Elzhi can come party with your for like $10K, or even shout you out (and your city!) on the album haha.

The CD collection with all his albums/mixtapes would be cool though.

Seems like a way to squeeze money out of his fans. Just do it like everyone else does, let your music speak for itself...if it's a good product then you will get sales and tours. I just think its a little weak when artist on his level do a kick starter. The prizes are a little conceded too, who wants to spend $175 to FaceTime with Elzhi? From a true Elzhi fan, this is disappointing.

That's how I see this. Contribute so he can make dope music. There are options to pay $1, $5, & $10, which if you're a fan, should be what you pay anyway. Some of the prizes might be too expensive, but the basic idea isn't.

But I'm honestly not a big enough fan to spend $250 to get on stage with him. That and the tour of Detroit would be epic, altho I wouldnt spend what hes asking. I would pay half tho ($125 for two tickets and getting on stage with him). In the end, I'll probably go with the $10 donation.

I'm cool with buying an album before I hear it from my favorite artists.

But paying to help it get made, and then paying again to buy it? Seems like that is a little out of my responsibility as a fan.

I hear artists say "if you want the music you love, you have to support it" which I agree with. But I support by buying the music, going to the shows, putting friends on to it, etc.

Paying to have it MADE though? I mean as a fan it feels like, do I have to support an artist by buying them instruments too? I realize that analogy isn't perfect, but I'm just saying that's how it comes off sometimes.

you're essentially just preordering the album. If you contribute at least $10, that includes a digital copy of the album when it comes out. Obviously you can pay more if you're interested in that other stuff or are a super fan. If he doesn't reach the $ goal by the prescribed date, then you get your money back.

Hmmm...

The kickstarter thing has become really tricky. There are so many artists just doing pre-sales on their site with the same type of packages.

Doing it on kickstarter (with a defined amount) he runs the risk of A. Not making his goal B. Being seen as asking for handouts C. Possibly having to explain where the money is going if he surpasses his goal.

tricky

generally if it doesn't get funded, that just means not enough people wanted it
which means you would have made an album at a loss

explaining where your extra money goes shouldn't be a problem if you offer smart stretch goals like most people do.

Yea but then what?

If it doesn't get funded then what should/will he do?

I mean I could be wrong but there is literally no cost to make the album. So theoretically the shit is done.

So he doesn't make his goal and he has a finished album..

Is he gonna just drop it? go get a job?

As opposed to doing the SAME EXACT THING but on elzhi.com with no specified goal amount. He could use topspin to manage the tier structure and still limit the number of high priced packages. The difference being that no one is in his pocket whether it is a success or not.

if it doesn't get funded, it just looks like he'll either just let it sit
or put it out and just not promote it or go on tour apparently.

I'm all for paying an artist for his/her work but not beforehand. If I'm a fan of your music I will gladly pay for it. I bought the Run Your Jewels album even though it was a free download because I loved that record and I wanted a physical copy. I get trying to come up with creative ways to survive in this current climate but this just seems desperate to me.

I don't mind the El is doing one, but his team really stumbled in the rewards department.

Most folks aren't gonna pay past $30, so you need to have the 20-50 stuff be really good so you can reach said goal by getting a bunch of them instead of relying on the bigger ones that most won't buy.

That said, he will prolly make his goal, and I'm gonna buy the 25 dollar one with the deluxe CD.

The Skype one is really ridiculous, that isn't a good idea...especially for $175.

The fan experience ones are really dope tho, plus him doing it in different cities is kinda cool too. Someone in his camp should make a web-series following the winner in each city.

The last Elmatic vinyls is way too damn high, maybe if they had added shirts & the CD's it'd make more sense. Or is the Vinyl rare and I just don't know it?

The Detroit Tour is a great idea, but WAY TOO HIGH. If the price was lower I could see a bunch of people who have never seen Detroit hopping on this....but 5k is like a couple of vacations to a normal person.

Kinda surprised he didn't give an option to buy a verse from him, he could easily get 500+ if that were an option imo.

and finally NEW ELZHI SOON YAY!!!!!

I seriously doubt it. This is ridiculous.

And those that fork over the big bucks to hang with him or talk to him on skype...I couldn't think of a more loser thing to do. I don't know if its more embarrassing to have 0 backers on those scenarios or see that they have a backer in that regard and picture the creepy exchange between an obsessed stan that shells it out to hang with an underground emcee.

Even though Slum Village is a special group, I don't think they ever really sold big numbers. And I'm sure Elzhi's cut out of the big piece of pie wasn't all that. I wouldn't doubt he does "ok" when factoring in tour and merch, but I'd say if he came to new orleans, he probably would have maybe 20-30 people here. Factor in all the downloading, etc...I think its valid he hasn't made 25K on album sales of any project he has done, ever. On solo stuff, not sure if any of his individual albums have even made $25K in just sales (much less his cut of that). Its no desrespect to Elzhi...love the dude's art, its just the fact of underground hip hop and where it fits into popularity and sales. $25K is not measly, lol.

I don't think dude would have stayed in SV as long as he did as a de facto unpaid intern. I'm pretty sure they were paying him *something*.

edit: "’Cause honestly I haven’t even got paid in full on the album yet" see http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2010/07/elzhi-slum-villages-lost-one-breaks-his-silence/

Key clause is "in full" (meaning he got paid something, just not everything he was owed). And that's only for one album. That also is apparently not the "straw that broke the camel's back". According to El, the beef started when he got new management.

at the minimum, he's asking people to actually support him and not say they did when they really downloaded the album for free. if you don't like elzhi, or are lukewarm, wait until the album drops. but if you're a fan, $10 shouldn't be a problem.

In response to Reply # 39

And Elzhi has enough ability that can be objectively measured (use of internal rhyme, flow, etc) that someone could make a GOAT argument for him. LL calls himself the GOAT and regardless of LL's longevity, I can confidently say that I think Elzhi can outrap LL. I'm sure LL is some people's GOAT. Again, it's all subjective.

After that, it gets a little weird.

I love the merch itself, and the fact that it's unique to the Kickstarter campaign. I like the ideas of signed CDs/vinyl. The idea of a book with handwritten lyrics is dope as hell. The VIP stage experience is a dope idea. These are essentially pre-orders, and that's fine with me. It's past $250, but the idea of the signed lyrics is also dope - I can see a huge fan really appreciating that.

The video game and skype session ideas are pretty weird. There are literally artists out there who just give their Skype names out on Twitter to really build with fans. I think the Elmatic vinyls are priced too high, even if they're in limited quantity (and I like the album too). Not feeling the listening party joints either. Everything above $500 is pretty ridiculous to me. But honestly, if he sells even one of those things, he's probably fine. The Detroit tour is decent, but I agree with someone else in that I think it's overpriced.

It does seem weird that an artist of Elzhi's stature is doing this. On the business end, I get it - why not get free money when you can, and get stuff paid for before you do it? But there's definitely a possibility for hurting the brand, as seen in here.

I hope he reaches his goal though, I plan on supporting it, and I look forward to hearing the new album.

I wonder how much he would charge for a show through his booking agent or something. Specifically, if that Kickstarter initiative is less than what he would usually book a gig through. If so, and there's not a venue stipulation, it's possible that someone just bought that instead of booking him conventionally?
