...is that they consciously wanna be the guy that was on top when they were getting started.

It's what I can't stand most about "music" now days...

People are focused on being "the next Michael Jackson" sales wise, or tighter choreography, or most cutting edge special effects in the video, of biggest video budget, or most awards or longest/most memorable acceptance speech, more than WRITING SOME CLASSIC SCHITT.

Ain't none of these motherfuckers got a "Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough" nowhere in they body.

Yet...

example: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/drake-brushes-off-kendricks-control-diss-20130923

To the point of being "the next..." is a topic on ALL of these guys records, their audience buys into it, it turns into a möbius strip of insecure/aspirational douchebot anthems.

Whereas, M.J. and Prince did "inspired" tributes to J.B. & Jackie Wilson & Sly, etc....
these new cats seemingly want to WWF they guy who's poster they have on their wall.

That is so weird to me.

I don't like it. It's all dumb. I hate songs about being "#1" or claiming some title...it's all bullschitt.

With that said....Kanye SO wants to have his Jimi Hendrix/John Lennon/Sly Stone on Dick Cavett moment...and it's already happened ("George Bush doesn't care about Black people"), he waffled that moment on Jay Leno's show when Jay basically badgered him into apologizing and made him feel like his mom would be ashamed.

I think Kanye is fascinating in this regard...he's a fan of pop culture, but he's not really good at being a "celebrity" even with all of his celeb friends and connects...

Dude comes off as "the new, lil' more talented Ray J."

Like...won't nobody tell dude his breff stink cause he all over TMZ.

I'm just rambling though.

EVERYONE wants to be the guy on their poster IMMEDIATELY!
ESPECIALLY in rap -- which by its very nature is competitive and built on the foundation that most mcs have to believe they are better than the next guy (even if the next guy is on their wall).

most people learn the slow/hard way that they have to pay dues to get there.

Isaac Hayes wasn't singing about being the "New Otis Redding" though, let alone Frank Lloyd Wright...nah'mean?

I'm talking about how these guys are SO plugged into their "marketing" & "branding"...this is relatively new, homie.

Yeah...once you reached a certain level cats wanted to get their "Russell Simmons" on, but De La ain't do it. Rakim modeled for a Henny ad...

Kanye is YEARNING to be the voice of his generation...in the most un-Anti-Hero wanna-be Anti-Hero way I've ever seen.

Meanwhile Drake is somewhere flipping through US magazine looking for the next relevant starlet behind Beyonce & Kim Kardashian so he can UP HIS BRAND.

I don't think it's ever been this blatantly douche-y.

Yeah you had mofoz swagger jacking each other over chains and champagnes and schitt...but now fools are just flat out apeing career trajectory/acquisitions/investments etc. all the while singing about it on track 6 of their new album. featuring executive production by Rick Rubin and various shout outs to Jean Michel-Basquiat, Frida Kahlo & the Venus of Wilendorf.

Leno badgered Kanye into apologizing for the Taylor Swift incident, not for the George Bush thing.

Kanye's not new, he's as established as rap acts get in 2013.

He released All Falls Down (his voice of a generation moment) on his first solo album nearly 10 years ago.

I dont think he really 'understands' the pop culture of the past..just as you stated how he flubbedhis John Lennon moment on Leno

I like how he tries to be Mr Pop Culture with what he does and how he presents material but like you said..he really doesnt get it..ot its not really 'authenmtic'

I think he gets the celebrity thing but he doesnt get anything else at heart

grabbed it off another site

- Yeezus allowed him to make what he wanted once again that didn't have to go with "the textures of the time," referencing Cruel Summer's trap influence
- Cruel Summer won't stand out in 100 years like Yeezus or 808s because of how deviant it was format-wise and sonically at the time that forced people to love or hate it
- MBDTF can be considered to be perfect, but he's not here for that, but to crack new ground sonically and culturally
- Original version of On Sight was 14 minutes long of experimenting with a synthesizer with Daft Punk during a session
- Blood on the Leaves was supposed to be the intro to Yeezus, but though Kanye knew it would have probably psychologically made naysayers perception of the album better, but he wanted the aggression and the compression of his voice to "jump out, and affect you, either in a good or bad away"
- Not here to make easily programmable music
- Kanye's production style of taking different elements and styles together and clashing them together came from how he was consuming information at the moment, positive and negative emotions towards him
- On Yeezus "This is what frustration sounds like"
- Sounds like he's cool with Quincy Jones again
- Talks a lot about how MJ is da bess and the one who influenced everything
- Kanye feels he has reached the glass ceiling in music
- Talks about the styles people and organizations doubted him for over the years, tight jeans, leather jogging pants, etc.
- Talks about reading negative comments on Hypebeast about him
- RAP THE NEW ROCK AND ROLL. WE THE CULTURE. ITS BEEN LIKE THAT FOR A MINUTE MR ZANE
- Talks about how "rap n***a" has become the new insult in hip-hop, which used to be "R&B n***a" (this is real talk)
- Reason why Kanye hasn't been able to reach out to other creative realms is because everyone he has wanted to partner with has told him they want to control him creatively
- Talks black people: "We can have our perspective on T-Shirts, but anything more and your Truman Show boat is hitting the wall"
- Never really liked Gold Digger, but he did it because he knew he was going to get paid lol
- Talks getting snubbed by NYT when he talked about the next evolution of theatre, and then they go and talk to George Lucas and Spielberg who then say the same
- "I like some of the GaGa songs, what the fuck does she know about cameras"
- Talks self-hate, classism and "When someone says something like "I Am A God," everyone says, who does he think he is? I JUST TOLD YOU WHO I AM. A GOD. I JUST TOLD YOU. Would it have been better if I made a song called I Am A Gangsta? I Am A Pimp? All those colours and patinas fit better on someone like me, right?"
- Talks accusations of megalomaniac, self-oriented motivations, argues to the contrary
- Talks his dad living with the homeless 7 years ago, still living in the slums in DR helping with poverty etc. today
- Zane and Kanye go back and forth about whether the radio truly supports Ye or not today
- Kanye talks music industry being hit like an iceberg by the internet very briefly
- Jay didn't want dancers on WTT tour
- "I've spent 80% of my last 10 years working on this, and 20% working on music."
- Talks how Yeezys changed his life
- "YOU HEAR IT. WE LOVE VERSACE. VERSACE VERSACE VERSACE VERSACE VERSACE VERSACE VERSACE VERSACE." *dead* I can't wait for the KTT remix of this
- "You telling me people don't look at Kanye West like the glitch ?!"
- Talks people hating HAM making him go make Otis

Time will tell which one is true.

And with the Apple and design talk all the shit he talks about it all.... I feel like he CAN actually do it because its the same thing that happened with his rapping. He wasn't that good at first and just willed himself there.

but maybe he's just bugging out...

we all know somebody who's pretty talented and wildly outspoken to the point of being annoying and obnoxious. These types are ALWAYS saying "you'll see, just wait, I'll get on" then they go nowhere. But he's the ONE guy like that who actually got through. That's the way I've always viewed him. He just likes trying things and doing as many things as he can and he spares no opportunity to remind you how inspired he is.

after reading some of the comments on this post, i wonder if i just listened to the same interview because some of your comments are irrelevant. i might not really be a big Kanye fan when it comes to music but i understand and respect what he stands for.

Kanye is the new Basquiat! and he his not going to wait till he dies before people respect his art, he wants you to respect and appreciate it while he is still here to rip the rewards. Basquiat had to die for the art world to appreciate/accept his work!

Kanye is fighting the same fight most black males fight daily but just on larger scale and more publicly, what he's doing right now is for future black designers and not for himself so when you see him ranting and raving its out of frustration!

nobody is perfect, not even you judging mr west!!
everybody has made mistakes but if you can see pass Kanye's mistakes(experiences) you will see that he's just a man that loves to create, very passionate creator!!

Kanye is God!! so fuck ya'll

>i might not really be a big Kanye fan
>when it comes to music but i understand and respect what he

what does Kanye stand for..."Kanye?"

>Kanye is the new Basquiat! and he his not going to wait till
>he dies before people respect his art, he wants you to respect
>and appreciate it while he is still here to rip the rewards.
>Basquiat had to die for the art world to appreciate/accept his
>work!

Kanye has what 15-20 Grammy's...a gold grill on the bottom of his reset jaw.
I think Kanye knows he's appreciated/respected.

Then there is his ego.

I don't need Kanye designing anything "better" or "worse" for that matter.

>Kanye is fighting the same fight most black males fight daily
>but just on larger scale and more publicly, what he's doing
>right now is for future black designers and not for himself so
>when you see him ranting and raving its out of frustration!

A lot of brothers wanna make better water bottles and basketball jersey's...yes.
But thank god we don't have to sit through their ego-centered "Wanna-Be Steve Jobs" cosmic rants.

Kanye can continue to put up his own money to sell you 200$ t-shirts, that's between you and him.

Kanye can put up a kickstarter just like Spike Lee.

Why is Kanye so bitchy?
Because that's the Kanye people respond to the most.

You've got this way twisted.

>nobody is perfect, not even you judging mr west!!
>everybody has made mistakes but if you can see pass Kanye's
>mistakes(experiences) you will see that he's just a man that
>loves to create, very passionate creator!!
>
>Kanye is God!! so fuck ya'll

Are you done now?

Did you get all those tears out of your system?
Maybe even fit in a lil' nap and a juicebox when you woke up.

Answer me this
Who's Kanye's enemy?

All of this existential navel gazing was waaaay more interesting when John Lennon did it in the 70's.

Kanye prolly knows his music is a little bit more disposable than the folks that came before him.

He sees that Steve Jobs is the real rockstar of the 21st century.

Kanye would cry about making the BEST CHOCOLATES if Willie Wonka was the Steve Jobs of 2014.

(i thought it was until the very end lol)... but i'm not 11 years old and i'm on board with 80% of what Kanye had to say in that interview... do i think he showed up w/ an agenda instead of worrying about the actual "interview" aspect of things? sure. i think he did that because he'd rather not interview at all, but when he has something to say and REALLY wants to get it out, he can wake up in the morning and say "I'm Kanye West, i DO have an outlet for letting out my (valid) frustrations and i'm going to take advantage"... nothing wrong w/ that, imo... esp. if you're passionate about the shit you want to be doing...

now, in terms of what dude was saying, i honestly think he believes in everything he said, i don't for a second doubt his extremely broad ambition.. because i work in or around certain circles he's talking about, i know for a fact that his frustrations are completely valid.. "he's a producer/rapper and the slash has never really been respected before, so for now, stick to what we know you can do and leave *this* level of art or creation to the grown-ups".. i KNOW that's what he's dealing with because i've seen it.. and while i'm sure he understands where his celebrity comes from and where corporations or fashion houses, etc. see the value of that celebrity as - marketing materials - i think that if he believes in himself that much to be able to conquer different elements of aesthetic life, he should be afforded that right (as should anyone who isn't comfortable in a particular box)... i think this rings especially true with younger black males and also w/ the "hip hop" label..

Listening to that interview, i can guarantee he's not just fighting for his own right to do that but is also trying to pave the way for young black professionals who desperately want to be taken seriously for who they are and not for the mold that they have to fit... there's a respect level that has to be honored for certain ideas to be accepted and realized.. unfortunately, that respect isn't given evenly across the board.. and i believe him when he says there's a new glass ceiling that must be broken through..

now, yes, i am a fan of dude's music, but i'm looking at what he's saying with a clear head because if you can get past the crazy faces and tones and previous reputation, ye is making a serious point. i think it's going to get lost in the antics and his volume level... but as someone who personally relates to his message here, there's a lot of truth in what he's saying as well as valid frustration.. it's just unfortunate that there's so much credibility damage already done that most ppl aren't going to listen to the sentiment that he's putting out there..

and no, i'm not saying that i want Kanye West to design my next house or outfit... i'm taking it on a broader level..

Kanye can brat out and move on if nobody bites on his clothing line, jalepeno poppers, Kanye West's George Foreman Grill, etc.

That's what Kanye is selling here and ALWAYS.

He's saying, "IF YOU JUST LET ME....I'LL FINALLY BE HAPPY."

He's not saying, "IF YOU JUST LET ME...YOU'LL SEE YOU'RE MISGUIDED ABOUT MY WHOLE TRIBE."

I don't know where you guys are getting this schitt.

50. "maybe it's because i'm projecting his sentiment onto the way *i*"
In response to Reply # 48

think about things and what i, personally, want to accomplish (not in the fashion world), i see it differently than you... sometimes you gotta separate the words/reality from the person saying them... this interview in a vacuum says something more than "IF YOU JUST LET ME....I'LL FINALLY BE HAPPY" (and for the record, i don't know where you're getting that shit either, so we're even)...

and maybe i misspoke when i said *he* was personally trying to pave the way for others... i have zero clue about what he's thinking or what his motivations are (same with you).. but having certain ideas *out* there is worth something... and like i said, it's unfortunate that people can't address the ideas w/o addressing the person (which i think is kind of clear in your responses)...

like i said, i like dude's music and i'm a fan of the "character" he plays on tv/record, but i could give a shit about what he actually does outside of music.. i'm not one of these "omg, kanye is a genius, everything he touches turns to gold, i bet if you just gave him a chance, he'd go down as one of the best fashion designers and architects the world has ever seen! come on LVMH, recognize kanye's genius!!" type people... i'm not infatuated w/ the dude by any stretch - other than the fact that it seems a lot of what he finds dope musically, i do too... but i do think what he's talking about is worth mentioning... i do think that creative minds can be put to use in a bunch of different ways, not just in what they're trained for technically (especially with the right collaborations)... and in 2013 there are more possibilities than ever before.. but convincing people to invest in you for anything other than what your "specialty" is is usually gonna get the side eye, but that mistrust of young black talent is just more prevalent..

i think it also speaks to how seriously popular music is taken as an art form... because there are definitely hierarchies - science ---> the arts... then visual arts/theatre ---> music.. then classical ---> popular music... then rock ---> hip hop... i'm of the opinion that every discipline that dates wayyyyyyyy back is as important as any other... and because they all (including music) are staples in humanity, then why *can't* you get some perspectives from an unrelated source?

i dunno, i'm rambling now, but i dig what he's saying and majority of your responses seem to have more to do w/ who's speaking than what's being said... and i'm not really sure if there are too many other ppl out there shouting this kind of shit from the mountain tops.. so for now, i think it's a good mssg for him to put out there and as with anything, you hope someone has a perspective where they can take something positive or motivating out of this interview..

super contortionist plea coppage, maaaaaan.

Seriously.

I'm sorry Kanye is your "Entrance Ramp" into social justice and equality...
maybe you should stop trying to dismiss what I'm saying and take the message and the messenger (Kanye) at face value.

This nigga is mad they (Fashion Inc.) schitt on his fashion ideas.

This the same m.f. that show up at Cannes with music videos.

This the same m.f. that traded in his Amber Rose for a Kim Kardashian.

This the same m.f. that marches on stage at Award Shows™ fulfilling his "Tupac"® duties as a generational maverick.

I give dude an "A" for easing the most "Cosby"-esque Hip Hop/Rap music back into the limelight...6-7 years ago (since Puffy was Jay-Z), but this nigga has been a car crash since that Taylor Swift schitt.

It's too calculated and too Hollywood now. (Go watch some Hendrix or John Lennon on Dick Cavett...Kanye has)

You're justifying b.s. and so is dude. I'm sorry you can't see it. Don't be mad at me.

Stop it. Play your damn role.
Maybe you won't find your head banging that "glass ceiling" so much.
Trying to force any door open and you will find out how much force is on the other side trying to keep that m.f. closed.

Like I said...you and Kanye can cut the "humble" & the "earnest" now.
Pick a battle in your lane perhaps.

?uestlove (as much as I give him some serious constructive criticism...being a long-time fan) is more of an excellent example of a revolutionary figure for Hip Hop.

He (?uestlove) has truly infiltrated pop culture and forced it to come to his table and talk about what he wants to talk about.

Kanye? He mad. Donda ain't here to make his hot chocolate and grease his scalp...so he gon' make errybody pay for it.

It's exemplifies everything I don't like about the entitlement attached to the "You Don't Know Me" generation.

40. "lofl. you literally know nothing about Basquiat"
In response to Reply # 30

Like most popular urban niggas who have co-opted his image and story

Basquiat was a middle class Black boy who played poor to get his foot in the predominately white down town art scene. He BLEW UP BIG TIME IN HIS DAY. selling pieces for a mil a pop during the early 80s art boom that coincided with the rise of Reaganomics. He was grouped in with graf artist early, though outside of Herring and Fab 5 Freddy they ain't really fuck with him. So he went deeper into the "established art scene".

Basquiat sat at the table and rubbed elbows right next to Warhol, Koons, and Julian Schanbel. His addiction to women and drugs only increased as his fame did. Most sensible people have read his death as directly related to the art world being one of the last bastion of undetered whiteness. In many ways Basquiat was used to add color to the art world's white male canon. His success and death was as much about his own demons as it was about the insidiousness of American cultural institutions.

Basquiat wasn't no Van Gogh struggling to get a rep, he got it in his short days on earth and than hipster Black kids and pompous celebrities said Basquiat's so cool (which he kinda really is) and now we see little crowns everywhere and niggas like swizz beats tweeting "so Basquiat"... it's ass backwards.

But imma let you cook

Can we pinpoint it to a certain event/song/relationship? Because this isn't the same guy I saw interviewed 5 years ago I don't think.

just before getting with Kim or around that time I saw the paradigm shift. I'm digging the passion and the line he had about what Kim did for him, "she was in a powerful enough situation where she could love me without asking me for money." To me, that seems like a shot at previous romantic situations he was in...

Your super duper huge into fashion and can identify the clothing lines made by all the people he name dropped

You feel his pain about being unable to get his foot in the fashion door and having it be directly related to race (even tho he has his foot in fashions door)

You know because you're a fan of his you're a fan of your self, right!

You believe the internet is like flying cars in "future movies" and its only in its nascent state though its been around near 20yrs and tech brains like Jaron Lanier believe web 2.0 to be a huge failure.

You fuks with all this huh

And what he's saying about being told you can't do something by everyone and proving them wrong. I dig it.

The fashion stuff isn't really my lane but I'm not mad at it either.

Do you, just keeping you informed

>Your super duper huge into fashion and can identify the
>clothing lines made by all the people he name dropped

He wasn't actually namedropping for the sake of it

He's actually had discussions with these people

Namedropping is what you did below re: web 2.0

>You feel his pain about being unable to get his foot in the
>fashion door and having it be directly related to race (even
>tho he has his foot in fashions door)

This point about fashion is well known to everyone in the
industry, and Kanye's influence on fashion isn't really
debatable

>You know because you're a fan of his you're a fan of your
>self, right!

This is kinda the basics of hero worship, idiot
He just spun it a different way

>You believe the internet is like flying cars in "future
>movies" and its only in its nascent state though its been
>around near 20yrs and tech brains like Jaron Lanier believe
>web 2.0 to be a huge failure.

Talk about name dropping

You sound like an idiot

And similar analogies were made by lots of people

And "tech brains" are right and wrong about a lot of stuff

>You fuks with all this huh

then actually name dropped (in pathetic fashion) within one post
