""do i ever cross your mind' by B Mcknight and Meshelle's 'Outside your d..."

Both songs are incredible. I'm wondering what the relationship between these two songs is in terms of publishing and credits. I remember wooing many a lady with 'outside your door' and always loved the melodic piano during the verse. B Mcknight chopped the last half of the melody, second varation and looped it. Both songs are incredible to me.

Question is how the money got divied up and possibly how we think it should be. Specifically how much Meshelle got from it and what we think she should've got.

Outside your door:

Do I ever cross your mind:

goddamn that McKnight tune is timeless.

I thought dude was okay. He had his lane and that was cool. But when he jacked this song and had the temerity to lie about it? Whatever respect I had was gone.

Might be one of those times when you steal something without realizing. Happens to me sometimes....something in your head and you forget that it actually exists somewhere. George Harrison described this when he defended 'My sweet lord'.

I'm surprised something wasn't done retroactively cause that song's been used in movies and stuff. We're talking big bucks for that publishing. Meshelle (or whoever owns her publishing) missed a big payday. Can't imagine why it wasn't pursued.

I wrote a song once, played it for someone, only to have them tell me that the main riff was a straight rip from Tracy Chapman's chord riff from "Fast Car" - as soon as they said it, I heard it. But I had *no* idea when I wrote it... thought I'd hit on something cool and catchy (not that it's an especially innovative riff to begin with).

Still, when you have a major label artist recording w/so many people around him, you'd think *someone* would have said: "Uh...."

“When that song came out—you know, I used to beg my record company to
put out, “Outside Your Door.” It’s like, ’that’s the single man, put it out.’ But
they ignored me. Then brother Brian—just straight up took my shit. You can’t
cry over spilled milk—you just let it go—’cause I—I’ll keep writing and I’ll write
many other songs, so that’s cool.”

then he fell the fuck off.

all that talent and little to show for it.

he may well have a better voice than meshell, but her music is a damn sight better than his.

it's not even close.

that kind of reasoning doesn't mean much to me, in any case.

I think his feeling about McKnight is kinda like his feeling about Ursher: He's basically a tired turkey, but he has managed to make the moves to maintain a viable career so God bless him for that because we need more Black R&B stars to fight back the interlopers.

He talked about how he liked Brian because he showed he had a funky sense of humor.

But if I recall, that was what actually won him over to Brian's side to begin with, because before that he said dude was whitebread.

So after "If You're Ready To Learn," maxxx championed him for a few months, then went back to talking about how tired he is.

Yeah... I did overlook that episode. But I'm pretty sure maxxx was no big fan of McKnight because I remember arguing with him about it, and I tried to raise the point that Kellz is supposedly a fan and good friend of B.Mac.

very talented cat. you outta see his live from brazil dvd where he threw done. dude plays classical and jazz like you make Mac and cheese and kool aid from scratch.

from a talent perspective not many acts can hang with him. scary singer, his biggest flaw is keeping a hit and also being late on things.

he is one of the best acts over the past 25 years, however to many he is a 90's thing. great live act. he can play.

he would wipe the floor on meshall musically speaking and she knows it

at least it was.
the idea of the producer making the entire track and then handing it over to the artist
is a hip hop thing.

before that, it meant what you just described.

Quincy is the one that told MIke to redo the vox
on the lady in my life over and over again and to dig deeper
until he pulled out the best take.

Quincy is the one that had Mike sing in lower registers on OTW.

Quincy is the one that said Billie jean had to have a unique sonic quality
in order to be on "thriller"

everything you're describing is a producers job.

Quincy didn't do a thing in the studio. arrangements were the same charts for 30 plus years. truth is Rod Temperton and Jerry Hey along with MJ really produced those records.

Q had the team and carried that power. however he didn't do a thing.

James Ingram felt the same way and i ain't going into this on here.

...people like Quincy Jones and Phil Spector to use another example pretty much became big names in their own right which wasnt really the case with other producers working like that. I mean, none of the Atlantic or stax or Phillysoul producers are big names like that in spite of their input and you could take a guy like Willie Mitchell who was amazing and did the Al Green stuff, hes not a household name like Quincy but only known amongst music nerds.

Basically, people like Quincy and Phil Spector earlier were extremely good at self/promotion and hyping themselves up which most producers didn\t do, instead they chose to play the background and be behind the scenes. I don\t think that should be neglected in terms of why they are perceived differently...

Hit and miss on the charts? Sure, but she hasn't been aiming for those for years...

Hit and miss in quality? Not. A Chance. Her least interesting album (musically) is her *first* and even *that's* a classic - she doesn't have a single snoozer in her catalog.

It's not even fair trying to compare the two. Meshell's a complete artist. Brian's a talented guy and good performer with a middle-of-the-road catalog and pretty perfunctory career. Nothing wrong with that, but he's not on Meshell's playing field *at all* (and I usually don't compare folks like that).

and she wasn't on that label as a tax write off either. her first two albums had commerical promise and videos, pr, etc.. it wasn't like she wasn't trying.

she ain't got no catelog as a songwriter touching Brian Mcknight. call him whatever you want, he still is a better instrumentalist and better all around artist than her period.

He can Sing her under a table, out write her and is more versatile. aside from Bass what else can she hang with him on again?

it took years before i could even listen to McNight' version without a feeling of disgust toward him. chics used to LOVE that shit too, and i would always fuck up the moment, soundin all bitter like "nah fuck that, this fool bit Meshelle' shit."

it would be straight bullshit to try and say "...Cross Your Mind" aint a dope ass song, but man it took me a while to get past that shit to the point i could just sit back and enjoy it.

If Brian would've credited her, this shit wouldn't be a big deal...

But the nigga played stupid and ignorant. Foul shit.

Acting like he came up with the shit himself.

Just give the credit, and no one can say anything.

But the puss-ass nigga stole it.

With all that said...I think they're both very talented, but Meshell moves me way more. But Brian is no slouch. He got skills.

Just give credit where its due. Mofos always wanna deny credit to the people who created their shit.

Princeguy reviews:

"No pretentiousness.

No pompous re-interpretations.

Sometimes, a movie is just a movie. You work hard for your money.

The decision is yours.

See and enjoy what YOU like."

Taylor Dayne to his Taylor Shift. bottom line Brian Mcknight won and pulled a thug gangsta move off of one song which only sore eye Meshall stans cry about.

believe me nobody is crying Argentina over it.

aside from her bass playing and instrumentation versatility at times, she was never in his league.

outside her fans nobody gives two straws and a shake about her

fair enough. i don't think he should have necessarily given her songwriting credit but if he got the idea from her, he should be honest in saying that.

or u must just think other people are, so u 'play dumb' and change the subject.

you said she made it a hot intro, when in fact it was NOT a fuckin intro. that piano melody (that ya boy bit the shit out of) played throughout the entire 5 minute plus song.

i mean he didn't even wait long enough for Meshelle' song to fade from memory a little before he ran wit that shit.
