Really not a good trolling attempt at all. Mildly funny for the "okay to be a hater" comment, but even that is dreadfully cliche.

hip hop was a subculture,
and initially all subcultures guard their ranks aggressively.

so there was a reaction to hip hop going pop.
you really can't talk about vanilla ice without talking about hammer, too.

ppl, i think, were cool with hammer initially...
but felt put off by how big "u can't touch this" became
and jumped ship when 2 legit 2 quit became so large
(even though everybody reading this did the 2 legit 2 quit hand motion
when they read the words.)

the vanilla ice backlash hit around the same time, if i remember correctly.
the fact that it was discovered he was a fraud didn't help.

honestly, if the same artists did the same thing circa 2000,
nobody would have as much of a problem with it. they could have had a ja rule
type run.

but at the time they hit, hip hop wanted to maintain their own identity--
seperate from pop (read as: white) fans.

so... they're punch lines.

although i do find it strange that ppl still LIKE those songs
when they come on during an old school set. they're in the
pop cannon now. they'll be with us as long as DJ's exist.

Vanilla Ice was considered "aiight" while he was on Ichiban Records. That first album "Hooked" which spawned "Ice Ice Baby" was almost unlistenable like most of Ichiban's offerings at the time (i.e. MC Breed's first album). The song would come on, we would dance to it and most of us knew the words, such was life. It wasn't until SBK bought out Vanilla Ice's contract, repackaged him as a Hammer contender complete with shiny suits and that ridiculous hairdo, and paid to have him in rotation EVERYWHERE that the backlash began.

To this day, I'm mad I ever sold that tape ("Hooked" on Ichiban), and that original pressing of "Play that Funky Music" w/"Ice Ice Baby" as the b-side back in 2003. Granted, I got $30 for the tape and quite a bit more for the 12", but I think they would be worth far more today.

because that White Boy could at least dance. he was aight and a Marketing tool, however he served his purpose and in truth Hip Hop always had a Spinal tap play on words and image

also Pop, being hardcore, concienous rappers, etc... are all blurred now so why not him?

truth is without him then no EMinem because you needed an Ice to get a Em and put things into perspective.

I was 12 when "Ice Ice Baby" played on tv.
Most of us really liked him.
And I grew up in a Black/Latino neighborhood.
I, personally, wasn't a fan. My shit was Tribe and P.E., and heavy metal like Metallica/Megadeth.

No skills at all in an era filled with skills made him stick out like a sore thumb. Now he would be Riff Raff and dudes would co-sign him and have him on their mixtape. Back then dudes weren't afraid to say shit is wack I don't fuck with it.

Jesters are cool as long as they stay in their lane and don't mind us laughing with AND at them(see Flavor Flav).
Posers get it much worse.
