"in my lifetime v1"

take off the 4 weak songs

add 3 songs from "streets is watching" sdtrk (in my lifetime rmx, only a customer, murdergram ft dmx and ja) + wishing on a star (his most underrated song from that era imo)

and you have an album that's arguably as good as his debut. that's his lost classic.

... a trilogy collectors edition. I can see that being a lucrative idea. But the fucks at Def Jam don't hear me though. I'm sure Jigga would sign off on it too.

Than next year do the same treatment with the BluePrints. I know they did the Blueprint 1&2 thing but Sean has control of all of that and I'm sure would give a discount for them to package it. Anywho who am I?

It really is his 3rd best album.

My version on iTunes plays like this;

Intro
A Million and One Questions/Rhyme No more
Rap Game/Crack Game
Where I'm From
City Is Mine
Imaginary Players
Lucky Me
Who You Wit
Streets Is Watching
Friend Or Foe 98
Real N*gg*s
Wishing Upon A Star
You Must Love Me
In My Lifetime (Original)

I didn't add anything from the soundtrack but that would be fine as well.

"The City Is Mine" and "I Know What Girls Like". "Sunshine" was dope but the video was so bad that it made people dislike the song. I guess "Face Off" could count as three.

i prolly do hate "sunshine" the least out of the 4 (ROCKIN' IT!!!) but it's undeniably inferior to the 4 replacements i suggested.

IML and WoaS are absolutely phenomenal songs, either would've fit seamlessly on reasonable doubt. OaC isn't too far behind those 2. and murdergram is just quintessential grimy hardbody late-90s NY street shit.

the addition of those 4 put v1 over the top.

Word. this album gets the most replay from me after BP and AG. Where I'm From is a top 3 jay song IMO.

I feel like niggas give it the 'It Was Written' treatment. Just so tough to meet expectations after a classic.

with it having been the last thing they've done while still in the midst of releasing, promoting, performing it.

It isn't until they get a bit of distance between themselves & that period where they can put it in some kind of perspective.

David Bowie might think or say The Next Day is better than Station to Station right now, I wouldn't really consider it a shame either way even if it's not true.

But you take off the blatant pop appeal crap, and it's fine.

As said above, Vol. 1 through 3 have become sorta underrated and have definitely improved with age.

which basically consists of those 3 albums minus all the puffyisms.

and the irony is that a lot of jay's best material from that era is already in the "soulful, melodic, 80s r&b sample / interpolation / sung hook" vein, he didn't even need to go for the over-the-top blatant overtures.

but it could have something to do with Vol 1 being the first full album of Jay's I heard
I heard "Ain't No Nigga" when it dropped
but never played Reasonable Doubt in its entirety until the 1998 reissue

It gets more hate than it deserves because of the video, IMO. I never minded the song. Only really wack song was I know what Girls Like.

Sunshine and City is Mine don't make any best of Jay playlists, but they weren't wack songs at all. On most of his recent albums, they'd be highlights.
