Swedish singer/songwriter/rapper Neneh Cherry burst onto the scene in the late 80s/early 90s with her genre-busting album Raw Like Sushi and the hit "Buffalo Stance". She will release a new album in early 2014 via Smalltown Supersound. It's her first solo album in over 16 years. It was produced by Four Tet, her musical collaborators are RocketNumberNine, and the album features a guest appearance from Robyn. According to a press release, the album was made over five days, recording and mixing two songs per day. "It was a liberating experience, not endlessly trying to fiddle with the music, re-recording hundreds of times. These days it's easy to create any effect or sound on a computer, it is much harder to get the rawness I think we've achieved," said Cherry. Cherry collaborated with jazz group the Thing last year for The Cherry Thing.
The great Neneh Cherry’s 1989 debut album Raw Like Sushi broke new ground in cosmopolitan rap snarl and helped make M.I.A. possible. She hasn’t released a solo album since 1996′s Man, though she did get an Album Of The Week last year for The Cherry Thing, the covers collection that she did with the Scandinavian jazz group the Thing. Next year, she’ll give us Blank Project, her first solo album in nearly two decades. Four Tet produced the entire thing, and Cherry recorded it with the London jazz-head duo Rocketnumbernine. The album’s title track, which Cherry shared this morning, is a sparse and intense piece of electro-jazz, and it sounds tough as fuck. Listen to it and check out the album’s tracklist below.
01 “Across The Water” 02 “Blank Project” 03 “Naked” 04 “Spit Three Times” 05 “Weightless” 06 “Cynical” 07 “422″ 08 “Out Of The Black” (Feat. Robyn) 09. “Dossier” 10. “Everything”
Blank Project is out 2/26 on Smalltown Supersound.
