Death Row sold more records but that W was inescapable. They had Wu-Wear in Atlanta. The fucking dirty south.

although I don't know that Death Row had the overseas (especially in China) impact/following that Wu had...but by American standards Death Row had the sales, the critical acclaim, and every single label in the country and their artists trying to emulate them. I think they win this poll easily.

Death Row was essentially the next phase of what was going on with NWA and Ruthless Records and Dre was a central figure in both so I don't even really think of them as different.

Wu was really huge, but i'm not sure how much influence they had on the west coast....however, i know the whole country and the world was riding HARD for Death Row....as has been said b4, they had 3 of the biggest rap acts PERIOD ....honestly Tupac ALONE was bigger than the Wu.....

Death Row's success was so strongly built on the Chronic and the Snoop/Dre combo; already by the third "real" album from Death Row, Dogg Pound, it had begun to peter out; it sold because of the "brand" and I guess that's what this post is about but still; Wu-Tang meanwhile managed to drop a classic debut followed within three years by no less than five solo-albums from various members of the clan that people bought on the strength of the brand; what RZA achieved in 95 in particular should not be dismissed and I don't think Death Row ever pulled off something like that even if I guess the success of "Above the rim" and "Murder was the case" comps kind of counter that.

Whatever, Death Row might have been bigger but I don't think the brand was as strong as Wu-Tang at their peak...

Not really a longevity question. In fact I would argue part of the reason Wu was so big was that it was seen as the East Coast's answer (along with Biggie) to Death Row and the West Coast's dominance at that time.

Death Row was Bo Jackson. Four super strong amazing years then that was it. Wu's peak wasn't nearly as big. But they stayed around forever and are still in demand

Bo's peak was never better than Barry's peak.Plus it was a chance to incorporate Bo Jackson into a music discussion so I had to respond to you.

>Death Row was Bo Jackson. Four super strong amazing years
>then that was it. Wu's peak wasn't nearly as big. But they
>stayed around forever and are still in demand

To be honest Tupac & Snoop as individuals dead this argument. At their peaks they were bigger and are still more in demand than Wu.

Suge Knight alone was a charismatic character alone

Super Producer and protege talent scout and Rapper Dr. Dre

SuperStar in house Artist Snoop Dogg

Nate Dogg got a good deal as well.

i mean Lady of rage was on the Steve Harvey show as a regular.

tha dogg pound had a career. daz and Kurrupt did there thang.

Death row had it all and what a story it was for a minute

the mere fact that this board exists, and acts that branched off that movement (Kanye, The Roots, Lil Bro, etc) is a strong testament to that following..

I mean, is there a Death Row/Wu fanbase still as strong this many years later? And what new artists are following in their footsteps artistically?

I've seen people with Wu Tang tattoos. I've never seen folks with a New and Untouchable Death Row Records tat. Just saying.

Death Row was huge I'll giv yall that, but Wu-Tang's reach was insane.

I'd probably place Death Row's peak at All Eyez though Doggystyle is close. Wu-Tangs has to be Forever. *quick wiki search* by the numbers wu tang was on top. Eyez sold 566k first week Forever sold 612k. Wu had gone 4x plat in three months. Eyez is 5x by 2011 (it of course hit 4x before that but I don't know that it was as quickly). Doggystyle wasn't certified 4x until 2008 (there maybe some double album math here which negates the point on Snoop but still works for Pac). Add to that Wu-Tang was number one on more international charts and you get the picture.

It's funny but I'm inclined to think people don't want to believe this is possible because of the 'pop longevity of what came out of Death Row vs Wu. But yeah man they were at the top.

Also shouldn't Bad Boy be in the discussion?
