I always considered Parental Advisory to be a precursor to OutKast.

LA was very hands on with TLC
Kast not so much
the battles they had to wage with the first two albums are legendary
especially surrounding elevators
LA really didnt really become hands on until Stankonia once Dre and Big starting taking full control of their musical direction

in the end no...LA did not approach the two groups the same

I always thought that BBD was the precursor to TLC.

Other than the LaFace/ONP/ATL connection, I don't see it (the TLC ---> Outkast thing, that is).

when, in the VH1 movie, LA Reid described them as "a female New Edition...but with a rapper"....I was like, um, so you mean they're BBD?

They set the bar for all female R&B groups and transitioned nicely into pop without necessarily having to go "pop".

and even though they had issues with one another, they continued to record together (and occasionally separate) without having to fire and hire new members. Plus, sans the business side of things, I think they truly cared about one another, and it showed.

TLC was La Reids answer to the East Coast Family . He took the baggy clothes look and gave it to 3 teenage looking females. Everyone thought they were like 14-15 when they came out. Dallas Austin produced alot of that East Coast family stuff (dont forget he made Iesha for ABC).

They werent a major precursor to anyone because they abandoned that style and look after only one album.

The precursor to Kast is a little more complicated. I was here in the A in the early 90s. Atlanta was coming out of that booty shake only and was branching off into real hip hop. That new hip hop had a major influence and it was from one place The Bay. The Bay (especially Oakland) and Atl have always had a certain kinship. When folk come out here from Oakland they say it has a vague familiar feel and vice versa. In the early 90s, Too Short was damn near a adopted King in atl (him moving here shortly after cemented that for awhile)...

Atl liked that fast booty shake music but we also liked that thick syrupy bass heavy thump. That slow funk. Folk like Ant Banks, Short and 4tay was coming wit that at the time. But it was also that buppie rap that was breaking through. That Hiero. Think of Kast and you will realize their major influence is that playa shit (Big Boi) and that spacy introspective Souls of Mischief eclectic sonic shit (Dre). Through in some of that vintage Atlantas own 70s-80s FUNK that Brick dazzband/Cameo Funk (from Bricks frontman son Sleepy Brown) and there you have the blueprint of Kast.

Not no fuckin TLC

------------------------------
Now lets take a moment to ponder the depth, brilliance, and emotional gravity of Mr Reds above statement.

and while alot of what you say is true, it also ain't far fetched that some of the Imagery of TLC was also used on Outkast.

i wasn't talking the music. however Orgainzed Noise fit and style backs up waht you say.

TOO Short went to the ATL because of pressure not all about choice was the word out back in the day.

anyway Outkast imagery was a certain way at first then what happen later.

Left eye's vibe and style fit well with what Outkast had visually more so than T Boz and Chilli.

you can make your point without being so vulgar about it and also can see a certain connection there and also La and babyface sorta had all of there acts a certain way.
