"Is there musical subject matter you can't listen to anymore?"
Tue Nov-12-13 06:15 PM by forgivenphoenix

For instance 'Last Wordz' on 2Pac's Strictly For My N.I.G.G.A.Z. album used to be one of my favorite songs on there, mostly because Ice Cube blacks out on his verse.

but Cube includes this line that goes:

Fuck Pat Sajak, never did nothing for a nigga
On the trigger the zigga the zag the nickel the bag
The nigga the sag the forty four mag got you running like a f*g

When the album came out back in '93, I nor anyone else I knew were really that conscious of the harm of homophobic lyrical content, so I didn't stop listening to the song. i did think that the Cube kinda put some extra emotion onto that last line. i knew Cube was conscious but gangsta, but i didn't think of him as hateful.

As much as I love the verse, I just can't listen to it anymore.

I can't say that I don't nor ever have struggled with homophobia, but given recent changes in law and in the general culture, I don't want to listen to music that demeans people anymore.

There's alot of music that I either looked past the homophobia or careless speech or outright championed that I don't listen to altogether or have a revised opinion on. (KRS-ONE, Public Enemy, 2Pac, Common, A Tribe Called Quest)

Has anyone else changed their listening habits or stances on subject matter in music over time? Do you have a more 'liberal' stance towards musical lyrical content, believing that the artist deserves to have a platform to express his / her emotions, thoughts?

I still have this twinge of guilt that shows up in my mind. I start thinking, 'I wouldn't want anybody calling my Mom or sister a bitch', but then I'll notice the beat and keep listening.

So much for moral indignance....

many of the lyrics are indefensible, but the homophobia never bugged me.
maybe it's so over the top that i never think it means anything.

or maybe he's playing so many games with his identity
that you can never tell precisely when you hear marshal mathers,
when you hear eminem, and when you hear slim shady.

or maybe a part of me is still homophobe.

i dunno.

You mentioned homphobia and no, I don't like that in lyrics. At the same time, there are lots of Hip-Hop, dancehall and even punk-songs I dig that's quite homophobic. If I would stop listening to homophobic lyrics, should I stop listening to stuff with sexist lyrics as well? If I don't, am I not a hypocrite? And of course, there's always the moral problem with being a white guy in sweden listening to Hip-Hop that seems to promote violence in impoverished areas in USA. Should I stop listening to that too and only listen to "conscious" stuff?

Homophobia in particular is somewhat difficult because a couple of dancehall classics have EXTREMELY hateful lyrics that even straight up advocate murder and that's not cool; it's easy to block out if you don't speak patois but at the same time, it's there and not too difficult to get, it's an issue I have with the music and I can't really enjoy some songs anymore because they are just TOO vile

Difficult issues and I don't really have any rules for a specific subject-matter I can't listen to; I have to take it on a case-by-case level.

However, I don't want to listen to music that promotes racism and nazism; not a big sacrifice really but I like the first Skrewdriver-record (=before they became outspoken racists) and in spite of this, I don't even *want* to hear their later stuff when they went full-on racist. I know that those records are considered inferior to the debut even on musical terms but still... I have no interest in finding out...

And some of the national-socialist Black metal stuff I've heard like the polish band Graveland sounded pretty good to me but I can't bring myself to buy or even download or stream that shit-ESPECIALLY considering the large amount of hate-related race-crimes in eastern europe that bands like that and their mindset clearly help promote even if those views are very common in those countries; still, hateful music clearly doesn't help...

Of course, you could just as well argue that music with sexist lyrics help promote violence or at least a negative attitude towards women that is common throughout the world; again, you can't put the blame solely on the music but it sure as fuck doesn't help. I guess I'm a hypocrite in that regard though and obviously a part of the patriarchal and sexist society since I don't find it as offensive as racism/nazism or homophobia or whatever...

back then it was rare to hear it so blatant and loud. i mean nowadays it ain't a biggie however in the mid 80's until the late 90's it was like a wow effect and it was a affective tool by these pimp labels to have artists say any and everything and alot of those acts didn't believe what they were saying.

look Ice Cube is one of the best rappers ever however the cat in real life is more Will Smith than you can ever imagine

it's not really a problem for me with modern music b/c I've largely stayed away from the kind of stuff most posters are writing about, but my interest in old music, and specifically old Black music, has led my collection to include quite a few coon songs and vaudeville/minstrel songs, as well as songs by white guys which are clearly racist in a modern context (if not often outright hateful in the same way as many of the lyrics referenced by other posters).

It can make me uncomfortable, though, sure, but the lack of cultural & chronological proximity to the context in which those records were made certainly makes the impact of that negativity FEEL different than listening to contemporary music.
