"Ghostface"

So, Twelve Reasons was my biggest disappointment of the year. Not that it sucked but it just seemed like Ghost was shackled by the concept and the whole thing was more style than substance. His previous two albums were whatever, mostly due to beats and lack of direction. Working with the Rza again is not really on the horizon and the GhostDoom project remains in limbo.

Is Ghost done? If so, it's fine, he had a GOAT run but damn...

Dude held it down for the majority of his career though. I enjoyed The Brown Tape more than Twelve Reasons to Die. The production fit Ghost better. I haven't thoroughly enjoyed a Ghost project since Fishscale but every album he's released since has some gems that make me have to purchase his joints.

I probably disliked the recent records more than you did but this is where I am now.

I had really high hopes for this Adrian Younge joint but instead of being a ressurrection, it ends up sounding like a death knell.

I feel like if he got back with Rza, they could do something dope. Even if Rza isn't doing all the beats, he needs that direction.

I thought it was a VERY weak project outside of the live instrumentation exactly because of what you posted.

The best Ghostface is unhinged Ghostface, and it sounded like was working a corporate gig on the microphone.

I want to keep the faith but barring re-uniting with the Rza or him and Doom actually putting the album out and it being good...

It's not like Kanye is going to sign him and pay for some crazy production. It's not like he is going to end up working with Flylo or something either.

With this high concept shit having flopped, he will probably go back to yelling over Special Herbs leftovers and really bad Anthony Acid beats.

"Fishscale", "More Fish," (obviously) and "Big Doe Rehab" all came from recordings during the same period. Maybe even a track from "Apollo Kids."

I dunno, I still like all those albums quite a bit. I liked "12 Reasons to Die" too, though I haven't listened to it in a little bit. I still he's got something left in the tank and is capable of putting out very good albums.

and I'm straight. The ideal scenario is that we'd get a Wu-Tang album where they rap on these type of beats, but it seems impossible for all or most of them to be in the same room these days, so I'll gladly settle for 1-2 Wu members collaborating with other non-Wu affiliated MCs.

And that he'll drop it when he feels it is ready.

There are a few things that I NEED to hear happen on SC2.

He's gotta at LEAST get back to the flow he had on FISHSCALE.
That was the last album where he wasn't doing that basic ass flow
he's been rocking where it sounds like he's just reading off the paper.

Also, I'd like to hear some RZA stuff on the album
if he's gonna call it SC2.

It's only right.

he just sounds like he's gassed AND dejected from the 96-06 run:

1996: Ironman; platinum w/ semi-hit "All I Got Is You"
1997: Forever; 4x plat. lets not pretend he didn't begin to steal the show here
2000: SC; gold w/ semi-hit Che Che La Ghost
2000: The W; gold - fans are lukeworm Ghost murders this shit
2001: Bulletproof Wallets; went wood and was fucked by label unable to clear samples
2001: Iron Flag; gold, critical flop
2004: Pretty Toney; debuts @ 6 on the charts than falls off
2006: Fishscale; sells 250k in first week which landed him @ no.4 w/ strong Ne-Yo assisted single and than the label does nuthin to push the album after. that album is still not gold

that's a shit load of music/verses to record in a decade and all the critical love in the world isn't gunna mask that you were part of one of the greatest groups ever and 10 yrs later it seemed like white kids with degrees and a blog where the only ones who gave a shit

everything since has seemed phoned-in with jewels here and there.
More Fish, 8 Diagrams, Big Doe Rehab, Wizard of Poetry, Apollo Kids, 12 Reasons to Die, and all them Wu Block, Wu Massacre, Theadore Unit shits

If i was Ghost I'd be a lil uninspired after 15+ yrs of critical acclaim, past fame and a new rap landscape celebrating dudes who are 1/10th nice as you

Technically it's more of an Adrian Younge project than a GFK one, so Ghost's personality and content were definitely restrained, and his storytelling was overshadowed by the production. Nonetheless there were still some incredible songs on there...I think I'll listen to it right now actually. The Brown Tape is great too obviously.

But really, Ghost's last great album was Bulletproof Wallets imo. I never really loved Fishscale like that, I might even take Pretty Toney over Fishscale.

Ghostface is one of my favourites of all time. He was on an absolutely great run of albums/songs up to and including fishscale.

But I feel something is missing now. It's more paint by numbers gangster stories and I miss some of those curveball off topic gems (child's play, Maxine, the watch, the sun, good times, whip you with a strap etc) that made him a must listen mc..

I would love a resurgence from him.

The music was great. They just didn't come together...perhaps it was a little forced, perhaps Ghost felt a little burned out..etc.

Live Ghost seemed to be having fun with it when I saw em in NYC tho, one of the best live shows I saw this year (and I see like 50+) But on wax...something was off.

I don't think he fell off at all, it's just he's been doing side projects while we wait for SC2, and it's been too long. He was still the best part of Wu-Block, held down the record with Adrian Younge and still had good leftovers on Apollo Kids. With Ghostface you can kinda tell he be holding back until the real albums.

Maybe you missed the part where I said his last 3 solos have been whatever.

Add to that the fact that 12 Reasons has zero replay value and his disinterest in doing a Wu album, you might see why I am growing skeptical.
