"EPMD Legacy: What does it mean to you?"

Growing up I was a huge EPMD fan. I had all of the albums and of course their spin off artist from Redman, Das EFX, K-Solo & of course Keith Murray. I feel they are legends in the game for many reasons and a Top 10 Hip Hop Group. My question/s to the board/lesson is: (are)

1. What is the legacy of EPMD to you?(to Hip Hop)
2. Do you feel they should have a Documentary like Tribe? They had the drama.
3. Where do they rank on the all time list of groups?
4. Where does E. Sermon rank as a producer?
5. Random EPMD thought or story..

Peace

Tony

...that came after them.

>1. What is the legacy of EPMD to you?(to Hip Hop)

They were absolutely pioneers in terms of their sound, the rhyming technique, the overall feel of their music. They weren't the first to do the pass the mic back-and-forth rhyming style, but they were certainly the best at it at the time, and still might be the best.

>2. Do you feel they should have a Documentary like Tribe? They
>had the drama.

Yes, very much so. I've thought it since I first heard about the Tribe doc. They certainly had the drama, but the problem is that I'm not sure how willing they'd be to openly speak on it. They certainly haven't said anything of that much substance since the first time that they get back together in 1997. I think they've sorta spoken on it on a Beef DVD, but that's about it. I'd like to see them talk about the situation at the time honestly.

>3. Where do they rank on the all time list of groups?

Certainly no lower than #3. Probably #2. I could make a case for #1.

>4. Where does E. Sermon rank as a producer?

I know it's been disputed how much of the EPMD shit he actually did, but his late '80s through mid 1990s work is pretty fucking impeccable. He's comfortably in the top 20, maybe top 15.

>5. Random EPMD thought or story..

Said it quite a few times on here: the first time that hip-hop "died" for me was the first time EPMD broke up. And honestly, it probably hasn't been as fun for me since. And I kinda wish they'd never gotten back together. "Back in Business" and "Out of Business" we're both good enough albums, but they stil lack the p, I don't know, authenticity or passion of the first four. And every successive time they "get back together" or launch another reunion tour, it just feels fake. And yeah, their last album "We Mean Business", was so bad that it hurt my feelings.

their legacy well they were a precur to the west coast sound where Roger Troutman is concearned and that alone makes them lethal as they had there own bag 1)

they were better and more important than Tribe, however too black and remember No Cross over they came along right before cross over was king in Hip Hop. a bit too black, however for the Hood they deserve a documentary. 2)

as far as groups go they gotta be in the top 8 easily IMO. 3)

E Sermon is a top Producer of Hip Hop and for all the love timberland gets he couldn't hold the Green Eye Bandit's eye drops, real talk. Sermon is a top ten Hip Hop Producer IMO and better than Kayne as well. 4)

i dig the fact that they always could re invent themselves and yet keep it all rooted in what they did and they also evolved and brought in others. they were Outkast without the fanfare, had the groove, flow and vibe and own idenity. you always knew them cats. 5)

mistermaxxx R.Kelly, Michael Jackson,Stevie wonder,Rick James,Marvin Gaye,El Debarge, Barry WHite Lionel RIchie,Isleys EWF,Lady T.,Kid creole and coconuts,the crusaders,kc sunshine band,bee gees,jW,sd,NE,JB

They were the seminal group. I'd say their first 3 albums are highlights.

>2. Do you feel they should have a Documentary like Tribe? They
>had the drama.

No...the unsung episode was more than enough. They won't talk about the major issues.

>3. Where do they rank on the all time list of groups?

At least top five.

>4. Where does E. Sermon rank as a producer?

I thought his work after EPMD was excellent. Especially the Funkorama remix. Within EPMD, it's really not clear what he did, and what Parrish did. I think it's common knowledge they didn't do any production on the first and arguably best record.

>5. Random EPMD thought or story..

I have the EPMD greatest hits disc...what a crappy production this was. Instead of getting the original versions, they re-recorded the songs from the first two albums before they were on Def Jam. It's not good. And then they included You Gots Ta Chill '99 instead of the original. Disappointing. But, it was at least better than that BS We Mean Business that it was bundled with. That's the biggest knock on EPMD. They have put out 7,8 records together. The last couple of records have been really lackluster to say the least.

One of the dopest duos of all-time. Too bad they let money ruin a good
thing during their peak.

>2. Do you feel they should have a Documentary like Tribe? They

They def should have a doc even though it won't be as largely appreciated
as the ATCQ joint

>3. Where do they rank on the all time list of groups?

In the 6-10 range. Easily top 10 IMO.

>4. Where does E. Sermon rank as a producer?

In the 11-15 range. I haven't made that list in the longest.

>5. Random EPMD thought or story..

"Chill", not "You Gots to Chill" is the greatest EPMD song ever recorded.
