between this and that last track - I kind of see the potential in what she's doing, but think that what she needs to pull it off (a bad ass producer who is willing to edit, chop, and just plain say "no") will never materialize... because who is going to tell Lauryn Hill "no"?

In a weird way, I'd like her to get with someone like Meshell, someone who has mellowed over the years but who probably "gets" Lauryn's anger and worldview ...

But at least she's making music again, and it's interesting and provocative enough that I'll keep checking for it...

want that put into a nice little song for the consumerist masses... probably weren't paying attention to what she was rapping about.

shit is poigant targeted emotion which is a direct reflection of the path which she has chosen for over a decade now. if you haven't gotten the message by this point.... who cares, it's not for you.

but to call it wasted talent when she's doing, in a way which nobody else is doing please. this isn't just some hop on a hot beat and spit a verse to get them feeling you again. knowing her process it took a lot to get the piece of music we have here. a lot of talent. you remove the rapping and the production is great. separate the rapping from the production and she's killing it. she ripped an ism run for two long verses plus chorus' while maintaining a broad and yet simple concept to paint a picture from her perspective of the world. motherfuckers don't rap like that no more.

it's the combination of music with the rapping and the who is doing the rapping that makes this hard to digest for folk. but fuck the dumb this is exactly the type of shit we need more artists doing. perhaps out of that would come something more tolerable for general ears. but for mine... gimme more!!!

But the runs you speak of me making me think she's channeling her anger at a lot of philosophies and the "zeitgeist" feeling that is confusing the world she sees around her. Maybe i'm completely off, but even though she's not getting to a single "point" the mood and vibe and energy of it, combined with her beating the concept of that on the head is really cool to me.

I think she's got a good "album" in her, but like others have said, she needs to get with a producer who will tell her no, and help her focus on writing songs with that amount of passionate energy to say something. Because thats what we all love about Lauryn at the end of the day, is that she speaks from an honest though provoking place thats relatable in anthemic ways with melodies that kill.

Either way, I like her recent output and definitely think shes a darkhorse sleeper for a crazy comeback if she ever gets things in order.

I used to carry the Miseducation album sleeve around in my backpack that's how big of a fan I was.

This shit sounds like a spoken word artist that decided they want to rap and 99.9% of the time this is how they sound just putting words together all fast. While the words are dope it gets lost in translation. I need her to ditch "trying" to innovate and go left and just start in the middle of being Lauryn Hill a la the time between Miseducation and that unplugged album and build from there.

I made it to 2 minutes but had it not been Lauryn Hill I would've shut it off after 30 seconds. She's angry, we get it, but come on now.

I want to talk to Jesus, my mama, and Marvin Gaye when I get to heaven.

As for the discussion above, I applaud her for trying to say something. But the fact remains, if the message isn't delivered in a quality format (in other words, in the form of a listenable, good song), it does little to no good, evidenced by the fact that none of us in here could get past the minute mark for the most part.

Unlistenable.

she is a spokesperson. a minister. an educator.

she is not here to entertain us. so if we're not entertained by this - that's the point. the point is to preach at us about __. and not in a palatable, pleasant format. it's just str8, uncut preaching.

i dunno why she bother rapping her diatribes/sermons/speeches/essays. she should just get a pulpit and a mic and go at it.

Again, I don't see her purpose.

Irony? Where's that get her?

If she wants to preach, then preach! I'm all about her message and mostly agree with it. But if only you and two other people can bear listening to the platform she presented it on, where does it get her? IF she wants to spread a message, she's gotta do better.

i think she should stop rapping and stop moving in entertainment circles altogether. b/c she's not entertaining.

i've been through w/her since she made me wait for THREE FUCKING HOURS to see her perform back in 2004. and when she finally graced us w/her presence she ran through lighting-speed versions of a couple of her songs, then gave a damned 45 minute sermon about art and entertainment her not being an artist or entertainer or whatever the fuck crazy shit she was on. i stayed through it b/c the venue was THICK w/tension by then and i wanted to see if the maybe 1/3 of the audience who were still in the bldg by then (it'd been sold out) were going to throw things at the stage or light chairs on fire or what. but after the sermon she went back to unrecognizable renditions of her solo work from Miseducation and a few Fugees favorites and that was it. the whole time she bitched about the sound and wanted the band to play faster. basically the same show she's been giving for almost 10 yrs now.

i'm through.

fuck you.

of her views/message, cause I really don't. I guess what I meant is that I can always appreciate a Liberal mind and an agent for change, though I think she is mostly too extreme for my tastes. Top that off with an unlistenable song and I'm cool, too.

I can't speak to her tour issues but that's pretty poor as well.

Music isn't supposed to be this uplifting reaffirming thing all the time. It's supposed to have its heavy and sometimes unbearable moments. That's a reflection of life. That may not be what some want right now but it is from an honest place. Wish her brighter moments in life and maybe will reflect that as well. But right now this totally makes sense for where she's at.

It is easy to dismiss it as "garbage" because it doesn't sound like the Lauryn we once were accustomed to listening to. I'll even go as far to say that this song didn't do it for me personally, but I can't deny that Ms. Hill is still doing her thing on her terms and for that I can respect it. If she really cared what people thought of what she's releasing now, I'm sure it would sound much different and more accessible to the masses. But as a song called "Consumerism", I can assume that this was not her intention, and the people who can't dig it, it wasn't intended for them anyway. I'd listen to this before a lot of the trash that gets a pass because it's dance/club/party friendly. (Only I wouldn't expect to hear something like this at a club or party, since it's obviously not that kind of song.)

went to a show last year with her and nas and left early because of her blabbering. I found it odd that she didn't come out for If I Ruled the World, probably cause she is an asshole.

I remember around the Miseducation era, some proto-hipster anti-"intellectual rap" critics would reduce Lauryn's rhymes to her just rapping really fast and piling up lots of "-tion" nouns... L-Boogie's rapping was a lot more than just that, though.

WAS.

Would be jerking off to it smh

Did you really expect her to come back with
That Thing part 2??

Did you really want it??

She was way off that by the time Unplugged
dropped.

The hate that this track is getting is a combination
of racism, sexism, and guck boys trapped
in 99.

Shit, Ms Hill is SPITTING again! And both
tracks have been dope to me but I
never viewed her as a pop star.

Honest to god if this were Aseop Rock/ El p/
or someone similar it would be hailed as
creative.

What do you guys really want from her?

Miseducation part 2??

Collabo album with Elvis fucking Costello?

you're making it sound like there was nothing substantive on miseducation or among its singles (FAR from the case) and that a drop down to something utterly worthless is the only alternative.

her lyrics are not exactly gil scott heron, mostly just a bunch of angry doom and gloom stuff lazily strung together over a beat that sounds like it came off a fisher price keyboard.

57. "this is better then what Lupe is trying to do..."
In response to Reply # 0

I think Lupe Fiasco or Kanye are better comparisons when i comes to the "if a male rapper did this" argument. I could honestly see Lupe doing this and not being called crazy. Hill is addressing issues we haven't heard a female MC address in sometime. This is far from her best material. Whatever message she wants to express is lost in the amount of words stuffed into the song much like Lupe's mix tapes or random rant tracks. However whenever Lupe does these type of tracks on a single topic its praised like a major accomplishment. Indie male rap artists get the same praise.

I just think it's funny when you look at this work compared to a work like Yeesus, which IMO is gibberish. Im talking about the random rhymes that Kanye and his producer admitted where put together in a couple of weeks and it pretty much sounds like that content-wise. The production is great on most of that album. Of course he is "rapping" much slower than Hill but what the fuck is his message (Racism exists, I fuck hoes, commercialism is making us slaves, look at my fashion/and cars BS, i'm the greatest hated). Hill isn't getting side tracked on these tracks. New Slaves was lucky the production saved its lack of authenticity.

Much of the flack Hill is getting is due to her piss pour attitude about paying taxes, being forced to release this material, and being a brainwashed angry black woman. When the material sounds like nothing she has released before, the easy explanation is that she has lost her mind or rushed into the studio made up these track in a few minutes in spite of the label.

Perception matters a lot in hip hop. Had she released this material without being "forced" or then stating that the first track wasn't ready to release more people would take the time to hear the music. Perhaps it's too late, the crazy woman narrative and her past antics have overtaken our trust in her as an artist. People feel like they don't have time for this from her, not now.

At least when Bob did it, it was new. And he had an electric guitar to make him sound good.

And he was on beat.

Lauryn has been outrhythmed by Bob Dylan. Think about that.

Unless I'm too dumb now and being off beat was the point and it's a provocative and genius move to not conform to the standards of the evil corporate minds conspiring to. . . no.

No, she's just horribly off beat and it sounds like a train wreck.

When she was spitting like this on Unplugged it was a bit more palatable because the only thing that was competing with her vocals was her struggle strumming of the guitar. And her doing double duty of playing and rhyming probably forced her to have to pace her delivery, which was easier on the ears. On here, she sounds at odds with the music. Which may be intentional. But it's doing her no favors if she truly wants people to decipher and digest the message she's promoting.

I do agree that there were some dope rhythmic runs on here. So I personally don't think the "song" is completely rubbish. But I pray she doesn't try to release an album were every track is of this ilk. It'd be like if Heavy Mental was composed of songs that all sounded like the title track.

the folks who've had some degree of success on that drumless track stuff (not a fan of this approach in heavy doses usually anyway) are laid back gravely types like Ka/RocMarc or maybe a Jay Elec mystic steez.

Lauryn is doing some kind of breakneck-speed, angry, industry-scarred spastic word-association thing that would be even more awkwardly pronounced without music behind it.

You got a taste of that spoken-word-stilted-flow-on-speed in some of the more rap-inclined tracks on Unplugged but it's gotten way worse since with her shifty/frenetic/loud/messy reinterpretations of her old songs backed by that big wack band.

I don't strongly dislike these records though. I just want her to rap on beat again...
or at least rap to some beats that are a lil more laid back, because she's rapped
off beat a lot in the past, even on the unplugged joint white strumming her guitar,
and I really enjoyed her rapping on there.

you like 'songs'
oh the precious 'song' it makes everything so much better.
meh
song is just away to reign in a rapper.
quite happy with an unbridled Lauryn trying to focus on her strength.
oh i know 'her strength is songs'
meh
she's always been a much better rapper than her songs. now she's going for it.

and no this her at her best rapping, or even necessarily a great song, but if you like rapping it shows just as much promise as 100 Deaths for an artist that made a name for themselves in another lane.

above and beyond all of that pretending like these are released in earnest as pop consumable singles is just so laughable, as is trying to hold them up to those standards.

so yeah... meh

In response to Reply # 110

I still get into deep arguments over El-P, my most anticipated LP for the fall is going to be pretty much just rhythm less guitar feedback, and my fav rap album this year pretty much had no hooks (Earl). Half the things I listen to on a daily basis can barely count as 'songs' but they ALL have a technical ability to it. Even if its just a drum beat and sampled distortion, you can tell they were like "Ok, this sounds cool...lemmie tweak this...etc"

But she's not rapping here at all...it's just one long ramp over a wanna be Garageband loop.

People bring up Aesop Rock to straw man her horrible off beat flow (who, quiet as kept, had a great LP last year) but that's an insult. I can "rap" as good as this Lauryn.

This song sums up two problem that i see pop on on the lesson periodically

1)Giving passes to artists way past their prime
2)Giving passes to mediocre artistry because it's conscious.

It's one of the few times I am happy it didn't go that way.
Ive seen you post, you don't usually fall into the top categories, I just think you're approaching it the way I like noise bands.

However, just the way I like noise bands, I know WHY people may not like em. Its simply not a case of this being as song.

Proof positive you don't like rapping. You don't even have to like this style of rapping, but to say she's not rapping is on, 'rap it sucks, it's just niggas talking' levels.

Did i give a pass? Nope. I said she's rapping her ass off. Not her best, not a good song but shows promise of her still sculpting her craft. Meanwhile the biggest problem of The Lesson is not being willing to accept artists where they are at (that'll probably haunt me at some point but whatevas lol)

>2)Giving passes to mediocre artistry because it's conscious.

Scroll up and read what I've said. I've said I think she's bat shit crazy. Implied that the actual content of the lyrics can be ignored, and yet there's still a talent being displayed which to an avid rap fan shows promise.

Oh I know why folk don't like this. I just said it. Motherfuckers don't like rapping. Many of them probably never did. But it takes 'unlistenable' shit like this for them to realize it.

and has no sense of rhythm?

Busdriver stays on beat.

Even 'offbeat' rappers ride a rhythm.

This? It's her doing spoken word really fast.

I mean, I can pick up a guitar, play random notes/chords as quickly as I can and would you say this about me:

"I said he's playing his ass off. Not his best, not a good song but shows promise of him still sculpting his craft"

As opposed to me just randomly playing notes as quickly as possible?

if that's the case ive got a legion of white rappers who love that double time flow (and manage to stay on beat!) that you would be interested in.

This is just an accelerated attempt of that stilted-spoken-word-flow she'd fallen into after she'd essentially gave up rapping full-time in the form of her early mostly-sung solo career & then long absence from recording.

and Lauryn's prior rapping, along with Dre's on Day In The Life Of Benjamin Andre & some of his later guest spots, along with some recent Cee-Lo bars were all sorta evidence of my 'rapping is like stand-up comedy' theory explaining the importance of continuing to rap/do-stand-up in order to maintain sharpness/timing or something gets lost in the process when you come back no matter how great you once were.

I'm not trying to take anything away from her, I was a Lauryn Hill fan in her prime (saw her twice with The Fugees & once on Miseducation Tour with Busta opening) and she was incredible.

It's a bit curious that her 'return to rap' comes at a time when she has done real damage to her vocal chords via lifestyle & seems scared to try to make the kind of songs that gained her all that Time Magazine/Grammy praise.

It almost feels safer for her to attempt this kind of dissonant pseudo-rap crap because it just allows her to cloak her in this 'uncompromising' mold when really she's just seemed lost personally & artistically for almost a decade.

>IMO Unplugged was horribad x 2, but I'm not going to say it

>
To me this song (as well as 'Neurotic Society' pre-prison) is sort of a PCP-laced variation of the 'Mystery of Iniquity' type of rapping she did on Unplugged.

It's a style that bears little resemblance to the rhyming she used to do & I happen to find it grating to no end.

Switching flows/cadence/approach up is cool over the course of career: Jay has changed his rhyme style up multiple times from his early 'soundin like the Fu-Schnickins', Cam slowed down then switched his approach to stuffing bars with multis delivered in a slower/too-cool-to-care manner plus even birthing the unfortunate #hashtag rap a few years before twitter even existed.

But the change compared to a Lauryn or Andre is that while the first two felt like a steadily working rapper sorta naturally updating/evolving this stilted-spoken-word bit seems borne more out of necessity because these were MC's who became disconnected from the culture/art-form that originally made them stars.

This style which requires no attention really being paid to meshing with the musical backdrop & no variation or rhythmically interesting bits, Lauryn's current stuff sounds like hyperactive grocery-list-of-ills slam poetry stuff.

That shit doesn't hold a candle to Young L-Boogie faux-giggling on-beat in mid-verse or noting the bomb graffiti on the tomb of Nefertiti.

both of these joints are contractual obligations based on her legal situation. when neurotic dropped wasn't it said she had to release somehting to show intent before going to court, because sony had come to defend her as an international music star. she took that cosign in court, but i really doubt she wants to be putting out music for sony right now. reminds me of divine styler's spiral walls which he supposedly made as a literal fuck you to the label.

She could be a animal torturer. I don't really know much
about her life, don't give a shit

She's a formerly super duper talented person who has fallen
on hard times and doesn't do what she used to do. It happens
often. Not sure why I have to be harder on her for her shitty
music than I am a lot of other artists for theirs.

>I don't feel all that bad.

Me neither.

>And again, the song sucks, regardless of circumstance.

A$AP Rocky puts out shitty songs all the time, the Lesson
doesn't pile on

Y'all ENJOY being extra against artists like Lauryn

She's a formerly uber talented person who is struggling
with life shit and doesn't make music that we like anymore.

Welcome to, like, most talented artists

but the attention we're paying to her terrible music is a testament to how we feel about her talent and her potential for so much better. It'd actually be WORSE if we just ignored her like we do crappy artists like A$AP Rocky, to use your example. The fact that we're complaining about her dropping shitty tunes is a good thing because it speaks to the fact that we're still interested in hearing her stuff when she drops it, good or bad.

It's better to be criticized than ignored, in this business.

You'll find a way to disagree because that's your shtick in this place, so I'll stop here but just had to make sure I was clear.

Like, he comes in here...and is like...

"OK. Well, I agree with the majority. This song sucks. But they *are* the majority, so I have to attack them for something. OH! They are being TOO harsh about her shitty music! And her life is tough enough lately as it is. Boom."

...and then he posts.

Gotta respect it. At least he doesn't come in here and lie to us. He doesn't like the song, but he *also* doesn't like how the other people that don't like it are talking about how much they don't like it.

She's going to continue making what she wants. Get the fuck over it.

Both of these bitches were unfinished contractual obligations that she had to put out but wanted to include a statement based on her situation. They are very effective as that. You can't get over that's what she's doing tough shit for you. But please at thinking you or any of these 'fans' think they can tell Ms. Hill what to do. She love yall but really don't give a fuck what you think.

I for one am thankful for it. Cause lord knows before having to do the bid there was no plans on any new Lauryn Hill music period.

Lauryn has one great album and a good album with the Fugees. Kanye is miles ahead of ms Hill musically and uses his crazy to create awesome music. Lauryn is a what coulda been, oldie but goodie, her career is over. I like her old stuff that's where it ends.

that female chorus gives me a vibe I need in music.

sort of a haunting melody in that chorus........that always gets me. Plus those female voices sound good on the chorus. A rare feeling for music to give me.......been a while.

the shimmering guitar/keyboard all through it is very cool

the bass line and drum beat are refreshing

L has an edge, some life in her voice

In response to Reply # 0

The song is a perfect representation of mind state and her outlook on life at this current time. Thus it is perfect in its imperfection. It pure honest music being released by an artist who knows very well that people want her to lie. Were she to release some glossy song with perfect flow, riding a nice beat, palatable for a wide audience, then she would lying to herself and to that audience.

"Consumerism is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in. We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side. Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place. I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven't been able to watch the news too much recently, so I'm not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn't imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it's level." -Ms. Lauryn Hill

When people truly appreciate an artist, they can see and respect the creativity coming from an artist in their highs and also in their lows. Whether they can get into the song or not, they can at least acknowledge that it is honest and real. I think this song is dope and no I wouldn't slap this in my ride or drop this in a club. I may only play this a few more times and that's it, but I appreciate it for what it is, a hard statement from an artist going through some hard shit.

I kinda wish she would just renounce her name Lauryn Hill, change it to reflect who she is now. Only then will people stop judging her based on who she was over a decade ago.

If you release what is within u, what u release will save you. If you do not release what is within u, what u do not release will destroy u.
