
Beyond that VEMO would likely be who moves closer to what you want except it's all 'official' uploads which isn't what you want because the value of youtube is the user uploads. But even if you got what you wanted, you'd end up with a transcoded mess. Not to mention youtube is already trying to do something like this with the 'buy this song' links on music uploads which just take you to an actual music service.

A youtube subscription service is already in the works

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/how-youtubes-subscription-service-will-benefit-record-labels-20131025

And what is going to make the youtube the killer subscription service will be user generated content.

https://futureofmusic.org/blog/2013/06/18/new-service-collecting-royalties-youtube

That means that youtube will have the most extensive music library by far (including covers, mixtapes and other content that the actual creator did not upload) and it will be all legal.

By the way, VEVO is a google product (a joint venture with the labels) so it's something that can be easily incorporated into a youtube app.

Also, I don't know why you mean by transcoding mess.

Transcode means that someone uploads a shitty rip to youtube. What youtube does in turn is match it with a google play download, except that means it has to be inside of google play already, which for the special stuff users upload isn't always the case. So how do you get that? They can't offer you the shitty rip legally. The only stuff they can offer you is the stuff they've already got in Google Play.

Forget Google Play. Google Play doesn't do anything that any other music subscription can do. What will be killer about a youtube App will be the non-official music. All the covers, remixes, mixtape cuts and poorly recorded versions of songs currently found on youtube. And it's all can be legal. You say that they can't offer you the shitty rip legally and the only stuff they can offer you is the stuff they've already got in Google Play but that is not necessarily true. I mean youtube currently has all that stuff and they are all legally compliant as long as they respond to take down notices. Also, youtube has the technology to identify music even when its poorly recorded or a cover. So technically it's possible for youtube to work out deals with the labels to pay them their share even when it's not an official original recording.

It might not be in the first iteration of the youtube service but it is inevitable.

How can any music service compete with Youtube which has Billions of music clips?

so i created an account and it gave me the following playlists: nas/az, quintessential 50 cent, r. kelly and some albums to listen to (half of which i already heard). the artists I selected were nas, thievery corp, and air.

i have no clue what i'm doing @ this point but I'll let it sink in i suppose.

I made very predictable mixes. Lots of "mainstream" radio hits. The curated lists were the typical "xyzmagnobodycaresabout's top track of blah year"

I have yet to find a music service that make better rap mixes than just putting my collection on shuffle.
