Fucking great. This is a real album first and foremost. Each half definitely stays in its own lane (the first half is a bit more traditional rap while the second is way more abrasive and minimal) but neither feels repetitive at any point. Im going to try and hold off on another listen until it goes up on Spotify but it'll be tough.

>This is a real album first and foremost.

When a review begins by telling us that an album
is a "real album," that's a sign its dogshit

Just letting y'all know

>Each half definitely stays in its own lane (the first half is
>a bit more traditional rap while the second is way more
>abrasive and minimal)

Hipster translation: Album has no coherent vision, no flow,
no rhyme or reason. Its a hot, extra chunky pile of shit

>but neither feels repetitive at any
>point.

Hipster Translation: Danny was lazy and mailed it in
about a dozen different ways, none of which overlap

Im going to try and hold off on another listen until
>it goes up on Spotify but it'll be tough.

LOL -- No, its easy to wait because the album is bad. That's
why you're waiting. You're going to sit on your disappointment,
try to deal with it until tomorrow (after which you'll also
be disappointed, but its Monday, which is supposed to suck)

It's going to be pretty polarizing. Seems the two Danny Browns are even more distinct and separate personas on this record. In XXX you would have a track like Blunt After Blunt that had both druggy and hardcore Danny vibes(although Dope Fiend Rental does toe the line)...nothing like that here..it's either super ultra serious dark hood tales and SUPER DOOPER TURNT UP TRRAAAAAAAP. Someone pointed it earlier how you could tell by the producers, but its a pretty drastic change in sound from side A to B.

Ill say this much tho; I think the trap chasing beats are a little 'too' on point now and while dope, are more more aligned to whats happening in that world then those quirky and left field beats in XXX..it's stuff that you wouldn't be surprised at MMG rapping over and thats a shame. Shouldda went more off the grid.

Funny enough, his songwriting in 'regular' Danny Brown mode has improved(also the beats). The track with Charlie XCX(!?!) while lyrically one of his weaker efforts could pass for one of Lamar's conscious crossovers like A.D.H.D or Swimming Pools. Like someone said above, its the closest and refined version of "old" danny we've seen in a minute.

Danny is calm and uses a vivid pitch-perfect metaphor (pop culture reference), Gremlins, to speak on the spiritual and psychological state of (a) youth in inner cities (Detroit).

Oh No's beat... shiiiieeeeeeet. that fuzzy ass loop (and dusty ass kick drum) sounds deranged and ominous and compliments Danny's content

its a art

It must have the right vision, and be well thought out

Because when its not, his work just spirals into outright
noise

XXX was a damn near masterpiece

I always know Danny's gonna have at least a handful of songs that
I fuck with on his releases, but this might be his first album I can listen
to without skipping anything.

I was pretty worried I'd strongly dislike the 2nd half, but it's really no
different from songs like "I Will" or "Bruiser Brigade" from XXX. He still
makes trap more fun to listen to than most.

The first half is just dope beats and Danny ripping the mic. I maintain
that that's one of my favorite things to hear. SIde A, the joint with GIbbs,
Gremlins (lawd hammercy). He came with it.

I don't even have any major immediate criticisms.

Danny's still taking beats and making good songs out of them even if
the beats themselves aren't particularly noteworthy. This dude is just
a straight up artist, and I appreciate that.

*Thumbs up*

I'm not paying full album prices for 6 songs

The only reason I might buy this is just off GP,
because Danny deserves it based on all the freebies
he been giving us

But on MERIT for THIS ALBUM? No.

and he's the godfather of that sound. His album sounded like it was supposed to. Danny coming with this half and half shit and it didn't work. The beats ain't tight either on the second half. Sounds like knock off trap beats with a dash of techno/dub whatever the kids call it these days. Wasn't working for my ears fam. The project just doesn't sound focused to me. This could easily be a free mixtape. Like I said above, Float On is the only song on the second half I like.

I like high pitched voice Danny better than serious real voice Danny.

Was really hoping for an album all like ODB.

Still need to give a few more listens before I can give a final grade.

just all in out fucking weird...id argue this album is too safe particularly on Side B. Tracks like Lie4 and Die Like a Rockstar were definitely off kilter compared to anything out even now, tracks like Smokin and Drinkin is pretty mainstream trap.

Danny sounds exhausted and exasperated

he tried to cater to the audience he created from Hot Soup to Hybrid AND the audience he made with XXX, when before he just took us where ever the fuck he wanted. and either you rode the wave or got off. no big deal.

i knew when he was dropping ALL THOSE hot ass 16s and 24s in 2012 it was going to run the risk of watering down his material for his own album, and it has.

all the humor is gone. all the eye-brow / WTF punchlines are gone. all the original concepts are gone. in many was he did go "too far" and became a caricature.

he's just rapping for rapping sake. at time its very good at times its what Big Reg said, him sounding like the days-n-times, which was never DB's MO

i like the beats on Side A better, but prefer the energy of his rhymes on side B.

overall i give it a 3, 3.5 outta 5. favorites right now are Gremlins, The Return, Torture, Red To Go and Float On

In that, the first half is excellent, as is the last song, but the rest of the second half is very questionable. I don't mind "the voice" at all, it's just the EDM stuff that I'm not really digging. The fact that XXX wasn't broken up the way this album was worked better sequencing-wise than separating all the headier stuff and the "trap" (ugh) stuff. Don't dislike it, but doesn't work for me as a whole at all.

Off the top...this may not grow on me at all.

Danny Brown went a little too "Tommy Lee of rap" in the last couple of years between the Hybrid and the Pitchfork explosion.

As an underdog, he was fierce/hungry/experimental/funny/inspired

A lot here he sounds like he's trying to gauge his audience & his peers and deliver more of what they seemed to respond too on tour and whatever continues to line-him up with this New School of M.C.'s

and D. Brown is my m.f. man.

I'm a fan of dude but I like shit like '#hottestmc' or other features/freestyles I've heard post-XXX whose titles I'm not even familiar with better than anything I hear on this album.

I mean this album makes Earl's feel like "Good Kid, Mad City" in terms of meeting expectations.

If this 'Oxymoron' album from Q doesn't drop this quarter or disappoints anywhere near as much as this one, the New Guard (or at least a few of my favorite prospects from it) have taken a real hit at the back-end of 2013.

Goddamn, I don't know if I have the patience to try to hear this album full through another time.

I was never the biggest fan of danny brown but this album is dope. XXX was too crazy for me but this is a better mix of the styles he has. The calmer songs make me better able to accept the crazy ones. He may have even be better served my mixing them up more in the sequencing. That stretch of songs on side b got really monotonous to me.

But considering the O_E lead tone of the post, *who as much hate as he gets embodies most of the biases of of the boards*, it's not surprising the post is full of hate...anything that bucks the status quo of traditional boom bap gets extra hated on...JUST LIKE XXX DID ON THESE BOARDS, lol. People are hating on Bruiser Brigade and I Will right in this post! lol.

It makes it difficult in a post like this to separate genuine critique from outright "IM NOT USED TO HIS VOICE, WHAT, NO SOUL SAMPLES?!? THIS SUCKS" OKP traditionalism.

Personally, I give it a 7/10 compared to XXX 9/10. You've got a 9/10 album in there, id cull some tracks on the B side (Smoking/Drinking, handstand) throw in some of the more ratchet A side tracks (Dope Fiend Rental, Red To Go) and end it with Old.

Another board called it his 'It Was Written' and it makes sense to me, a solid followup tainted by forcing in populist fare songs. But glancing at the post, its an utter failure as if he was farting on the mic and passing it as a song.

But elsewhere, the early reviews are pretty positive, here are the first 3 i grabbed below...

an unreleased singles mixtape.
With that being said..... I like his crazy rhyming style on side B.
Yes, the production on side A is better (but not mind-blowing).
Like, do yall remember how you felt the first time you heard "Aderrall Admiral"?
Well, nothing on this album gave me that feeling.
And dammit.... I wanted more weird production like the song "ODB".

Artist: Danny Brown
Album: Old
Label: Fool's Gold; 2013
Rating: 8.7 BEST NEW MUSIC

By Jayson Greene; October 3, 2013

Danny Brown's XXX was a concept album about desperation; "If this shit don't work, nigga, I failed at life!" he wailed on the opening song. Old is a concept album about existential confusion. Danny Brown has not failed at life—he's independently successful, with a fervent fan base both inside and out of rap. Now he's got to sort out how to best continue living. It might not be as dramatic a subject as flaming out, but it's more relatable to most of us, and it's maybe no accident that it resulted in the best and most resonant album of Brown's career.

In preparing critics and fans, Brown went to great lengths to warn us not to expect another XXX—"If people are just looking for dick-sucking jokes, there isn't too many of them," he said back in January. "I listened to Old every day and thought, ‘I need to make this more entertaining," he told Pitchfork later. When I ran into him at SXSW and introduced myself, he gave me a quizzical smile: "I'm challenging ya'll with the next one," he joked, looking slightly uneasy. The irony of Old, of course, is that Danny Brown's version of a sober, measured, mature album still features plenty of lines about snorting crushed pills, throwing up in hotel sinks, and smoking so much kush you feel yourself falling off of the earth. Some things haven't changed.

The album is divided into a "Side A" and a "Side B," an act of aesthetic devotion that signals Danny Brown's unusual investment in the arcana of music fandom. Last year, he famously told a bewildered A$AP Rocky that one of his heroes was Arthur Lee before lecturing him on the merits of Forever Changes. The structure here suggests two LP sides, neatly divided, but one of the best things about Old is how mixed up it is—Brown's past, his present, his deranged side, his reflective side, his party songs and his nightmares. "Problems in my past haunt my future and the present," he moans on "Clean Up". The album is 19 songs, ranging across so much emotional terrain that it almost needs to be tackled in stretches.

Side A contains the heaviest, most harrowing material, but the demons he exorcises there don't stay put. Bad memories pop up everywhere on Old, including the louder, more festival-ready second half. The album's structure pokes at the notion of forward motion: At the end of the first track, an unrelentingly ugly crack-sale reminiscence taking place in an abandoned house in Detroit, A-Trak scratches in a hook from "New Era", a song off of Brown's 2010 release The Hybrid. An incident Brown alluded to on XXX's "Fields"—"mommy gave me food stamps, told me buy some Wonderbread/ On the the way, these niggas jumped me, left with knots in my head"—gets expanded to song-length on "Wonderbread" and then referenced again at the end of the album. The cumulative message is layered: 1) Stop asking for the old Danny Brown, because I've been working double-time trying to escape him, and 2) Stop asking for the old Danny Brown, because he's obviously still here.

There are multiple "old Danny Browns," as well: There's the kid from "Torture", whose mind "ticked off, desensitized to a lot of things" after watching "unk beatin on my auntie" and a fiend "damn near burn his top lip off." There's the crack-dealer, who Brown is similarly eager to dispense with: "This the last time I'mma tell it/ Wanna hear it? Here it go," he says on "Side B," before launching into the details of his old trade. And there's the drug abuser, whom he catalogs unsparingly on "Clean Up", ignoring text messages from his daughter while he gets high in a hotel room.

This is a complicated narrative to keep running but Brown is equal to the task. In his berserk originality, writerly flair, emotional impact, and old-fashioned craft, Danny Brown belongs in any conversation about the best rappers working, and he's at the top of his game here. His rapping is abrasive and visceral, but it's also musical, a quality he doesn't get much credit for because of his vocal tone. Listen to the way he rolls the word sounds "fucked up" and "knuckles" on "Dubstep" off of a perfect little woodpecker-stutter of percussion. Or his subdued performance on "Lonely" featuring a fluid, airy beat by Paul White built from two Morice Benin samples.

The production is richly textured, unlikely, and surprising, solidifying Brown's left-field taste. He bends your ear back rapping over conventionally gritty hip-hop tracks from Oh No and Paul White and tackles a range of things that most rappers would run from, including the Rustie-produced electro-squelch "Way Up Here", a cluttered, frantic beat that feels expressly designed to trip rappers up. Ab-Soul and Brown muscle the octopus-armed thing to the ground. He barks over airhorn-shrill party anthems like "Dip"and "Handstand" and broods conversationally on the Charli XCX-featuring "Float On". Brown has always made a compelling case for being weird, but he's never sounded this realized or confident in his weirdness before.

"Float On", which closes the album, is an "Elevators"-like lope, complete with woodblock knock, that finds Brown clearing away the static and bearing down on the only thing he's certain about: "Nothing else matter except my next rhyme," he murmurs. Remembering a time when he had "music in my heart, but my thoughts wouldn't listen," he prays to get old so that he can "see my influence on this genre of music." It's the humblest and most powerful wish I've heard on a record all year.

Though I do think the grade is a little high.
the album is probably around a 7 in my book, but I think its the kind of project that one should invest the time to digest.

It is easy to miss a lot of his lyricism b/c of his delivery. There are still things I'm catching with every listen (much like XXX years after its release).

i like the album, it's just a very jolting jump from side a to side b that i'm not as much of a fan of..."XXX" was two sided to a lesser extent but made the effort to unify the different sounds he wanted

a friend said this should have been two EPs released on the same day ala Nelly "Sweat" and "Suit", i dig that idea heavily

i like dip and break it. handstand and way up here are okay. the rest is not tolerable to my ears. but even still, the experimentation stands out, and works for me as often as it doesn't. Side A is strong enough to stand with all but the absolute best for me. I turned it into a 14 song burn cd (added ODB).

Off one listen I can say I'll probably always like "The Hybrid" the most, but right now I'm putting "Old" over "XXX" overall.
