"Funny how rockists love The Rolling Stones but hate the Bee Gees"

Both were British takes on the Black American sound of their day (or 5 years later). Don't get me wrong, some critics acknowledge this, but the average fan does not. And as far as a 70s arena touring band goes (the pinnacle of that era, they held their own with Parliament, EW&F, Chicago and the like).

...and were extremely fucking good at it, like practically the best. Bee Gees on the other hand started out as a soft-pop band and they were good at that too but not comparable. Later Bee Gees started to go in a more MOR-direction as well as R&B, disco etc. and many of those rockists might not care too much for those styles.

Alternatively, they might not think that the Bee Gees were as good as the actual R&B and disco-acts of the era; maybe a bit too pop- and lightweight-sounding compared with the big funk-bands or the best disco.

Of course, Rolling Stones did that stuff too but their reputation is primarily based on their raw rock-songs from the 60's and the classic roots-rock albums they did between 68-72; had Stones status been based strictly on albums like "Black and Blue" and singles like "Miss You" and "Emotional rescue", they would probably be viewed as a lesser act than Bee Gees, even by the rockists; however, it's not really that material that gets props and appear on "Best ever"-lists...

(Send It To Me, half of Black & Blue) fake punk (half of Some Girls), fake barouque/chamber pop (As Tears Go By, Lady Jane), fake country (Dead Flowers, Sweet Virginia) and on and on.

However it was always filtered through the lens of being The Rolling Stones-an originally-blues-based/bar-room-Beatles/riff-and-rebel-posing/sixties-singles-machine British band that went on to be arguably the greatest rock & roll band of all-time in their apex with the BeggarsBanquet/LetItBleed/StickyFingers/GetYerYaYasOut/ExileOnMainStreet sequence cementing that legacy but with highlights prior and then to follow in later periods.

The Bee Gees on the other hand wouldn't even be considered a rock band by most rock fans then or even now.

Awwww.....

J/k

Shock's answer came after J had already thoroughly explained why he thinks Rockists revere the Stones over the Bee Gees. Rather than cosign that or repeat it he gave the short version, which is 'no'. Lol

But importantly, you got your answer. And some light ribbing. The Lesson is not a place for soft feewings. Take that to Confession Wednesday in GD.

fuck you.

The Stones helped define the arena concert tour in the early 70s and perfected it throughout the decade and beyond. They have a serious edge over the Bee Gees there too. Anyway it's sliced the Bee Gees are the inferior act when viewed through a Rock lens. Which is why Rockists would give the Stones more props.

fuck you.

But we can differ in opinions
Quote unquote rockists don't claim a lot of artists/bands that don't fit their rock mold
Just like other genres don't seem to claim artists/bands that don't fit their ideas of a genre
Hell...try and get your average rock fan to rep funkadelic as one the best rock bands

With that said, it speaks volumes that the rock gatekeepers have them in the hall when other so called rock gods aren't.

rockists generally don't like disco - or MOR - at all.

and the bee gees are certainly not in the RRHOF for their pre-saturday night fever material

i think they're basically in there because of their sales only.

They did eventually turn into kind of an oldies/rehash act, but don't front on how chameleonic they were to start out with. What people think of as the "essential Stones sound" doesn't cover about half their music.

Because Le Freak is the Biggest selling record of all time for Atlantic

And if it's cultural impact...KISS should have been a shoe in

But I digress

I'm gonna bow out of this discussion because there's a generalization of rockists that don't fit my idea of a rockists

But I understand where you're coming from with the MOR thing

However, SNF didn't sell all those copies on its own

Rock folks tend to shit on things 10 years after the fact only to embrace it 20 years later.

BG's had a HUGE resurgence in the 90's

Mofos including so called rockists don't front on them anymore

In response to Reply # 28

...they are really not particularly highly rated in those circles. Actually, ABBA is a good comparison as an act that isn't necessarily shitted on anymore but whose music is still more highly regarded from a sheer craft perspective ("You know, ABBA wrote some really good songs and the production was immaculate!") or as a "guilty pleasure" than viewed as an important, quality act. I'd put Bee Gees in the same boat.

>And if it's cultural impact...KISS should have been a shoe in

Kiss cultural impact was mostly felt in hair-metal musically and amongst teenagers and kids socially/culturally; neither of those things are highly rated by rockists. Personally, I would have put Kiss in there years ago but I actually think their *music* is underrated; I doubt most rockists-as opposed to RAWKISTS-feel the same way. Actually, even many rawkists don't care for Kiss and it's quite easy to explain why. Whatever, I dig the music they did between 74-77, was a big fan as a kid and never felt any shame about that even if I don't exactly consider them an amazing band or a GOAT or anything...

Yes but the standard-bearers and core ideals of rockism has remained fairly static over the years; it's more about "OK, they weren't that bad and actualy pretty good and SOME disco is good music" than suddenly elevating a disco-act to Beatles/Stones/Dylan/Bowie/Springsteen/whatever status.

Note though that i'm not sure traditional rockists are particularly influential in the current rock-critic landscape which seems more shaped by the post-punk/New Wave era aesthetically than classic rock. In that context, Chic and possibly even Bee Gees might actually rate higher than Stones or Springsteen but that's a different discussion and I'm not sure the new tastemakers in rock-criticism are better than the old ones; I think there's a lot of annoying tendencies to downplay everything "earnest", "rootsy" and "honest" in favour of stuff that's more ironic or self-consciously artsy or "plastic" or "futuristic" or whatever...

That's pretty reductionist, and if that's the measuring stick for them as artists then perhaps you underappreciate both acts as well.

was the father to Justin Timberlake and Thicke at being a trick about it, thing though the Bee Gees actually wrote classic songs and there fans embraced it all.

Rolling Stones fans are dense and don't know there history.

Bee Gees kept it real and it ain't even close in terms of the songs, singing and impact.

Now, thanks to that, disco is seen as foreign and kind of exotic and we have generic "disco revival" songs charting on pop radio. Not to mention the most disappointing album of the 21st century, which people who hadnt given disco a serious thought in years (if ever) couldnt wait to start fawning over.
