If you're an established artist like Jay and are getting a WHOPPING amount of money up front and. because of your star status, won't have to grind like a slave to make it back.
But, for a new artist, I'm pretty sure the terms of the contract will be very "rapey", to say the least. I think that, once you make sure you still own your name and don't sign to some crazy extended period of time or release count (like LL back in the day with the 10 album contract), you'll be fine.
Something like a 3 album deal is sufferable and gives you the opportunity to renegotiate while still in your prime.
But, that's the sacrifice many make for stardom. Far as I've heard, Kanye had a pretty "rapey" contract back in the day where he was giving up damn near all his publishing. But, as the stories convey, he was willing to do ANYTHING to get on. I'm pretty sure he might be under a 10 album contract himself, probably because when Dame and 'nem signed him, they didn't really think he would have made it this far. Pretty sure it's not 360, though, so all this endorsement and product money he's making is ALL him. Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.
