the commercial made it sound like jay and these legendary producers were just jamming in the studio, bouncing off ideas...
and this exactly what you want from an artist like jay z.
so whoever conceived this commercial... knows that music snobs have these ideas of what they imagine legends look like when they vibe in the studio...
so they designed a commercial to look like exactly that.
and then the album came out, and what we got was... product.
which is not to say that product is bad. and it's not to say that there was nothing good on the album.
but the manipulation from above was far too apparent. it was just so clear that he's a business, man. i think that's what pissed him off.
personally, i've always seen jay z as a politician. i don't think jay z has "sold out;" his career is exactly where he always wanted it to be.
i think that he got that reaction from the snobs because the marketing was so transparent, and nobody likes it when it's obvious that somebody is trying to manipulate them into feeling a certain way.
