"Can one "pay dues" solely by being a fan/listener?"
something ive been considering lately...not sure myself though i lean to "yes" assuming the fan/listener takes understanding & being a student of the art seriously
wondering what you venerated lessonheads think...

he has publicly stated that he had no interest in being a rapper before he started rapping a few years ago. he also mentions being a serious hip hop head from a very young age. one can reasonably assume that he did in fact study the game very seriously for dozens of years before actually venturing out as an artist. he appeared almost out of nowhere as a mostly formed entity and once listeners and critics got past the voice similarities, he was accepted as "authentic", irrespective of his non-performing history or any kind of street cred
*this may not fit with the accepted definition of "to pay dues"
I still think besides being a listener you need to be a part of whatever the culture of that music is. Living it, representing it, etc. For example I love Reggae and have listened to the music for decades but I've never felt like I'm apart of that culture. I'm not Jamaican, or rasta , I don't speak patois and I've never truly lived that lifestyle I'm just a fan. I would hesitate getting in a debate with someone who does live the culture about what real reggae is because as much as I love and appreciate it I still know there is a separation at some point culturally. I probably wouldn't describe it as paying dues because that makes me think of you being an actual artist.

i love it & listen to tons but i dont feel qualified to really have opinions on whatever issues of contention there are in Jazz, i may have what i like & agree w/ certain ideas but i dont feel like i can speak on it w/ any measure of authority
but hip-hop, even though im not an artist, just *feels* like too much a part of me & my life not to speak on my opinions & views of the culture

Snoop Lion is a prime example, just cause you smoke weed and listen to reggae doesn't mean that you can call yourself a reggae artist now but I guess when you popularity and money, some will let you slide with it.

If someone makes their first post here asking for all the unreleased Dilla beats because someone told him how dope "Donuts" is. Would you be so quick to throw him links? Or would you tell him to hit a shop and put in work like some of us did?
